Ok, I might get flamed for this, but I have a question...

Back in the ol' days, when AGS was a DOS-only program, there was a feature called graphic scripts, which was basically drag and drop srcipting. While it may have slowed the game down sometimes, (or so Im told, I neve noticed anything, and my pc is only about 900mhz), it was a lot easier to script things, and you could still get fancy with it.

Is there any chance a new release or something could implement these again? I still think it was a great way to get the feet wet into text scripting, and rewriting all of my old graphic scripts into normal scripts is a serous pain the arse.

Am I being unresonible? any chance for a one-shot deal, with a windows version of AGS with graphic script capibilities?

The COMPLETE INDIANA JONES DVD SET!!!11 (this is particularly cool, cause our dvd collection prior to this consisted of monsters inc, and the mormon chirstmas movie, joy to the world)
a jazz cd
silk boxers (wtf?? sister has a warped sense of humor)
a best buy gift card
and two little pieces of paper. One showing that the civ3 expansion pack, (conquests) will be ariving sometime in the next few days, and the other the amazon.com order slip for "the complete history of american foriegn policy", which will also be arriving in a few days

I come before you, oh mighty-creative AGS mast0rz, with a problem.

As some of you know, the marching band at my high school was cut in favor of a steel drum band. This year, the school administration promised me that if I can convice 30 kids to sign up, we can have a new one. The propaganda blitz is on.

After a few semi-sucsessful stunts, I think I've found a medium that might be a winner. The school newspaper is selling ad space in it for the rest of the year. I am going to go buy ad space in every issue to pimp marching band, but I need some clever ad ideas.

Heres what I have
a) Picture of little middle schooler with uncle sam beard taped to his face, pointing towards the reader. It says ROBBIE WANTS YOU TO JOIN THE MARCHING BAND
b) Picture of a cute kitten. Caption: Join Marching Band today, or the kitten gets it,
c) All Text: Join marching band...you know you arent good enough for football.

I'd like some more ideas. The ad can have pictures, text, anything.

General Discussion / Howard Dean wrote me!!
Wed 17/09/2003 00:24:36
...Or rather, somebody in the Dean Camp wrote me. it doesnt matter. I'm tickled, cause my question was really kind of joke.

A few days ago, John Kerry challegened Dean to a debate. That same day, I saw Kerry playing guitar with a band on C-SPAN. They were trying to play 10th avenue freeze out, by bruce springsteen. They SUCKED. after watching this, I got an idea...

Dear Mr.Dean
I know you are a very busy man, but I have an interesting suggestion as you campaign for president.
(here I told him the above infomation)
Now...here's my idea. During the 92 and 96 campaigns, Clinton played his Sax at many jazz festivals, and the people loved it. It made him look cool.

On that not, instead of debating Kerry, why dont you get a group of musically talented democrats together, and challege his band to a battle?

Such a gimick would attract lots of viewers, and give attention to your campaign, and it would increase your image with the public.

Thanks for your time sir, and good luck!

and this is what they said!!!

Dear Matthew,
Thank you for the interesting suggestion regaurding a music battle with mr.kerry. We'll certainly remember that one.

then they tell me all this pro-dean stuff I can do...which I might

yeah, I know they blew me off, but I dont care. they took the time to write me back, on a half-asses stunt. I certainly intend on asking them more serious things now, now that I know they will listen.
Isnt that cool?

I wonder if all people running for president will do that

Hey, I just changed the name to my company to Look Out Ladies Productions, (from stinkysoft). I did this for three reasons

a) Stinky Software just wasnt funny anymore
b) its a clever homestar reference, and the brothers chaps said I could do it, so long as I cite them
c) the aconym is LOL productions, which also stands for laugh out loud. I try to make funny games, so this works out kinda well.

Thus, I made a rather large update on my website. so, check it out, tell me what else I ought to put on here, slogan ideas, etc.

thanks guys

Yesterday was a very important day in small, rural town America. High School Football started. a reason for just about everybody in town to get out of their house, and mosey on down to the local high school football shrine to pay respects to kids they dont even know, hurl foul words at officals and kids from the other school (now, for a few hours, mortal foes, locked in a deathmatch) and drink beer.

In some schools, this really is life. Schools where there isnt enough money to buy textbooks plung down 6 hundred thousand buck football stadiums to fit 30000+ people.

I normally wouldnt go to these barbaric gladitoral battles, (not because I dont like football, and it is nice to see my pals from school, but the disgusting behavior of the adults who live thru their kids...or kids they dont even know is such a turn off I dont want to be there. That, and the odd racist remark I get hurled at me in the more rural communities I venture), but I am in the local band, and I am also the school sportswriter.

