Ahhh, very nice. What I needed was some inspiration, I was at a stand still with this guy. I just couldn't picture it in my head. Those ideas look great. Will post back later in the day. Thanks!

OK. Fair question.

I'm picturing him in his late teens (16-18)
Kinda shy, goodie goodie type.
He's also no stranger to adventures,hence the walking stick (cause he's going to be walking for hours).
He's known to take on adventures often and the townsfolk count on him to deal with that stuff. In all honesty I keep picturing a Cloud or Squall character from FF. Allthough I don't want that at all... I guess too much FF burned them into my brain.
Need any more info?

Nothing is on my face!

That's why i'm posting here. I've got my main character basically completed aside from his most important feature... his face. The style, size, and shape are exactly what i've been aiming for, but i'm stumped on a face for him. While your here, what do you think of the walking stick? I think it will make an interesting addition to the walk cycle, but my wife says it looks "gay".... hrmmm  :-\

Any quick edits, ideas, or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Nice to hear some intelligent conversation on this topic. In all honesty I was joking about the whole deal! I can see both sides of the story, and agree with neither of them. My life is too short ( I've got a arthritis in my ear lobes, the doc said i've only got 6 weeks) to be spending time on changing the world. Maybe i'll start with my t-shirt.... I just took a whiff and it reaks.

:P

Laters co-ordinate haterz  ;)

Looks pretty good. Seeing him walk makes me think he should have a mustache, not really the full beard like your first few posts. Just a mustache. I think that'll give him a Magnum PI look... He was cool :)

Ummm very convincing arguements. But take this into account.

I design your roads, sewers, waterlines, fiber optics, TV, cable, and pretty much everything else essential to our way of life. Why couldn't the whole world revolve around me for a change, and not "ROGER". I almost feel like I have a split personality. The AGS and CAD struggling to keep the matrix of x,y from disintegrating in front of my eyes.

I'm sorry if this sounds over dramatic. But like I said from the beginning, this is only for fun and completely meaningless and shit it's time to go to bed. Gunight!

Mark,

Head over to this thread for some help on creating a custom text window. It sounds to me like this is what your looking for. I'm just beginning with AGS and I found it pretty easy to understand. If you need any help i'm sure myself or TK could help you out. I made my text window transparent just like your describing and it came out fine. I also incorporated Darth's idea of 2 GUI's with great results. Have fun.

General Discussion / x and y

Dont know where else to put this... as it's just a general rant.

I'm a CAD Designer, and frankly I can't stand the co-ordinate system in AGS. Its backwards from the norm for me. Shouldn't the 0,0 point be in the lower left-hand corner. Y values should go up the screen! X is another subject alltogether. Hmmm I don't expect to get any sympathy for this meaningless post, but this is my beef for the day! Any thoughts on this or am I alone.  ???

That works much better, I kinda figure out a way on my own last night and used waitmousekey (Think that's the right one) and that worked pretty good. Consider this one done and dusted. Thanks for your help.

TK, Great it works now. Looks good and is exactly what I was looking for except is there a way to make the GUI display continuously. At the moment it only displays while the mouse button is depressed. Thanks again for the help, it's greatly appreciated. I'm still learning the ins and outs of scripting so your little lesson has helped me with some other things.

TK, I tried your code and I couldn't get it to work. I altered it to this.

function DisplayBox(string text) {
SetLabelText(TXTWINDOW,0,text);
GUIOn(TXTWINDOW);
while (IsButtonDown(LEFT)) Wait(1);
GUIOff(TXTWINDOW);
SetLabelText(TXTWINDOW,0,"");
}

It seemed to work fine, but it displayed the label text i.e. "New Label". Was I supposed to put @DisplayBox@ in the label? Also as soon as I tried it by clicking on a hotspot the game crashed... not sure what the error was. Got anymore suggestions, or did I miss something. Thanks for your time.

[Edit: The error said that the "GUI was set as a text window but is not actually a text window GUI"]

Just wondering.... I've created a GUI to replace the text window. Only problem is the GUI doesn't have a x y position like the other GUI's have. I dont want the window to float around depending on where you click. I always want the text to be in a GUI placed at the bottom of the screen. Am I overlooking something, or is this a default setting that I need to deal with?
Thanks,

Thanks for the comments, after looking at the posted image I can definitely see what you mean. It looks a thousand times better on my computer cause you can see more detail so I tried uploading a higher resolution file, but that still looks real grainy.The horizon is a straight line, and appears that way in a test of the game.So I think i'm OK with that. The sun may be off by a pixel or two. Thanks for spotting that! I agree with the sunset colors, and will work on that in the morning. Will post back again when i've done some improvements.

My first screen. I think it may need something. I feel its a little plain. Nothing interesting going on so I would like some comments. Sorry for the low res. In all honesty I didn't feel like uploading the full 1.5MB original.

Right on! I figured it was do-able. Just making sure, as I'm drawing the BG at work then taking them home where AGS is. Will post back if I got any more questions. Thanks for your help.

Beginners' Technical Questions / World Map?
Tue 20/01/2004 19:40:06
I've just joined the Forums after lurking for a month or so. I've finally found a topic that wasn't dealt with in too much depth. I'm thinking of creating a world map which has various town and points of interest, similar to an RPG. I was then thinking of having the towns and such regular size.I've started my game with a 640X480 resolution, but I was thinking of making the world map bigger by 4 to 6 times so it will scroll . Will this work? If not I may just trash the idea. Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
