General Discussion / Room escape theme party
Wed 28/04/2021 13:22:09
Mia (aka monkey425) had her birthday recently and this year we did a room escape theme party! It was heaps of fun and no one got hurt! Check out the 3 min video!

Furthermore, fellow parents might be familiar with the show Teen Titans Go - the characters make an appearance in a colour-code type puzzle which involved using AGS! The most exciting part of this puzzle is once the correct colour combination is entered, the program makes use of AGS's completely-useless-until-now CD-Eject function and the next clue (a DVD) is spit out of the laptop!

Completed Game Announcements / SLEUTH
Thu 10/12/2020 11:47:47

Forget Holmes. Forget Poirot.
Detective Daniel Wilkins is the man for the job!

SLEUTH (2020) is a rebooted "idiotic point and click" version of the original 1983 text-based “whodunit” DOS game of the same title. A murder has taken place at Bastard Estate and you must interrogate the resident houseguests to find the murderer. Be quick, or else the murderer may decide to get rid of you first! As is customary in these sort of detective games, you should also find the murder weapon for good measure.

Game page --> HERE

Thanks again to all those who helped me with this project!

Enjoy!

The Rumpus Room / AGS Symposium
Tue 29/10/2019 12:16:10
FYI I'm attending this AGS event tomorrow. Any items you'd like me to raise on behalf of the AGS community?

Jokes and amusing abbreviations aside, you might have noticed my presence on the forums again this recent week. I had a sudden urge to work on this unfinished game after playing a bit of Day of the Tentacle recently with my daughter (now 6) and I can finally see light at the end of a long tedious tunnel. So besides attending to the demands of family, work, and symposiums, I'll be quietly plodding along with my game.

Hope everyone's good and staying out of trouble.

Recruitment / Voices and music for SLEUTH
Wed 23/10/2019 12:28:37
This game has been in suspended animation for a while but I'm happy to announce I'll work on it again. Game development thread HERE. In brief, the game involves interrogating a bunch of oddball characters to ascertain the murderer. Style is somewhat similar to Day of the Tentacle and the concept is based on a 1983 DOS game of the same title.

I'm after voice artists and music. Many characters have already been voiced as indicated below with several outstanding. A fellow AGSer kindly composed a few tracks (and they sound fantastic!) but he has since moved on to other commitments and I was hoping others could help out with the rest. Plan B is to use free material sourced online and suggestions for this would be welcomed too. Note the music must be in MIDI format.

Thanks guys.

Alternative Knowledge Topic #2: WikipediaLink here

I don't know why our great and powerful moderator keeps locking these threads.

QuoteOne conspiracy thread at a time is enough. If you want to offer these points as arguments, you can do so in the other thread.

That "other thread" is a cesspool of muddled-up information, which is why I wanted to start fresh.

And let's not forget the word "conspiracy" is CIA propaganda. Or did you miss that point completely, Snarky?

This thread is about knowledge. Pretty simple.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A study of history shows that civilizations that abandon the quest for knowledge are doomed to disintegration."
- Bernard Lovell, British astronomer and writer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me preface this by humbly saying that I am by no means an expert on the controversial subjects that I'm attempting to bring to light. Conversely, I think it's safe to say that those participating in the discussion (if given a chance to do so) are no more an expert than I. I'll freely admit that I can be naive about some things and I don't know everything. However, we all have blind spots – everyone – and anyone claiming to "know better" is fooling themselves. The only way you can know ANYTHING and to have a constructive discussion is to talk about facts and evidence, with lesser emphasis on views, opinions, theories, and so forth. Talking about history is good but be wary that history is written by the winners and truths tend to get buried. Arnold Rimmer from Red Dwarf alludes to this point here.

