General Discussion / NostalGaming trouble...
Wed 16/03/2005 15:07:21
Hi!

Just wondered if anyone else has encountered and overcome the following problem:
When I play Win 95/98 games, such as Master of Orion II or Dungeon Keeper, they run in compatibility mode, but the mouse cursor takes ages to react on an input.
Any ideas what I could do?

Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / which cross? et al.
Thu 21/10/2004 16:32:24
Hi,

Finally started some graphic work again!
Right now I'm working on a 3D scene of a small medieval town and I've just done the town church:

now I have two questions:
1) what should the cross on top look like?
a)
b)
2) would you think it sensible to script a clock with RawDraw that shows the actual time?
#3
Hi!

About a year ago, I started using AGS and began making a game. I did some (~10) backgrounds and (~5) characters, developed a storyline, thought of some puzzles, did some scripting experiments... but with time passing I worked less and less frequently on the game and it has now come more or less to a standstill.
I do still want to complete it, but I haven't really had the nerve to work hours on a 3D Background or debug a faulty script.
At the moment I feel that I cannot complete a project like that all on my own...
I have no direct idea how (and if...) a partner could help, but I think that having help of other people would put me back into the mood again...

Maybe I just need someone to give me some advice how to organize and manage my work, and maybe ask me about my progress some time or another...

Unfortunately none of my RL friends is willing or interested to help me with that...

If you seriously think you could help me, please post and I will show you some pieces of my work to give a clearer impression.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

When I start the computer, it does the memory check and when it comes to detecting the IDE drives, it restarts. This is repeated several times until it works. I wouldn't mind that too much, but
a) it worsenes continuously
b) sometimes the computer restarts while running normally without warning (not overheat related!)

The machine has an AMD K7 (700 MHz) CPU on a VIA Mainboard, BIOS has never been updated so far and I recently replaced the fan of the power unit, because it was dusted so heavily that it stuck and the power unit kept overheating, causing many emergency shutdowns...

Anyone got an idea what the source of this problem is and more important, how I can work around that without replacing the mainboard?

Hi!

I was just wondering why RawDraw is limited to 320x240 res, and whether there are any plans to change this...

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I give you... His infernal Majesty, the KNEVIL!!!

What do you think?

For those who wonder why I always post static images and no walkies: I haven't yet found time to learn animating with bones, but I sure will  ;D

Hey there!

I know that there are some advanced C++ Programmers out there, so I thought maybe one of you could help me with a little programming problem:
I have to do a team project "MP3 over Profibus" (Profibus is an industrial fieldbus system), which means that I have an MP3-Player application that decodes the MP3 into data that can be sent over Profibus to a microcontroller, which does the sound output over DAC.
I already have a Player that works over FMOD.dll coded in C++.

My idea is now, that I'd first try to write the uncompressed music data to a file, so that I have somthing to talk about with my team partner who is programming the microcontroller.
Now there's the problem: I'm rather new to C++ and it's quite hard for me to understand all the sample programs. I've already tried a few things but have failed so far...
Is there anyone out there who is familiar with FMOD and C++?

I've already posted this question on the FMOD-Forum, but that is little visited and so I thought it can't hurt to post it here either...

A big thanks to all of you who have even read so far ;) (and a bigger even to those who will reply)

Critics' Lounge / Sir Knubblival's new clothes
Mon 10/05/2004 20:44:24
Hi!

Some of you might remember the cute little "Knubbel"-guys I've posted before...
For those of you who don't: A Knubbel is basically a little green propeller aircraft with feet and huge eyes... (a cartoon figure invented by me)
And here comes Sir Knubblival, who is going to be the hero of my game!

Modified post:

In a crusader's armor: (Removed the small crosses)

In full tournament gear: (just made the BG gray)

Please take a special look at the crusader helm and tell me if you like it!

Is there a way to handle a global var which is used in the script in the interactions editor (conditional: If variable...) or the other way round?

and is there a direct way to check "Player has been in room" in script?

Advanced Technical Forum / RawDraw and Objects
Mon 16/02/2004 22:42:46
Hi!

Is it somehow possible to RawDraw over of Objects (without merging them)? Right now, the object stays on top of any lines or circles I draw...

Maybe I should describe better, in case you can help me work around that problem:

I am making a knight tournament game. One discipline is crossbow shooting from first person perspective. The flight path of the bolt is calculated in 3d coordinates and then projected on the screen.
My idea to check for a hit on the target was to make the target an object and check a GetObject when the bolt has reached the correct z-distance.
I tried with Regions earlier, but I want the target to be farther away from the player with every shot.

To give the player a clue where his bolts strike, the flight path is visualized by RawDrawCircles. As I said, they do not show where the object is, which is unfortunate, because the player cannot determine whether he has shot too far or too short.
(I have implemented a function that only draws Circles if the bolt is not behind the target, this works with regions)

hi!

What could be the reasons for a PlaySound() not working? The Sound exists as MP3, is in the correct folder, the Sound Volume is manually set to 100, the correct Sound Output device is selected, but still, it doesn't work. Why?
#14
Hi! I've been searching the web some time ago for such a tool, but I found no free tools for generating realistic 3d tree models.
It would be cool if the tool would spit out a file Cinema 4d can read (e.g. c4d, 3ds, dxf, wrl)
Alternatively I'd appreciate tips on how to do this manually with the least possible effort and most possible realism!

