General Discussion / New Competition Idea...
Sun 11/12/2005 07:44:09
Okay, I've tried to come to up with several new competition ideas in the past and none of them have really caught anybody's attention but I recently came up with an interesting new idea.

This new idea came to me while I was buying some new screws for my car. I'd just baught 8 shiny screws and a quarter pint of flat black paint. I was trying to think of a way to paint the top of each screws without a paintbrush. Essentially, I had created a sort of simple logic puzzle: how would one go about painting 8 screws given a quarter pint of paint and only house-hold items (assuming a paintbrush is not one of them)? Many solutions came to my mind, but only one stood out to be the best. The first idea was to screw each screw into a cork and dip it into the paint, but this would require 8 corks (and I didn't have that many corks and chopping them up would require some effort). Then, I thought, maybe I should try aliminum. This would be good because I could form a base and set the screws down to dry after I was done dipping them into the paint. So this was my best idea and, to my avail, it was a success--the paint dried perfectly, covering only the top. But...

...how in the world does this apply to my competition? Well, the idea is quite similar. A logic puzzle is presented and the players must determine the best solution. The winning player determines the best (most beneficial and least item-requiring) solution. Here are the rules:

  • Upon the beginning of each round, the winner of the previous round instantiates:

    • A Feasible Logic Puzzle (must be realistic and solvable... ex: not associated with fictional elements such as ghosts, monsters, or fairy-tales and must require tool(s) to be solved)
    • A Single-Categorical List of Items (generally associated with one common place... a garage, house-hold, bedroom.. etc. but item names are still specified)
    • A Tested Sample Solution (to prove the validity of a given puzzle. Must be easily duplicable by all participants)Ã,

  • Each player then attempts to solve the logic puzzle and is voted for his/her:

    • Conservation of Given Items
    • Techniques Used (postives/negatives)

Granted, there's no such thing as a perfect solution but the point of the game isn't necessarily to find the perfect solution... just the best one you can think of. It's seems pretty simple and given the right logic puzzles, I really think this could be fun... especially for all you adventure gamers who love solving logic puzzles!

BTW, I tried to find the closest thing to this competition and here's what I found... http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=22085.0. At first, I thought my idea was taken, but then I realized this is not a "logic" puzzle and therefore its rules are flawed. It's just one guy giving a pointless puzzle that makes no sense. No solutions are logical and the entire thing is a mess. So, that idea didn't work. Here's proof:

I hereby declare the puzzle competition dead. It was only Eggie and Ginny who used to enter regularly, anyway....Ã,  Ã,

Did I stress the importance of "logic?" It's the only thing that keeps order in the competition!

So if you like this idea, please ask for a sample round and I will continue one on this thread. Otherwise, if you would like to request a meaningful, slight variation of these rules, please do so. If a sample round is requested, the previously stated rules may be pended with notification if one or more rules are subjected.

Advanced Technical Forum / Exporting Fonts...
Thu 10/11/2005 20:52:26
Sounds like a stupid and simple question but: can fonts be exported to SCI fonts in AGS? If so, how? Err... if not, how would I go about converting the AGSfont files to SCI font files?

I ask this because the Radiant Fonteditor cannot read my agsfont files. Therefore, they must be converted. And yes, they do work in AGS just fine.

In your own opinion, what are the funniest AGS games ever made?

Alright, here it is (please review thoroughly before responding to this thread):

The name of the game is "Adventure Game's Funniest Home-Impersonations." This is how it works: each month, an adventure game character will be presented (such as Vohaul from SQ, or Guybrush Threepwood from the MI series) Players who wish to participate attempt to do the best impersonation of that character. The players will also impersonate the role of an interviewer, which must ask a series of questions. In each competition, the winner of the previous competition (me to begin with) will have a variety of pre-selected questions and at least 5 of these questions must be used in the interview, such as "How are you today, <name>?" or "So tell me about your family...". In addition, the game character must include in his/her response a couple of pre-selected words, such as "Dirty Gym Socks", "Nasty pizza", or "Long Ugly Beard." (Yes, a little bazaar, but that's what makes it funny!) The sequence will be recorded into a WAV file, converted into an MP3, and sent to an online host provided by the player or myself (5 gigs available, so don't worry about space.) To prevent long-waiting periods, each MP3 will have a size limit of 3 MB (SO CONVERT IT TO MP3 WISELY IF IT IS LENGTYH!)Ã,  Finally, once all of the MP3s have been submitted and each player presents a link to his/her MP3 file, the audience will vote on the MP3 that they think was the funniest impersonation. The one that was the funniest will win the game. But remember, it's an impersonation, SO IT HAS TO SOUND A LITTLE LIKE THE GAME CHARACTER!Ã,  It won't be easy, but a lot of the competitions I've seen aren't!