[embed=425,349]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGISD6UmXxo[/embed]

I am in the process of learning (or re-learning as the case may be) and posing here not just to share information but also to consolidate my own understanding of ideas and issues. I'm not trying to be a guru or anything like that, and I hate being in the spotlight, but I guess I've taken on this role because I feel it's important. The world as I see it now is one of complexity and deception on a scale like we've never seen before. I was born in the early 80s and therefore did not really experience the end of the Cold War (I was only 6 years old when the Berlin Wall fell). Growing up in the 90s, the concept of war seemed like distant history - a thing of the past, not the present. To be fair, I was aware of war on some level as one my earliest friends was from Lebanon and had experienced war as a child before his family relocated to Australia. But other than stories from abroad, life in Australia was pretty sheltered. I'm telling you this to give you an idea of my background and level of experience and knowledge. Those who live abroad (particularly those in non-Western countries) may have a better idea or at least a different perspective on some of these issues.

Ideological Subversion

"Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."
- Winston Churchill

Continuing with the theme of intellectual terrorism, the role of intelligence agencies comes into question. How much do you know about them? Bear in mind it might be a skewed perception of what they actually do. It gets even more complicated when you consider that individuals within the intelligence agencies themselves might not even be aware of the full picture. The idea of disinformation and double-agents adds yet another dimension to the tangled web of intelligence. But before we get too excited and start thinking about potential adventure game plots, let's attempt to separate fact from fiction.

One thing that you may not know about the KGB was its role and primary function relating to psychological warfare during the Cold War. According to former Soviet agent Yuri Bezmenov, only 15% of the KGB's time, money and manpower was devoted to espionage and covert activity, the type typically glorified by Hollywood in the form of James Bond-style flicks. In actuality most of the KGB's resources (the remaining 85%) was spent on a four-step process called "Ideological Subversion".

According to Bezmenov, the aim of Ideological Subversion was to change the perception of reality to such an extent that, despite an abundance of information, no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interests of defending themselves, their family, their community and their country. The goal was to weaken a country, strip its culture and corrupt their values to a point of complete vulnerability. It's a great brainwashing process that goes very slow.

The four steps in the process are:

1. Demoralization.
2. Destabilization.
3. Crisis.
4. Normalization.

Here is a short snippet from an interview with Bezmenov from the 80s.

[embed=425,349]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bX3EZCVj2XA[/embed]

Here are some longer videos, specifically:

1. The longer version of the interview in which Bezmenov talks about his life working for the KGB in India and how he escaped / defected to Canada (here).
2. A 1983 lecture on subversion to an American audience (here).

Whether you accept this guy as legitimate / relevant or not, he does present some compelling ideas and should make you wonder if subversion currently infiltrates Western society. I would argue that it is does, quite blatantly, and it is not necessarily the Soviets or any one group pulling the strings.

General Discussion / Alternative Knowledge
Mon 25/01/2016 22:09:27
Well, we're off to a good start...

My initial 9/11 post was moved around and buried here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=51989.260

(Deep breath)

I started this thread by revisiting the 9/11 issue but do not intend to restrict discussions to this topic. Rather, this thread is intended to be about "alternative knowledge". I've intentionally used this phrase rather than "conspiracy theory" in consideration of the following:

a) Not everything is a theory, even if it is perceived so.
b) "Conspiracy theory" is a manipulative term as outlined below.

In other words, this thread is intended to be about things we can know, based on evidence, and can be used to explore underlying realities. The discussion does not necessarily have to involve wild speculation or theory.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternative Knowledge Topic #1:
Origin of "Conspiracy Theory"

The term "conspiracy theory" has become firmly rooted in pop culture. In the world of fiction, the concept can flourish (e.g. Dan Brown books, 007 movies). However in the real world, the phrase tends to put people off and discourage any attempt at serious discussion. This is the case at least in Western culture. In this regard it is a form of intellectual terrorism. But are you aware of the origin of the term?

Historical Context

The term "conspiracy theory" and its strong negative connotation was popularised by the CIA who hijacked the term and effectively "weaponized" it. This article gives some background:

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2014/05/dont-fooled-conspiracy-theory-smears.html

Apparently the CIA distributed a memo to its agents in response to growing public skepticism toward the Warren Commission's findings on the assassination of JFK. The declassified memo titled "Countering Criticism of the Warren Commission Report" played a definitive role in making the "conspiracy theory" term a weapon to be wielded against almost any individual or group calling the government's increasingly covert programs and activities into question.

