Correction about the final puzzle.

Spoiler
When Trilby is lying on the stump, move once. Just type "move". It makes his wound worse. Then all you have to do is wait, pressing Enter when messages pop up. The "keeping me alive" message is purely based on time since the wound got worse, and is not affected by any other commands.

I'm surprised so many people thought the lockpicking puzzle was difficult. I sailed through that like a breeze. I never considered looking for clues for the safe; I just played the puzzle (with the stethoscope). Well, first I blew it up because I couldn't figure it out, but then I replayed and cracked it.

Very nice game, anyway!

If you really want to base your game on someone else's story, the safest route is to contact the author and ask for permission. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that, depending on the author. If they refuse, at least you'll know to spend your time and effort on a different idea.

If you look closely at the door, there are faint yellow, brown and blue marks where the sun, tree and water keys should go. The rock is right below the tree. My brain had all but melted when I finally figured that out.

You're supposed to "catch up on work" until you're needed. Have you tried using your desk?

Clicking on the mouse should bring up your inventory, but you don't have any yet, so it's empty. There's one other thing you can click, which the mouse can reach from inside the cage.