How does that sound? No harsh comments, please! (Be a little nice in your response. If you don't agree with the idea, try to think about how it could be improved rather than why it is a flawed idea!) Thanks!

General Discussion / Idea for competition...
Sun 06/11/2005 00:58:19
I am seeking permission to initiate a new competition. Here's out it works: In order to play, you have to translate a comic, like the following one:

But, if it's your native language, or you've learned how to speak it, you can't play! (Sorry!) In addition, you cannot use translators to figure out the translation. And, you cannot seek the assistance of a friend who knows the language either! You must simply try to translate it as best as you can. The comic translation voted the funniest wins!

NOTE: In order to make the translation, you will need to either re-draw the comic, alter the comic, OR simply refer to the lines you are translating in chronological order.

Okay, I don't know if anybody here knows about this, but a company called Ageia, formerly responsible for making 3dfx cards, is currently working on technology that will revolutionize the world of gaming: physics cards. Now, before anyone has a fit ("Graphics and physics don't matter. It's the gameplay that counts!"), I would like you to consider what a physics card can do. If you think hard enough, you'd realize that a physics card can do a lot more than just blow up boxes and airplanes. A physics card can simulate a key unlocking a door, a hand picking up an object, a crowbar breaking into a car, and virtually just about anything possible. But what's the catch? We've obviously been able to do that in games before, right? Well, the difference is this: the physics card simulates a game's possiblities based on physical attributes of its objects, rather than its pre-scripted programming. That means you spend less time programming obvious outcomes, and more time working on aspects such as behavorial outcomes. Most of us may recall how Fate of Atlantis allowed Indy to take 3 seperate paths (fists, wits, or team up.) New physics card would allow adventure gaming to take place on a much higher level... where the possiblities are endless.

Now some of you may say, well... what if I didn't want a key to turn the door? What if I wanted that key to fly away? Easy. You would give the key attributes of a bird, for instance, and then you would determine its behavior as a bird-like object. Some of you may argue that the idea sounds far-fetched, and that the physics card alone will not offer such powerful features, but I can tell you this: in time, the physics card will offer adventure gamers just about everything they ever dreamed of. With the right software and a just little bit of creativity, anyone will be make take their dreams of the wildest adventures a possiblity. Thus, the physics card will revolutionize the world of adventure gaming.

Here are some demos which demonstrate the mere beginning of this physics card revolution:

Granted, some of you may not be impressed ("Bah. These physics suck,")Ã,  but I'm here to tell those of you that you should re-evaluate what you see in these demos. These simple demos are just the beginning... they are the product of a pre-Quake gfx card, so to speak. Today the demonstration of a simple plane crash, tomorrow the backbone of every great adventure game.

I recently considered the idea of having a webpage dedicated to creation... whether it be a game, a story, a design, or even just a thought... and I decided to make it a reality. It's called creativeefforts.com and it will offer a total of 1 GIG to all amateur artists... the good, the bad, and the ugly. Now, in order to make this happen: I just need someone's help to make a high quality webpage, because, as much as I'd like to do this myself, I have realized that I will not have time to do this anytime soon. I am already preoccupied with school, work, Utopia Prime, and, the assistance of a new game (Holiday.) I just need somebody's help in the beginning... they will get all the praise in the world when this site is up.

If you'd like to help, just send an email to:
y9k_compatible@hotmail.com

Your help will be MORE THAN GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks!