Document 1035-960

Summary

The memo outlines a detailed series of actions and techniques to counter and discredit the claims of conspiracy theorists. Instructions to agents include:

a) Employ propaganda assets to refute the attacks of the critics through medium such as book reviews and articles.
b) Advise covert assets in the media to ignore conspiracy claims unless discussion is already taking place.
c) Direct agents to remind their friendly elite contacts (such as politicians and editors) of the Warren Report's integrity and urge them to use their influence to discourage speculation.

The memo also details the additional to counter conspiratorial arguments:

1. Claim the charges of the critics are without serious foundation, based on unreliable eyewitness testimony for example.
2. Claim it would be impossible to conceal a large-scale conspiracy.
3. Claim that further speculative discussion only plays into the hands of the opposition.
4. Claim that no significant new evidence has emerged.
5. Accuse theorists of falling in love with their theories.
6. Claim conspiracy theorists are wedded to their theories before the evidence was in.
7. Accuse theorists of being politically motivated.
8. Accuse theorists of being financially motivated.

A short video about the above is here (just watch 5 minutes from the set point at 25:19). Don't bother with the rest of the video though – it's one of those long ones!

Another interesting article related to this topic (here) lists 25 rules of disinformation (scroll to the bottom for the actual list of 25 points).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alternative Knowledge Topic #2:
Wikipedia

Whilst Wikipedia does have entries about certain "conspiracy" (alternative knowledge topics), its coverage is often wildly inaccurate and serious omissions are made. People attempting to make corrections are never successful - they get blocked and the pages are set back to how they were. Wikipedia editors/moderators are anonymous and not accountable for their actions. Refer to Abraham Hafiz Rodriguez's attempt to post a page about Dr Judy Wood's research (here). Try and find a real name in any of the history of discussion of changes to an article. Students at school and university are often discouraged from using Wikipedia as a reference, due to the lack of integrity it has. Yet links to its pages often come at the top of most google searches.

Is anyone familiar with the 9/11 research by Dr Judy Wood?

Long video (~2.5 hrs)

http://youtu.be/bITl3lmbWb8

Short video (~15mins)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hBG1LBALXQ&sns=em

I discovered Dr Wood's work earlier this year and have become obsessed with it. Her research is not conspiracy theory. It is evidence. And it is overwhelming evidence too. It is evidence that was somehow obscured from public awareness for a long time but is now readily available. And the evidence must be explained.

I like Dr Wood's approach to the subject. She presents information in a methodical, captivating and creative way. But it's the actual evidence she presents that speaks for itself. It is simply mind boggling.

I felt compelled to share this. People need to know this.

9/11 was basically a crime scene. The first question we ask in any crime is WHAT happened. Then HOW it happened. Then finally WHO did it and WHY. The problem is we were told the answer to those last two questions immediately after the event but bypassed the important first question of WHAT THE FUCK actually happened!

I personally remember watching the horror of 9/11 on the family TV as it unfolded. It was shortly before my final exams at high school and I was 18 years old. It all seemed so surreal and unbelievable. But everyone just accepted the images we were watching and the accompanying interpretation and side stories. I think we'd all been conditioned by similar scenes and plots from dozens of movies we'd all watched prior to the tragic event.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was the government agency responsible for explaining the technical aspects of the demise of the World Trade Center buildings (including building 7). I believe Dr Wood is the only person to date to refute the NIST reports by filing a formal request for corrections.

While the implications of Dr Wood's research are mind blowing, I find it more unbelievable that more people didn't see the reality from the start. The evidence was right there all along and witnessed by many. The only thing missing from 9/11 was a movie soundtrack.

The Rumpus Room / MONKEY424 vs THE POSSUM
Sun 25/01/2015 22:07:54
As you may be aware, we've got a possum problem here in the kingdom of 424.

