ok, i think we've given this epic blitz more than enough time.

if i can still count properly, darth mandarb wins by a short hand, closely followed by wanderlady and kaaz.
congratulations, young fellow !

Quote from: Dragonrose on Fri 05/03/2004 14:53:59about the only kind of movie that I can think of that I don't like are Soviet Propaganda films (The Red and the White and Mother... soooooo bad).

it's beyond me how anyone could dislike Alexander Nevsky, though.

"what are you doing ?"
"i'm fishing !"

i bet CJ's real name is actually Lionel Fitzsimmons.
Obviously he decided to preserve his identity by using a fake, mysterious name like Chris Jones.

let's see.

i like loominous' for the gloomy mood, but like it was said, it doesn't really match the chosen topic.

Mr Colossal's just doesn't look as uninviting as the other submissions (i wish i had the same wallpaper in my room by the way).

i like the angle and details on wanderlady's.

kaaz has a really nice style, but the pic feels somewhat unfinished to me.

in the end, i'm voting for DM's.
i can't say its quality beats every other entry, but i consider it the best rendition of the subject "seedy hotel room".

we'll have to give this a few more hours and hope for more votes...

technically it ended 13 hours ago.
so yeah, start voting guys.

not sure yet which to choose, i'll throw my vote later.

No need to worry,

It turns out we were all part of a tangental universe that has since been reversed thanks to the awesome powers of the reciever.

I won't mention who the reciever is in order to protect his family from any danger, just know that thanks to his sacrifice we are all safe.

excuse me- why do you wear that stupid bunny suit ?

this topic confuses me.
what qualifies a band as underrated ?

sure, the average joe doesn't know mike patton or fugazi, but in their respective "scenes", they are considered seminal artists.
same for the bad brains, any self-respecting hardcore kid knows them...

i'd agree about the black heart procession, but it's not a field i'm familiar with, so it doesn't mean a thing. there are probably people who believe the exact opposite, who knows ?

to me, some underrated bands would be 999, the saints or the rich kids, who didn't get the coverage they deserved. unlike the damned, the stranglers, richard hell, etc.
but once again, someone who's not into punk would never call the damned and the buzzcocks "legends".

damn... i really like the entries so far, won't be easy to pick a favorite.

mr c, did you realise your (lovely) paintover doesn't fit the required size ?

hi folks, sorry for the delay. anyway...
i decided to stay in the spirit of the last blitz. the subject this time is : "a seedy hotel room"

whether it was in an 80's b-movie, a detective novel or during your summer vacation, you've most likely seen at least one of those before.
try to think of all the elements that could contribute to give an unpleasing atmosphere to your background : the decoration, furniture, lighting, etc etc...
the room should look uninviting above all, whatever style you go for.

the resolution must be either 320x200 or 320x240.
you can use as many colors as you need.
have fun :)

thanks for the comments guys, they're appreciated.

Pessi, i totally see what you mean about the shadows. i tried going for something different first, but it didn't come out too well so i ended up throwing those shadows in without too much consideration, i'm afraid.

my vote goes to Dorcan, mainly because of the work on the lighting which gives the scene an interesting atmosphere.
you definitely displayed the best technique.

DM's unique style looks good as usual, but i also think it's hard to make it work well with a serious theme like this one.
by the way, i only noticed afterwards that your setting was near the docks ! that was the first idea that came to mind after i read the topic of the blitz. maybe we just watch the same movies :)

here we go ! it's still a bit messy but i don't want to let you wait more.
now that i see it in small size with my desk lamp turned on, it looks way too dark. oh well...

again, great job guys. it's a shame we don't see more entries.
#12
thanks, just give me half an hour and i'll upload it !
#13
pessi, can i ask you to wait for my submission before closing the blitz ?
i started working on this yesterday because i didn't see the thread before... it should be finished soon, otherwise i'll just post it the way it is.
very inspiring subject, and good entries !

I didn't say it sucked.
In fact, my first thought when i saw your sprite was that i liked the shading. but the problem is that you didn't even try to imitate the shading used in full throttle, you just made an almost-perfect copy. hell, even the colors of the jacket are exactly the same.
I don't have a problem with the fact that you character looks like Ben, i have a problem with the fact that you copied graphics from an existing character.
It's your choice to do that, but i'm just letting you know that some people like me can have a problem with this proceeding.

if you still want criticism : the head is not properly centered on the shoulders. the hand is too round and lacks shading. the pixel-size is not consistent (look at the boots). the jacket lapel(sp?) looks flat. other than that, i'm not sure what is original work and what is just copied, so i don't have much to add.

oh, and believe it or not, i don't visit this forum in hope of finding someone to bash. if i don't like something, i don't post "hey! that sucks", i try to give suggestions.
but this time it wasn't a matter of liking or not.
#15
talk about a rip-off.
using an existing character for reference is not the same thing than literally copying it.
sorry, but don't expect me to give c&c on a work that is not yours.

thanks for the tip, but the way the panels are laid down, it's impossible to divide the page without cutting through them...
i just need a scanner in an open area, then i can scan each board in two parts without having to cut it. i'll do it when i have access to one at college.
#17
just wanted to point that i have the same problem matt described in the tech forum.

otherwise, the trailer is awesome in every aspects - music, artwork/animation, dialogs,... and i'm glad this game will be longer than the first.
#18
you're welcome.
don't worry too much about the lettering, it's one of the easy parts to assimilate imo, since it doesn't require "artistic skills" as much as the rest.

i've done some comic works for an art class project, but no full-length book like you're doing. i contemplate making one, but first i have to practice more, and of course i need a solid script before starting.
i have some boards in my room, but they're all A3-sized and i can't use the scanner without folding them.
#19
Geneva, eh ? Maybe I've met an AGSer in real life without knowing it. I'm all worked-up now.

my first impression is that the style is enjoyable.
i think i could read 40 pages like these and not get bored, and that's the most important thing after all.

i don't have much to say about the drawings themselves. i like pure b&w ink comics better, but you're doing alright imo. the pov's are well varied.
only crit is that the pencil strokes are too visible in certain filled areas.

now for what bothers me the most :
first, i agree with what loominous said about the font and the placement of the text in the balloons.
i suggest that you use a font expressly made for comics, they're not too hard to find (try www.blambot.com for instance).
or better yet, find yourself a good, sharp ink pen and write the dialogs by hand. that's what i do.

also, i strongly suggest that you draw the panel frames and balloons by hand. the 1 pixel-wide, perfectly straight lines are really really not appropriate imo, and the balloons are a little too generic for my tastes.

otherwise, i think you're on the right track. good luck with this project.