I am planing on doing an article on the youth football-crazed frenzy state america is in, but first, I have a question

Is there something like this is other parts of the world? In England, do schools plunk down half a million euro soccer stadiums, and have tens of thousands of screeming, drunk grown ups go into a frenzy over 15 year olds? Does this happen with Cricket in Austrialia? Or is this friday night fever one of those "only in america" things?

General Discussion / most important book?
Mon 18/08/2003 03:19:47
Hey, I thought this might be an interesting topic of discussion

what do you think, excluding religious texts, has been the most important book written? by important, I mean influencual (sp?) history altering, powerful, etc.

My vote goes to the Communist Manefsto, by Karl Marx. This book helped spawn one of the biggest political movements ever, which lead o the creation of a superpower, a dangerous semi-war, and whose docterines were perverted by many a misguided leader into creating corrupt and evil dictatorships

Also getting votes are The Jungle, and the little red book.

your thoughts?

General Discussion / am I going to jail?
Wed 13/08/2003 21:39:11
okay, here's my little story.

I am running way low on disk space on my computer, so I deleted one of my favorite games, NHL 2002. today, since I had freed up enough room, I decided to re-install it. problem: I lost my CD case. So, since I bought the game, I didnt see a problem going off to hunt for a CD key.

Well, I want finding much luck online, until I saw a German Website. I clicked "translate site" Suddenly, my screen brought up a window that said that my computer had been tracked, my IP logged, and I was busted and was going to be investigated. It then named by ISP.

Im scared as crap, since I dont know if this was fake or not. I dont think I did anything wrong, but I dont want to lose my interent, or the fact that I have no criminal record.

do you guys think that was real? if so, what should I do?

I've been on vacation this past week, and I've seen the all hell had broken loose. I've read a few of these posts, and I guess I've kinda taken it to heart.

I wont be posting (except in tech forums, for when I need help) Until I have more to show on my game. see, I've cranked out a full game, and two demos, but with the exception of TGC, they were crap. I havent done music for anybody, and I've tested one game, and didnt do a great job.

and, I post a lot. I liked the company. but that isnt what this place is about.

I'll be back, but not until I can justify myself. once I get another demo to show you, I will have felt that I have taken the break I needed, and done the work I need, to justify my staying.

no hard feelings.  I dont feel unwelcome. I just have some work to do.

Okay, I know this sort of thing is mentioned in teh manual, but I think I need it explained in a different way...

I want to have my game set so when one presses the "s" key, a message displays their current score out of possible points. I think the built-in GUI varibles doohicky for score would work here, (like, display "@score out of @totalscore, or whatever those are) but if I have to create a global int, and use other varibles, lemme know.

I dont however, know where or what to put for the script for teh whole pressing S part. please enlighten me

thanks guys!
#15
hey, if I wanted to play a sound everytime the player quit the game, to I just slap a Playsound(1); and a Wait(whatever) in the game script, or do I need to do something else?
#16
I'm trying to learn how to use variables, and I got an error in my first script.

// room script file
int computer_cd;

function hotspot2_a() {
 // script for hotspot2: Interact hotspot
 if (computer_cd == 0) {
   DisplayMessage(7);
   AddInventory(2);
 }
 if (computer_cd == 1) {
   Display("you have taken all the CD's there are.");
 }
 if (computer_cd == 2) {
   Display("Yo. listen to what I'm saying foo. no CD.");
 }
 if (computer_cd == 3) {
   Display("Teh Computer has nothing left to give.");
 }
 if (computer_cd < 3) {
   computer_cd += 1;
 }
function object0_a() {
 // script for object0: Interact object
DisplayMessage(15);
ObjectOff(0);
GiveScore(10);
AddInventory(1);
}

have an error in line 22, saying nested functions not supported....

help?

forums not working? big problem, or little problem?
#18
okay, here is a possible first room in the game. there are a few things that I know need to be fixed, (keyboard, door, empty space) but I'm not really sure how. If somebody could please enlighten me, so my art skills can continue to progress from my last game

okay, first I'd like to say I'm sorry for posting a bmp. I saved this file as a gif and a jpeg, and it got all messed up. the picture is tiny anyways. I hope

right, here is a sprite from the game I'm making. I'd like to change this horrible picture into a more orginal-looking sprite without the photo. Can anybody help me? any particular way of going about this? (

the bigest thing is to make the head normal sized, yet still kinda looking that way.

http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/othersidematt1.bmp

EDIT: whoa, didn't know that was gonna happen. sorry, call me stupid. if there is way to save it in a smaller format and have the colors stay close to normal, could somebody let me know? I dont want to suck up bandwith or anything