A cheeky possum has made itself at home in our roof!

Last time we had a possum in our roof (a few years ago) I kindly built a possum box which I hung in the tree and then relocated the possum's nest from the roof into the box. The possum moved into its new home within a couple of days. I thoughtfully added a door flap for privacy. We named the possum Popcorn and it was the star attraction of the neighborhood until she died that following year.

But this time..

No more Mr Nice Guy!

Using bits of scrap wood, and a chest of drawers I just found on the side of the road, I constructed this possum trap.

Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!!

Here's a test run..

[embed=425,349]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrNzJBCV1jU[/embed]

As laws here prohibit killing our native possums, we will instead have the traditional BBQ lamb for lunch.

If capturing the possum is successful I will release it on the other side of the river and hopefully it will stay there!

The Rumpus Room / AGS ANTHEMS Vol. 2
Sun 14/12/2014 05:10:38
Well folks, winter is here.. Unless you live in the southern hemisphere, where it's currently another perfect summer's day. Nothing but sun, sand and surf, and the cool sounds of summer. So if you are currently having the winter blues, or the recent MAGS coldness theme is making you feel a tad down, then buck up bitch! Summer is back!

I need another mix CD for the upcoming summer holidays.

Previous collaborators on AGS Anthems Vol. 1 will be familiar with my pedantic mix methodology. But this time there is just one criteria: choose a song that reminds you of summer. It doesn't mean the song has to be about summer, just something that has some personal nostalgic connection with summer and chilled-out summer holidays. (Anything except Summer Nights from Grease).

Here's a start. There's a funky new song currently getting lots of airtime on a hip local radio station that I want to share..

Human Animal by Total Giovanni

The Rumpus Room / My boss is a wanker
Thu 30/10/2014 12:04:33
Blast! Where's that moving thread when you need it? I need to vent! >:(

I'm venting here!

I got an email from the boss today questioning time I've spent on a recent project. After writing two furious replies (that I didn't send), I finally replied with a sensible breakdown of the work I believe I have done to date, ending with a humble apology (for apparent stroppiness I displayed sometime earlier). The exact work-hour details are recorded on our timesheet database, which he has access to. He has obviously just looked at my total hours without checking the detail. The hours make sense to me, I don't believe there is anything too out of the ordinary.

I've worked with this guy for many years now, and he is the most frustrating and bizarre character to work with. He is very knowledgeable, and I have great respect for him in that regard, but he is also highly disorganised and likes to blame everyone else when often he should really take responsibility himself. Most project managers are easy and pleasant to work with, but this guy is a real piece of work!

Dear AGSers, please indulge me with your stories of horrible bosses. Or nice bosses.

Or, if you are a manager yourself, please share your twisted view of the world. How did you become such a wanker?

Critics' Lounge / Is there a DJ in the house?
Wed 27/08/2014 06:05:21
I've created a pretty horrible sounding mix track and was wondering if there is a talented musician or DJ who could help me to improve it.

SPACE TAXI KRAFTWERK REMIX

The original audio is from SPACE TAXI which I've mixed with Kraftwerk's AUTOBAHN. I had to speed up the latter and slow down the former so they're about the same tempo (but perhaps a bit out still).

I'm after some opinions / advice.

Can it be improved? Should it be improved? Does it require minor tweaks or major reconstructive surgery? Or is it an abomination to be cast into the fire of Mt Doom?

The Rumpus Room / AGS Mix CD
Wed 13/08/2014 13:46:15
I like making mix CDs and over the years I've made dozens of them for friends and relatives. I've come to appreciate the art of making a compilation CD, with song selection and ordering being of uttermost importance. The first song needs to grab the listener's attention and I usually choose something highly energetic (e.g.Thunderstruck, by AC/DC) or alternatively something unexpected (e.g. Let the Good Times Roll, by Louis Jordan) which then leads into the next, more fitting song. After the initial sexed-up tracks, about mid-CD, I typically shift down a gear with some slower, mellow or melancholy songs (e.g. Thank You, by Dido). After the low point, the music returns again to a rejuvenated state and usually finishes with a climatic end track (e.g. Demon Days, by Gorillaz) or a comedic track (e.g. Eat It, by Weird Al Yankovic). The songs should flow too.

