Critics' Lounge / NES inspired song
Fri 03/06/2016 16:10:47
Hi guys. I've been stuck for a day or so, and thought that some critique or any input at all might get my inspiration flowing again. Any thoughts are welcome.

I just always assumed it was my smell that drove 'em all away.
Your smell led me back.

Is the radiator heated?

Ooh, he ended up in Sydney? I hope they're having a nice life there. :)
So does anyone here still have some contact with him?

I've been searching, but haven't found any info. Why isn't he around anymore? I miss the dude.

this is a very clever method to create snow! Did you come up with this just when you did read the thread?
Yeah I was trying to animate it by hand at first, but it was too time consuming.

This is why I think the "animated background" feature should be removed. It only serves to confuse newbies.

You're NOT limited to five frames, because the right way to do this is to make a fullscreen, non-clickable object in the room, and set it to display an animated view, which can have basically unlimited frames.

I agree making an animated object is much much better. Though I'd like the bg frames to stay in as I frequently use them to make different lighting levels for a room.

Someone should really do a comprehensive list of all the different weather modules/plugins, quickly documenting their features, limitations and APIs, and their compatibility with different AGS versions (+ availability, though I'm sure they're all backed up somewhere). Then we should sticky it.

(The type path thing is a great trick. Meanwhile, I again have to rant against relying on multi-frame backgrounds for animation, with their built-in five-frame limit.)

If the plugins work then that's awesome. But having a 5-frame animation should be fine for a start screen.

Can talk on skype later if you need more.

I didn't save the PSD, but i can make a video showing the technique. I'm not good at explaining things in english.

Yes they are just simple periods in various fonts, opacity and boldness. Took me about 30 minutes to figure out a good way to do it, and another 20 to actually use the technique from scratch.

And yes I will give you all the info as soon as I have time to sit down again.

How about something like this? I just used the Type tool along some paths. 5 frames animation.

That sign did the trick. Well done.

Ah I understand now. Try and imagine that you are painting small hills, to help you with the shading. Grass is usually a sea of very subtle hills/bumps.
And if you look at the reference pics, you can see that there's a "sea of green" but thanks to having grass strands where the green meets something else, it looks nice. Also shaping the edges of any dropped shadows into strands helps a lot. Like in this example. I realise that it's not the most beautiful grass but I just wanted to show what I mean. :)

Maybe it gives you some ideas.

Synthetique,

The grass against the wall looks really good. That does help! Thanks.

One thing that I've struggled with is when I tried to apply texturing like that to the whole image it just becomes a mess. Maybe the solution is to only apply it selectively. I'm trying to avoid having a static sea of green for my grass. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks again.

I'm having some trouble visualizing what you mean, but i'd like to help when I understand what you mean ^^

I think the road behind the dog house is hard to see. And the far background is hard to tell apart from the rest. I wouldn't immediately understand that I could walk there.
But my main issue is that the brown colour on the various objects are so similar that they confuse the eyes for a minute.

I love the house. For example, the colour variations in the red bricks and the porch fence are very nice.  That's what I'd like to see in the rest of the bg. :)

I had some trouble putting it into words, so i butchered your image instead. Just a tiny idea that might inspire you.