Hints & Tips / Quest for Orgy
Wed 04/02/2004 10:20:55
Da das Spiel in Deutsch ist, meine Anfrage auch auf Deutsch:

Wo zum Geier sind die Herztabletten?

Edit: Hab sie! Die sind ja winzig!

Edit2:
Here's it in English:

I asked where the heart tablets were, found them and edited my post complaining about them being so hard to find ;)

I thought it pretty pointless to post in English, since the game is exclusively in German... But anyway, now it should be readable for everyone...

P.S. That secret door is pretty hard to find, too ;)

Hi!

Anyone knows, how to run an old AGS game that has been compiled for windows under WIN2K?
Whenever I load one of these, the command window pops open, telling me twice "Cannot be run in DOS" or something and I get transported back to my desktop...

Hi! I'm trying to mix that potion from Ginger, Whiskey and Mushroom. I can't however add the mushroom.

Hi!

I'm still working on a tournament game. For the Swordfight discipline I thought I could use a FSM.
Basic Idea:
Two knights (Knubblival and Knubbelot aka VAL and LOT) are fencing (they're both left-handed).
Due to the anatomy of the characters (Knubbels; my personal comic figure), the knights begin facing each other nose to nose (state_parallel) where they can't hit each other; If one knight moves 45° to the left (input_val if it's VAL or input_lot if it's LOT)  he can hit the other (state_attacklot or state_attackval); if he moves another 45° to the left, or the other to the right (see above), then the opponent gets his shield in the way and can parry the strike.

Code (global script):
Quote
// main global script file
#define FSM_sword 1

#define state_parallel 1
#define state_attackval 2
#define state_parrylot 3
#define state_attacklot 4
#define state_parryval 5

#define input_val 1
#define input_lot 2

function game_start() {
 // called when the game starts, before the first room is loaded

//Nasen aneinander (nose to nose)
createFSMState(state_parallel, 2);
addFSMStateTransition(state_parallel,input_val,state_attackval);
addFSMStateTransition(state_parallel,input_lot,state_attacklot);
addFSMState(FSM_sword,state_parallel);

//Knubblival im Vorteil (advantage VAL)
createFSMState(state_attackval, 2);
addFSMStateTransition(state_attackval,input_val,state_parrylot);
addFSMStateTransition(state_attackval,input_lot,state_parallel);
addFSMState(FSM_sword,state_attackval);

//Knubbelot pariert (LOT parries)
createFSMState(state_parrylot, 1);
addFSMStateTransition(state_parrylot,input_lot,state_attackval);
addFSMState(FSM_sword,state_parrylot);

//Knubbelot im Vorteil (advantage LOT)
createFSMState(state_attacklot, 2);
addFSMStateTransition(state_attacklot,input_val,state_parallel);
addFSMStateTransition(state_attacklot,input_lot,state_parryval);
addFSMState(FSM_sword,state_attacklot);

//Knubblival pariert (VAL parries)
createFSMState(state_parryval, 1);
addFSMStateTransition(state_parryval,input_val,state_attacklot);
addFSMState(FSM_sword,state_parryval);

//Schwertkampf-Maschine (Swordfight-FSM)
createFSM(FSM_sword,state_parryval);

Display("Status: %d",getCurrentFSMState(FSM_sword));

}

function repeatedly_execute() {
 // put anything you want to happen every game cycle here
 int currentstate= getCurrentFSMState(FSM_sword);
 if (GetRoomProperty("Swordfight")){

   if (IsKeyPressed(375)) //Links oder defensiver Move von Lot (VAL left/LOT right)
   {if (currentstate != state_parrylot)
   Wait(15);
   doFSMStateTransition(FSM_sword, input_val);
   Display("Status: %d",currentstate);}

   if (IsKeyPressed(377)) //Rechts oder offensiver Move von Lot (VAL right/LOT left)
   {if (currentstate != state_parrylot)
   Wait(15);
   doFSMStateTransition(FSM_sword, input_lot);
   Display("Status: %d",currentstate);}
}

PROBLEM: As you may have noticed, that code shows the current state whenever I press one of the arrow keys. The output is always zero (except before the first transition, where it is 5 as it should be.)

If anyone wants to try it out, it works with a blank room that has the property "Swordfight" set to 1.

Please help, for I have NO idea what's wrong!

Hi,

I'm trying to make a small action sequence (jousting, actually), where the player has to aim a lance.
In a 'repeatedly execute' function, the position of the lance point is calculated according to the mouse coordinates, then a circle is RawDrawn at the point and a line from the lower right screen corner to the point. Works fine, so far.
The problem is, that I want to call a RawRestoreScreen() at the end of the function. Without a Wait() before, the screen stays blank(everything seems to be removed in the same instant it is drawn), with the Wait(), the screen flickers horribly.
Is there a way around that?

Hi guys!

I'm working on a game which features a knight tournament.
I want to make it absolutely clear, that the player character is the noble, modest good guy, and his adversary is a vain, arrogant sucker (but not evil, mind you).
Now, my question is, how to make him look real real vain?
He already has golden armor inlaid with silver and on his shield he bears a silver unicorn.

Oh, heck, I'll just post a pic for you.

For those not yet familiar with my characters: That's a Knubbel. Cute little green guy, shaped like a fat aeroplane with eyes and feet (here he uses his propellers to hold the sword).

EDIT: Yeah, that Unicorn (Knubblicorn) DOES have six feet... Dunno why... Thought it funny, maybe