There have been previous topics on the forums where people discuss their favourite music or what they're currently listening to. This post takes it one step further in which contributors can post songs here to append to a playlist to create a mix CD, with the songs more or less following the structure I've outlined above. Ultimately I want to have a CD I can play in the car and I thought this might be a fun way to do it. I'll start by suggesting Saturday Night Palsy by TISM as track 2. Why track 2? Because it feels more like track 2 rather than track 1. Also, having it as track 2 prevents anyone from suggesting Song 2 by Blur.

DOWNLOAD ALBUM (76 MB)

PLAYLIST

So please suggest any song you think might fit in the compilation (or even a song you just like) and I'll update the playlist. I will accept any musical genre and in any language. At this stage can we please just have one suggestion per person, and later if the CD spills over 70 minutes of standard audio we can restart with another playlist and you may nominate another song.

Also if there are any other enthusiasts out there please share your style of making a mix CD. Does anyone get creative with album covers?

The Rumpus Room / Planet of the Apes
Thu 07/08/2014 13:16:27
I've just gone and seen Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Very cool movie (5 bananas) but I had to rent the previous movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes to remember what actually happened previously. I had a vague recollection of monkeys getting smart and going ape shit on the Golden Gate Bridge but couldn't remember much else. I'd also forgotten the title of the previous movie thinking it was Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (and that the more recent one was Rise of the Planet of the Apes). 'Dawn' and 'Rise' like the morning sun seem interchangeable to me. Logically the next movie in this sequence should be Morning Tea of the Planet of the Apes.

Is anyone else a fan of the rebooted Planet of the Apes series? What about the old movies? I've not seen them, apart from the Tim Burton one (which I quite liked actually).

..But more importantly, what should the title of the next installment be?

Is there any way for a non-player character to reap the benefit of the AreaSpecificView setting of a walkable area? I want my NPC to follow the main character and change views as the main character does (i.e. using AreaSpecificView). I suspect I may need to use regions instead?

For Chalkman fans, I'm sorry to report that I recently discovered a fatal bug that causes our titular character to freeze up at this one point near the end of the game.

As you can see, Chalkman exits the city and walks under the flags and then just freezes up like a stunned mullet. Or a deer in headlights, whichever idiom suits.

I missed this bug during earlier testing. Somehow it slipped through the cracks. I won't go into detail but the bug in question involved a rogue global variable that was misbehaving.

I'm happy to report that the bug is now fixed, along with some other minor bugs and typos, and the game has been re-uploaded to its hosting website gamejolt.

However, if you do encounter the bug and don't want to download the game again, then I recommend you download the following savegame file to restore at the critical moment.

Don't download this unless absolutely necessary!
Spoiler

Apologies for my naivety and haste with releasing a 'buggy' game and any inconvenience caused. A bug of this nature is unforgivable and I shall see that I'm duly punished (nipple clamps on standby).

Happy gaming!

Greetings!

I made some keyboard movement code for my game a while ago and wanted to rehash it for another game.

However I didn't bother to check that there was already a module for this by Khris:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=42843.0

For what it's worth, my code was:

Code: AGS
// main global script file

bool K[4];                  // K[0]=left; K[1]=right; K[2]=up; K[3]=down;
int  A[2];                  // A[0]=old; A[1]=new;  0 not moving , 1-4 four directions , 5-8 combination of directions

// ----------------------------------------------

// put anything you want to happen every game cycle in here
function repeatedly_execute()
{

