You can reduce the dpi from 300 all the way to 72 without noticably changing the quality of the graphics displayed in the game.  300 is the standard for good quality prints and 72 is often used for web graphics and other things that are not printed because a low dpi only makes a big difference in prints, not in how a computer displays the graphics.....    keep the high quality backups though in case you need to zoom in on something or make prints.  I would keep it at 800 * 600 though anything less then that starts to look a little to old-school for me.

General Discussion / Re: TMNT
Tue 27/03/2007 22:50:25
It seems strange to compare TMNT with Spongebob because one was made for older children and the other was made for younger children.  Most modern American cartoons seem to focus on a younger age group then the cartoons of the 80s.  There are still some american cartoons that are made for older children, like avatar and invader zim but they became the minority.

It seems like the american animation industry has divided into two catagories, early childhood and adults and that leaves the older children with mostly japanese shows like naruto or dragonballz.  This might be partly because it is easier to decide what content is appropriate when there is only two simple catagories with no gray area inbetween, and also because shows like naruto are more difficult and expensive to make.

Anyways I think it would be more fair to compare TMNT with something like avatar, because spongebob is not even for the same market.

Sanitarium has not been mentioned yet.  I remember playing it sometime around 99 or 00 and thinking it was cool.  Didnt complete it though because the friend I borrowed it from asked for it back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanitarium_%28videogame%29

Also wanted to agree with the person who said Sam & Max!  Funniest adventure game ever.     My favorite of the serria Quest games is the heros quest series, but it has some rpg elements thrown in the mix so its not pure adventure.

Each of Cohen's characters serve a slightly different purpose, exploiting a different aspect of American ignorance. The humor is bringing people out of their comfort zone, and getting them to react.

Ali G. - gangsta-phobia
Borat - xenophobia
Bruno - homophobia

On topic, Predator is an AWESOME, but bad movie. I cannot stress the first adjective enough. :)

So American ignorance is the reason for "gangsta-phobia"?

I always thought that it was the high amount of gang related violent crime that caused gangsta-phobia.

Looks good!  ;D  The only thing that I think looks a little strange is the sofa in the second picture.  It is elevated off the ground and the light source seems to be above it, but it casts no shadow at all.  Looks great though, I would definatly play a game that looks like this.

they won't even get into a local heavy metal bar because they don't dress creditably enough.

wait a second, since when do people have to dress a certain way to get into a heavy metal bar?  I have never been to a metal or punk bar that had a strict dress code.

videodrome was the most memorable Cronenberg movie for me.

I mean, even if you shoot a kid once even to their legs/stomach, don't they fall and pass over?
what i have heard from police officers and soldiers leads me to believe that people always passing out instantly after being shot is a hollywood myth.Ã,

Japanese society/culture/state of mind could be the defining factor into it creators ability to tap into these feelings/fears/insecurities on a cinematic level.

I think it has less to do with the culture and state of mind enhancing art and more to do with what the film industry in different countries think will sell to the general public.Ã,  American movie companies seem more interested in pushing a consistent product that sells in a predictable amount, So they are less likly to take chances with unique movies or something that might be considered politically incorrect.

LimpingFish, have you seen death trance? It is a really fun movie with Tak Sakaguchi and yuji shimomura from versus. Ã, Oh, and are you recommending both tetsuo movies? Ã, I still refuse to admit that there is more then one. Ã, that is how bad I think the second one was. Ã, great list though, it reads a lot like one of the shelves of my video collection.

I have watched the movie and read some of the manga, still have not found time for the novel.Ã,  Its my second favorite japanese movie, after Tetsuo: The Iron Man which will probably always be my favorite because its such a freaky little cyberpunk nightmare that reminds me of a cross between cronenberg and lynch with way to much caffiene.Ã,

If you varied the thickness of the lines in your inking it would give your inked work a more natural flow and increase the visual interest level.  Use your original pencil sketch as a guide, i noticed more variation in line thickness on the original sketch.

The style reminds me of bleach a little bit so I think your doing good.  :)

General Discussion / Bloom (shader effect)
Sat 24/02/2007 21:38:35
I found a easy way to use the bloom shader effect in my prerenderd 3D backgrounds for an adventure game.  I it looks kinda cool, but it is starting to be a little over-used in the gaming industry, so I was wondering what you people think of it, is it going to continue being a cool effect or is it going to be a fad that is as laughable as the photoshop lens flair in a couple years?  If you don't know what effect im talking about click here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloom_%28shader_effect%29

It looks like his pants are pulled up far to high like bernard from day of the tentacle.  Because he is a rebel character and not a sylized cartoon nerd I don't think it is working very well for him,  so I would recomend looking at photo references and changing the ratio between upper body and lower body.  Oh, and one ear sticks out a lot further than the other ear.

Other than that its a good start, I hope you post the colored version of it.

I don't have a tablet,  almost anything that can be done with a tablet can be done with a mouse (it will just take a couple minutes longer)  :)  mashpotato is correct, low opacity is very important.  Soft brushes also help a lot for shading.  So the two best tips I can think of would be to use low opacity and soft brushes for color blending.  Layers and selections can be used to help keep things clean.  What graphics program do you use?