General Discussion / Returning to my game...
Thu 08/09/2005 02:00:26
Ã,  Ã, For a short time, I have deviated from finishing my game, Utopia Prime. Recently, I have decided to finish it, and with the Chris' new additions to AGS, I feel obligated. I have already done so much and I cannot just decide to stop working on it ... similar to training a character in an mmorpg. :P

Ã,  Ã,  If you are unfamiliar with the game lemme just briefly review it for you. You play this guy named Skylos Makali who works for a top secret organization called ISLAM (Investigators of Suspicious Lab Activities threatening Mankind). To determine the status of each lab, Dr. Makali is sent to observe all notable activities and generate a report based on his observations. If the report supports evidence that a lab is indeed threatening mankind, ISLAM has members in affiliation with military leaders who will send armed troops to this lab, forcing them to disengage their activities.Ã,  Anyway, the game starts out on a small island, where Makali enters a lab unlike any he's ever seen before. In it, he encounters a series of strange contraptions that he never could have possibly imagined. Upon finishing his own self-guided tour, he immediately concludes that the entire lab is abandoned ... or so he thinks.

Ã,  Ã,  I hope to share a demo with this community soon. If all goes well, one may be available before November. If you are interested in helping out (in maybe graphics *cough* *cough*), this would be nice, but by no means necessary. I am a busy person and so I rarely have time to work on this game, but when I find time, I use it to work on this game as much as possible. Graphics are always the most time consuming (which is why help would be nice), but the end product is always worth it. I always remind myself: Utopia Prime will be the next classic of postmodern adventure games. And I still believe it.

Advanced Technical Forum / Hotspot baseline?
Thu 24/03/2005 18:48:06
Is there a hotspot baseline? If so, how is it possible to change its position? If not, how would I manage to put a hotspot in front of an object? The object seems to replace the hotspot no matter what I try. Any ideas?

I don't know of any script that could change an object name. Any ideas?

Isotopic Arts proudly presents to you, the first adventure of a man whose life closely resembles that of Indiana Jones and James Bond â€" Skylos Makali in Utopia Prime.

Skylos Makali works for a top secret organization by the name of ISLAM (Investigators of Suspicious Lab Activities which may threaten Mankind.) In Makali's first adventure, ISLAM's radio contact has been lost with a team of scientific researchers experimenting with an artifical society known as "Utopia Prime". The experiment is located on anÃ, unidentified island somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. The Chief Administrator of ISLAM has assigned Makali to investigate all activities on the island in order to discover the reason behind their losing radio-contact and possibly, to uncover a magnificent secret hidden within the boundaries of the Utopia Prime experiment.

Here are some 320x200 (2X) screenshots that may hopefully interest you:

Screenshot 1 - ISOTOPIC ARTS

Screenshot 2 - TITLE SCREEN

Screenshot 3 - THE ENTRANCE

Screenshot 4 - INVENTORY SYSTEM

Everything is great so far but I need some help! Isotopic Arts has nobody! One person volunteered but has not responded in over 6 months. Now I need YOUR help to make this happen! Yes YOU! If you choose to help, you will have volunteered in one of the greatest adventure games made in AGS. It will feature dozens of rooms, puzzles, music, sound, animation, effects, YOU NAME IT! But if I don't have your help this may never happen! No matter what though, I can promise you this muchâ€" a demo will be released before the end of summer… at the very least. I've been working on this for over TWO years now, and if I get a team together this could be finished by the end of 2005!

What am I looking for? Somebody to:

1)   Make a webpage.

2)   Make the music.

3)   Help design all the cool puzzles.

4)   Contribute in any way possible.

AND JUST REMEMBER:

((Your Effort + My Effort)/ Total Amount of Effort Necessary for Completion)*100=Completion Percentage

THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF AN EFFORT AND I DON'T WANT THAT EFFORT TO COME 100% FROM ME BECAUSE THIS COULD BE HELLA FUN TO MAKE AS A TEAM! ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS-A-BILLION!

Advanced Technical Forum / Two issues...
Sun 12/12/2004 10:31:59
I recently came upon two issues that I thought were simple but ended up being (oh hey larry vales smiley... lol... sorry... get distracted easily)...Ã,  anyway, it ended up being a wee bit harder than I expected. So, to make a long story short, here's the problem I found out in the end:

How do I convert strings to characters?... in AGS, that is, because I know how to anywhere else, lol

AND

How do make the speech text ALWAYS appear in front? It doesn't appear in front when there is a GUI blocking it.

BTW, the reason I wanted to convert characters to strings is so I could capitalize the first letter of any string. Why? Well, because I feel is important knowledge (plus it'll clean up my game a bit)...

Any input would be really cool.... thanks!