  // -- DIRECTION KEYS ---- DIRECTION KEYS ---- DIRECTION KEYS --

  if (IsGamePaused() == 0) {

    if (IsKeyPressed(eKeyLeftArrow)   == 1)   K[0] = 1;    else K[0] = 0;
    if (IsKeyPressed(eKeyRightArrow)  == 1)   K[1] = 1;    else K[1] = 0;
    if (IsKeyPressed(eKeyUpArrow)     == 1)   K[2] = 1;    else K[2] = 0;
    if (IsKeyPressed(eKeyDownArrow)   == 1)   K[3] = 1;    else K[3] = 0;

    // -- No key pressed --
    if (K[0]+K[1]+K[2]+K[3] == 0) {

      if (A[1] != 0) {
        Chaz.StopMoving();
        A[1] = 0;
      }

    }

    // -- One key pressed --
    else if (K[0]+K[1]+K[2]+K[3] == 1) {

      if      (K[0] == 1) A[1] = 1;
      else if (K[1] == 1) A[1] = 2;
      else if (K[2] == 1) A[1] = 3;
      else if (K[3] == 1) A[1] = 4;

    }

    // -- Two keys pressed --
    else if (K[0]+K[1]+K[2]+K[3] == 2) {

      if      ((K[0] == 1) & (K[2] == 1)) A[1] = 5;
      else if ((K[1] == 1) & (K[2] == 1)) A[1] = 6;
      else if ((K[0] == 1) & (K[3] == 1)) A[1] = 7;
      else if ((K[1] == 1) & (K[3] == 1)) A[1] = 8;
      else {
        Chaz.StopMoving();
        A[1] = 0;
      }

    }

    // -- More than two keys pressed --
    else {
      Chaz.StopMoving();
      A[1] = 0;
    }

    // -- Walk in the direction picked --
    if (A[0] != A[1]) {

      A[0] = A[1];

      if      (A[1] == 1) Chaz.WalkStraight(0, Chaz.y, eNoBlock);                   // LEFT
      else if (A[1] == 2) Chaz.WalkStraight(Room.Width, Chaz.y, eNoBlock);          // RIGHT
      else if (A[1] == 3) Chaz.WalkStraight(Chaz.x, 0, eNoBlock);                   // UP
      else if (A[1] == 4) Chaz.WalkStraight(Chaz.x, Room.Height, eNoBlock);         // DOWN
      else if (A[1] == 5) Chaz.WalkStraight(0, Chaz.y - Chaz.x, eNoBlock);                            // LEFT-UP
      else if (A[1] == 6) Chaz.WalkStraight(Room.Width, Chaz.y + Chaz.x - Room.Width, eNoBlock);      // RIGHT-UP
      else if (A[1] == 7) Chaz.WalkStraight(0, Chaz.y + Chaz.x, eNoBlock);                            // LEFT-DOWN
      else if (A[1] == 8) Chaz.WalkStraight(Room.Width, Chaz.y - Chaz.x + Room.Width, eNoBlock);      // RIGHT-DOWN

    }

  }

}

I would actually like to see an update to the keyboard movement module to deal with the case when the character ('Chaz' in the above example) gets stuck when there is no immediate walkable area beyond the linear path designated upon key press (e.g. maybe there's only a few pixels discontinuing the path, but a slight detour around those missing pixles is possible).

It's not really urgent. I might look at doing this myself later down the track if no one else is interested.

Khris? Your thoughts? Feel free to borrow my code if you like.

Story: 5 days and counting
Scripting: N/A (the thing didn't come with a manual)
Visual: It's a girl last time we checked

PRESENTING..

Forget Holmes.

Forget Poirot.

And forget that Davenport character in Slasher's game.

Detective Daniel Wilkins is the man for the job!

Based on the original 1983 text-based "whodunit" game of the same title, this is my version, only with prettier graphics, and some adventure game elements.

I dabbled with this game over a decade ago with AGS 2.07. And now it's time to revive this RAM Ghost!

For now, however, the game will have to go on the back burner since another project will take priority - the birth of my daughter - due towards the end of this month!

Game is currently on middle burner and bubbling with potential.
