Long time no speak!

I don't know if any of you remember me but I once frequented these forums a good few years back now. I just thought some of you may be interested in this project and I wondered if any of you fancied helping me out :)

I was developing "Calm Waters" with AGS but eventually decided to use Unity and Adventure Creator as it has a lot of features that I required.

I run Tayanna Studios - a one-man company dedicated to making addictive adventure games with rich storytelling.

Calm Waters is a 2.5D point & click mystery thriller adventure game now out on Windows, Mac and Linux and can be purchased from Steam here:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/541350/Calm_Waters/

It was a project that took over 6 years of my life.

Here's some screenshots:

Story:

Tourists disappearing and blood-curdling screams from a mysterious island out to sea...What secrets does this holiday paradise hold? Perhaps it's time to find out...

Peter Taylor's wife is dead.

One day he decided to take a vacation abroad. He arrives at a small, quiet coastal town where tourists are sparse and everybody knows each other. It's only when he notices people are going missing and all the signs point to a dark, mysterious island out to sea that he decides to team up with local journalist Michelle and terrified-yet-adventure-seeking waiter Glenn to go and investigate.

What secrets does the island hold? What are the locals hiding? And what's causing those blood-curdling screams that seem to be coming from that mysterious island in the dead of night?

Calm Waters is a 2D classic point and click thriller/mystery/horror influenced by the likes of Lost and Twin Peaks.

Calm Waters features:

- Professional voice actors
- Full 1080p HD 2D pre-rendered backgrounds
- Intriguing characters
- An immersive story full of twists and turns
- An atmospheric soundtrack

Yeah all volume menus are maxed out so I'm not sure what's going on there. Any other things I've compiled all seem to work fine though.

No problem and yes, I found that link earlier. I'm very impressed with the capabilities and sheer professionalism that this add-on brings to the table.

One little thing I've noticed though is that the demo doesn't play any audio or music once built as an APK and tested on an Android device (two in fact). I'm not sure though if this is something I'm not doing right or if it's a bug?

This looks absolutely amazing, Mr. Man of Ice.

Seriously considering purchasing this for the Dick LaRenzo reboot I'm planning on after Calm Waters.

The £40 is reasonable and I was going to purchase but bloody Unity/PayPal add a £15 added tax on top of it, bring it to £55 which is a little steep right now. I'll be purchasing very soon though. I am genuinely intrigued.

EDIT: Couldn't resist. Just purchased :)

It's clear that Jane's been influenced by Calm Waters ;)

Hey Mods

Thanks for reporting those issues. I've gone ahead and recoded how the music is executed - the problem was using Channels for the different audio elements. It worked fine on the systems I tested it on but obviously isn't on everyone else's.

I've gone ahead and re-uploaded the download file anyhow from the same link.

Regarding speech, it CAN be skipped be simply pressing any key on the keyboard. Monkey Island used this exact same style.

About the double-speed - I'd already toyed with is before but it just looks comical and that'll take away from the atmosphere - that's the last thing I want to do. The option to increase game speed is in the Settings though so that's an option I suppose.

Hi Khris

Thanks for the notes. I actually fixed the error bug with a new upload so I'm presuming you downloaded the first one.

The walking/animation has been the biggest problem. I'm thinking of cancelling diagonal view altogether as this is where most of the issues come from.

You can't skip with the mouse because it's easy to accidently skip things. That's why it's keyboard only, like Monkey Island does.

The OGG Theora playback issues are what's really slowing down Calm Waters being released on Android. I'd really love this issue to be resolved. The game features a large amount of video cutscenes so this is a vital requirement for me.

What resolution is this running at?

Ok
I'm not good programmer but i'll try it.Thanks anyway.

I tested 1280x720 for big GUI and a simple alpha channel rain and character on D3D.
Unfortunately i found stutter and slow show in fade GUI and move player.Of course i know it's depend to engine.I change cash ram size in winsetup too.but don't change anything.
What ways do you recommend for achieve to more speed?

This could be simply down to your computer specs. What specs have you got?

Exactly - this is the one thing I've been wanting for the last year or so. I really hope you get this to work. I need my game to be in APK/OBB for the Google Play Store. So are you thinking of offering this as a service or as a package that we download and use ourselves?
#15
I'd be more than willing to test this and will be needing Calm Waters porting on to Android at some point so I'll do whatever I can to help out - Just let me know what you need me to do.
#16
This sounds great, Monkey. Unfortunately I'm on 4.0 so can't offer to help unfortunately but I'm sure someone else will be able to.

How are you managing to create the APKs within 50mb and implementing OBB files?

A MYSTERY THRILLER

We are currently looking for 2 female voice actors to fulfil 2 minor character roles in our upcoming commercial mystery/thriller, Calm Waters.

You can read about Calm Waters at the links below:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=45984.0
https://www.facebook.com/calmwatersgame

THE ROLES WE REQUIRE FILLING:

- Female receptionist of a hotel:
30-40 year old female. Greek or English accent but prefer Greek. Polite, well-spoken, but ever-so-slightly peculiar. Not obviously peculiar but she's perhaps a little TOO polite. Around 20-30 lines.

- Female drunk:
45-50 year old female. Slightly drunk but 100% clear to the listener. Very genuinely emotionally upset and drinking to forget. Comes across as a sad, lonely woman with a broken heart. Around 40-50 lines.

The game is a thriller/mystery so all performances must be played extremely seriously.

The chosen actors will each receive a free downloadable copy of Calm Waters for the PC.

If anyone's interested then please PM on here for details.

Thanks a lot everyone :)

Cheers Stu :)

We've now got a mention over on adventuregamers.com - http://www.adventuregamers.com/news/view/25232

Ok...But I'm confused as to why I need to remove the font and use a blank one...Plus, if I remove the font, surely it'll be blank for when the characters are speaking normally?

Also, I receive the error "GUI set as text window but is not actually a text window GUI". I've had to use a normal GUI as you can't add labels to TextGUIs.

EDIT: You've cracked it, Calin. Thanks a lot pal, you're a life-saver. Making the speech font invisible worked a treat :)

But I want the text to appear on the Thinking GUI, along with the speech. Or am I being extremely thick and missing something, haha!
