Hi. I'm hoping to conduct a small survey for a project i am working on. If you're interested in helping out all you need to do is list your top 3 favorite commercial adventure games in order of preference.

For example mine would be:

1. The Curse of Money Island
2. The Longest Journey
3. Grim Fandango

Also if you have the time, a comment about why these are your favorites would be great.

Thanks in advance!

BlackDragon1200: That icon-bar turning off bug, is a known issue which occurs when you leave Aziza's house in the alleys. You can work around it by pressing F7 to turn on the Restore GUI and then press Escape (or click the Cancel button) to turn it off again. That will fix things and you will only need to do it once.
I believe it also once happened outside of WIT.

Really enjoying it so far (i'm about half way through Shapier) but i have found a bug. I'm running the game with 640x400 resolution in a window and sometimes while i am wondering the streets the GUI disappears. I did manage to find a way to get it back though by hitting F5 and then cancel a few times.

And as for combat i am really enjoying the level of strategy involved. If i were to suggest a flaw with it though it would be that it takes a while to gain the level of skill necessary to to roam the desert (I am playing a standard Magic User and had to practice 5 times a day for 8 days [In game] before my skill levels were high enough to fight a Briggand). While i don't have a problem with this (It fits with the original game perfectly) i fear that many people might not have the patience to spend 3 hours training before they can go out and fight.

Or as a closer comparison;

Just downloaded it and it looks good. The only problem is that i'm using a laptop which means that i don't have a NumPad. Would it be possible to have a secondary setting for combat for people without a NumPad or will my only option be to manually redefine all the keys?

Really fun game, but as someone who is colour blind (even if only minorly) i have to say that for me the chemical puzzles were much harder then they should have been. Maybe something to keep in mind for next time.

But besides that, great game.

PoE was rated during the first days of work on the new database beginning, when adding comments wasn't a priority.

Notes about the ratings on a number of games were kept, however, so more comments may be added to already rated games in the future.

Good to hear.

QuoteIf you look at the user comments, you'll see a number of issues people had with the game, which may not be accurately reflected in the rating.

While there are definatly negative parts to many comments, most also paint the game in a positive light (Plus the games thread was largely positive). The general vibe i get for this games seems to me to be "flawed but i enjoyed it non the less". I'm interested to see what the panel thought.

While skimming through the new ratings i noticed that 'Principles of Evil I' was given only 2 cups. This surprised me as it seemed to be a very well recieved game but of course these ratings are subjective so obviously it didn't have the same appeal to whoever rated the game.

What surprised me more though was that such a highly rated game was given such a low rating without a comment from the panel being included. I would be really interested to know why the person who rated this game felt it deserved such a low rating and therefore would like to request a comment be added to the game from the panel.

[EDIT]Actually it would be really great to get comments on any game with a large difference between it's cup and user rating, just so we can see why the reviewers opinion was so different from the communities.

Quote from: Gilbot V7000a on Fri 20/06/2008 07:27:49Moreover, I think a 10 step scale is probably too complicated, as we can't tell how difference a 3.5 is from a 3 or a 4, but if we do it simple to have only full cups, the difference between a 3 and a 4 is more clear-cut.

It doesn't have to be that complicated, simply keep the current guidelines but break each number into an upper and lower tier. So take all the games which recieved a 3 (A decent game, give it a go), the ones that really stand out in that catagory get a 3.5 and the rest get a 3.0. In this way it is not that much harder to rate as you are still using the base 5 catagories but we can now see which 3s were close to being 4s and which 3s were just 3s.

A really simple request (which if implemented would probably actually equate to a lot of work), why not also have half cups for the AGS panel ratings? It just seems to me that the quality of the 3 cup games varies wildly, with 10 steps instead of 5 you could easily fine tune these ratings rather then having to dump all the "average" games into a single catagory.

Also as well as having the ability to search by AGS panel ratings, would it be possible to also have the option of instead searching by user ratings?

Thanks.

Well, I could play this game, but your screenshot is not interesting, so I will pass this time.  Please focus on working to make better graphics.  Better graphics- more chance of being played.

Good graphics should only ever come third to an interesting plot and balanced puzzles.

Blackdragon, you're being a smartass. This game makes you expect it to be a short funny little game, I expected to finish it in 30 minutes max and that's why I felt no need to save. It's easy to say these things afterwards, but guess what I don't need you know to tell me about saves, I already know it.

Sorry, didn't mean to be. I'm low level OCD so i tend to save a lot no matter what i'm playing. And on more than a few occasions i have been glad i did. You never know when a game will crash on you.

Quote from: Nostradamus on Thu 15/02/2007 19:54:05How should I have known I should save games?Ã,  At least in old school Sierra games you know you could die and hence saved once in a while. Here there was no way of knowing before it was too late.

I guess there's a lession there, save often no matter what you are playing. This isn't just because of random deaths, what if the game had crashed or the power had gone out? There have been many times in games which you cannot die that i have been glad i had those half a dozen save files backing me up.

By the way; were the musics are in .mid format? I couldn't hear any music in the game, and my PC doesn't play midis for a long time. I would be really sad if I had finished the game without any music :(

From the readme file: On some computers the Windows WAV sound volume may be automatically turned down when the game is started, making sounds but not music inaudible (you will notice because the movement of the cursor on the title screen is supposed to make boop boop noises). To rectify this, alt-tab out of the game and manually change the Windows volume control to a comfortable level.

Does anyone else expect the next game to be set after 7DaS considering that at the end of 7DaS we see the destruction of John DeFoe's Mind Body & Soul which is meant to fulfill the prophecy?

Bug Report:

When i entered the screen for the Sea-Side Town from the left i got stuck on the tree on the left side of the screen and couldn't move.

Spoiler
When i tried to get a tuft of hair from the cat in front of Manannons room, clicking on the cat got no response (or is this intended?).

Spoiler
In Manannons room after you get the key there is still a glint on top of the closet.

When i use the magic map to go to the tree i get stuck and can't move.

On the screen just north of the spiderweb cave you cannot use your magic map (there have been other places this has happened as well).

When i entered the screen with the small pine tree near the bears cottage i got stuck on the pile of rocks in the NE corner and couldn't move.

That is all i've found so far, otherwise good job (I've been wanting to replay KQ3 for years! :))

Good game, not quite your best (BJ3 still wins in that department) but a good game none the less.

Now for some of my grievances. One of the big problems I have had with the Ben Jordan series has been the puzzles. While I agree that it is always good for a game to be able to be finished without a walkthrough or excessive “trying everything on everything” you must also make sure it doesn't just become an interactive story. I have never needed a walkthrough with any of the Ben Jordan games but at the same time I have never been stuck either. This I find as a problem as none of the Ben Jordan games have ever presented me with a challenge and the only thing that has kept me playing has been the wonderful story lines. This hasn't been a huge problem thus far but after playing BJ4 I have started to get a little worried as I have to say that puzzle wise it was one of the easiest adventure games I have ever played. This is by no means meant to be a slight against you in any way but simply constructive criticism on what has the potential to be an awesome adventure series. I play adventure games for both the storyline and the puzzle solving challenge and it pains me to find such a great series lacking so greatly in one of these departments while shining so bright in the other.
Spoiler
(though I also would have really loved to have found a little more history on where the horror came from and why he/she hated the bell)
