Thanks everyone for your responses. I understand that a huge amount of work goes into these games; I'm not expecting something of the quality of The Shiva or Ben Jordan in the time period available. What I'm interested in is a brief game, with fairly simple graphics, that would also have some specific appeal to my girlfriend. That said, I'd also like to make a game that other people can enjoy as well.
I'm a comedy writer by profession, so it would be easiest for me to make the game a comedy, and the amount of money I'd be willing to spend would be in the region of $500, possibly more depending on the amount of time spent on the game. I can discuss some ideas for the plot and format of the game in more detail, but roughly speaking, I'm thinking of a comedy/detective style game in the tradition of "Space Quest". I recognize the experience and skill of the people here, so I'm willing to defer to their expertise. Our anniversary is in a couple of weeks, but I'd be happy to give this to her in a month or two to make it as good as possible.
alkis21, Diamonds in the Rough looks incredible. It would be an honour to work with you if you'd be willing to consider a project on this small a scale.
