Well then, lets get started with a new competition.

2bit Gameboy Style

Now the rules are quite simple: Take a existing game you like (or just a character of said game), and convert it to an old school Gameboy game.

*Max dimensions: 160×144 (original Gameboy resolution)
*You'll have to use the 2bit colour scheme I've provided
*It has to be an existing game which wasn't released on the Gameboy
*Bonus points if you do a full 160x144 game mock-up.
*One entry per person, if you have multiple entries please specify which one you'll be using for the compo.

The colour scheme you'll have to use:

And, ofcourse, some trophies for those interested:

Good luck, and have fun.

Well, I've been thinking about this for a little while now. I'm trying to make something go from a random point A so that it will always hit point B in a straight line. It's actually harder then I originally thought (*raises fist* Damn you math!). For some reason I had no trouble implementing a sinus, but making a angled line is something that i can't wrap my head around.

I can make it go 'roughly' in the right direction with a bit of a simple hack, but like with the sinus movement I want a predictable, dead-on function. So if any of you have some wisdom to share on this matter, I would really appreciate it.

This is the current 'hack' version Do not mind to enormous amount of bullets you can fire, they're just there to proof different point.

Hey, I've been busy with a simple shooter concept as of late and have a question about the maximum number of objects one can use on a single screen. Well, I've run into this problem fairly quickly since every bullet I use on screen has to be it's own object. This including with the enemies I top the maximum objects very, very quickly.

Now, I could reuse the old objects and just designate a certain number row of objects to enemies, bullets and so on (e.g. object 10 to 19 for enemies, 20 to 29 for projectiles) and change their given appearance. But this is allot more fiddly and less readable then designate objects to a fixed object number.

So, is it possible to up the maximum? Or am I going to have it do the hard way  :'(

I've been fiddeling with the MUGEN engine again lately and thought it might make an appropriate Sprite Jam topic. We're all used to making rather stiff standing, talking or walking animation etc. for AGS. But fighter characters are a whole lot more dynamic in posture and body language. So I thought it would make a nice exercise regarding general anatomy.

RULES

1. Your character has to be ofcourse a fighter character. The character itself does not have to be original content, so if you want a kung-fu Le Chuck or a Sumo wrestling Ben it's all fine by me.

2. There is no limit on color or size of your character.

3. Any pose is allowed, a kick attack, special fireball thingy, devestating uppercut or simply an idle pose. Thats up to you.

4. Bonus points for good posture. Fighters in fighting games are all about attitude, so strike a pose.

As a bit of inspiration, this is the character I'm currently working on. A fighter based around the french fighting sport 'Savate'

*EDIT*
Here are some trophies for those interested.

Critics' Lounge / Need help drawing crystals

x1              x3

2 props I've drawn. They're supposed to be crystals sitting a on a shelf looking all shiny and pretty.

But as you can see the first one looks more like a bowling ball or a globe and the second one looks like a christmas tree. I've fiddeled around with these for a while now and I can't seem to figure out what makes a crystal look like a crystal.

This CB's topic is: Your own personal army

Use the given outlines to create your own army.  Infantry, tanks, fortresses or giant bomber thingies. Anything is allowed, and favorably something of a distopian future setting.
I've always been a sucker for the warhammer 40k series, so I thought I'de use a few shapes which you can use to create your own little army with.

RULES
Theme:          Create your own Army
Max colours:  unlimited
Max height:   unlimited
Max width:    unlimited
-Additional-
* The outlines may be mirrored and rotated in any way or form.
* The outlines may be copied.
* The outlines may be resized.
* The outlines may be altered, but still has to be recognisable. (the altering especially holds true for the smaller pieces to make them fit)
* Extra guns or other various potentialy lethal objects may be placed ontop of the outlines aswell. Aslong as the original shape is still clearly visible.
* Not all the outlines are required to be used.

Here is an simple example for creating a soldier and what is allowed:

The backpack and gun are added, and aslong as the additives don't become domaneering part of the picture, it's allowed.

As usual bonuspoints for creativity and originality. Also bonuspoints for the use of a background.

*edit*

And here are some rewards for showing off ;)

I don't know if this was already being brought to anyones attention (couldn't find it with the search function) but the 4th episode of sam and max is free and up for grabs.

It was quite short, but fun.

This CB's topic is: Spaceships!

Use the given outline to create your own spaceship. Will it be a spacestation, a cruiseship, a freighter, a star destroyer, a nimble fighter or something of a different nature? It doesn't matter aslong as it gives the impression it could be a form of transportation in space.
For example: it could be a gentle polka-dot giant space whale, hijacked  and enslaved by the savage 3 feet tall space pirates from planet Xiya. (it sounded funnier in my head)

RULES
Theme:          Has to be a form of space transportation
Max colours:  256
Max height:   200
Max width:    320
-Additional-
* The outline may be mirrored and rotated in way or form, but not scaled.
* The outline may be copied. Copies of the outline can be altered in any way and are not restricted as the original
* The outline may be altered, but still has to be recognisable. (You know what I mean ;))
* Additional items (wings, thrusters etc.) may be placed ontop of the outline aslong as the original shape is still clearly visible.

As usual bonuspoints for creativity and originality. Also bonuspoints for the use of a background.

WARNING: Big Picture Ahead !
Spacestation Promanade

You might recognise this bg from last year. Well I've started again with this little project, and I'm trying to bring this bg to a close.

The houses themselfs weren't a big problem (the lower section isn't colored yet btw), but I'm at a lost what to do with the floor, especially the lower sections since thats alot of empty space right there not being used.

Any and all suggestions are welcome for it.

When browsing a bit on flash movies I came across this guy. Even tho most of his work looks rather simple, the animations itself are rather good.

So, now it's up to me to think up a new contest.
Well then, how about this?

COLORS

Now I don't know if you guys are familiar with this game but for those who aren't:
I came acros this funny flashgame called artpad. It lets you draw an painting and afterwards you can replay it to see (for yourself or others) on how you actually drawed it.
It's great fun, or atleast I thought it was :)

I've been busy with this background lately.
It's supposed to be a promande deck from some rathole spacestation.

I was deciding how to implement some shading to make the picture less flat.
I tried a few things but none seemed to look right. Any Suggestions ?

Critics' Lounge / Once upon a sprite
Sun 15/08/2004 22:12:52
I've been busy with this sprite for a little while now and would like some C&C. It's not a sprite for ags, but another program wich lets you develop a oldschool fighting game. But then again, a sprite is a sprite right? :)

Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Ã,

Critics' Lounge / First Screen

I really should work more often on this game...

anywho: This is the first screen i`ve done for the game. It is made to be for a 320x240 256 color game. the screen itself is supposed to be a cartoon styled spacebar. The main drawings I did in paint, then did some stuff in photoshop to render it and add some effects if necessery. I`m not used to make backgrounds, and this is the first one i have ever done.
And now it is up for some C&C

The drawing done in paint

Some photoshop magic

With custom gui and main char (note that the barman and customers havent been implemented yet)

It seems I cant get the colors right with the main char. I`ve tried alot of different combo's but still cant find the right ones. This pic is the best one I've created sofar (atleast in my opinion).
(It's for a low res 320x240 256 color game)
