OK, I made this character in one quick session a while back and was surprised at how well it turned out (it was supposed to be just a concept). So I decided to use this as a ground to make a (sideways) walk animation on, which is something I've always had just too much trouble with. I drew it pretty freehand, but hopefully it's not too obvious, or at least too disturbing.

So, the character is just black (with a gray outline to stand out from the backgrounds). I was surprised at how hard it eventually turned out to draw it when the closer leg is swinging forward. But when I checked it out on AGS I thought it was quite OK. At least on the feet, there's a couple things still funny with the coat, it's doing a bit of over-exaggerated flapping, but I wasn't able to fix it. I would probably have to redraw all the coats.

But as I mentioned I checked it out on AGS, so I don't have any programs to convert it into an animation. But maybe someone more capable can do that, as I suspect it gives a better view of things...

As I seriously dislike doing walking animations, I'll probably try to manage with just the side views, if that's possible... (If I even use this, as I haven't yet even checked what it actually looks like in different resolutions (and I haven't even completely decided what resolution to use  :P)

(Edit): OK, here's just the new walking animation:

What do you do after you have the "big idea" to your game and you need to start creating the "game itself". Do you then start developing the story or backgrounds or certain puzzles you want to have in the game or what? And how do you go on from there? You can go in as deep as you want, just tell something...

Also, when you're developing the story, do you, after having the main plot, start deepening it step-by-step, or make the thing ready the first time, with all the discussions and all.

I hope I'm making any sense here...Ã,  :P

So what AGS games actually have voice packs? I haven't heard speech in any one of the ones I've played... Doesn't any of them have speech or is it just me...?

Critics' Lounge / First character
Sun 22/08/2004 11:46:47
Well, I've finally finished my first character. I did it in paint and I didn't have much time to work on it, so it took me quite a lot of time. I also couldn't get it as a png, so it's just a bmp, sorry 'bout that to those who care. But anyways, it's here: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Kopio_Char..bmp

So, what do you think?

P.S. Paintovers (and such) are more than welcome ;)

I've downloaded a GUI (of BASS if you must know), but after unzipping it and trying to import it to a game, I don't see the files on the list. What could be the problem? :-\

Critics' Lounge / How's the perspective?
Thu 29/07/2004 13:31:12
I have this unfinished pic of a hallway, but I need the opinions of the perspective on this. So don't start saying anything about details, or how empty the room is, it's not yet finished. I just want to know about the perspective.

As I guess I've made my point clear, the pic is here: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Main_hllway.bmp

Critics' Lounge / A Character
Mon 26/07/2004 17:50:36
Here's a character I made with the regular Paint. I haven't yet edited it in any ways (like resized it or something).

So what do you think?: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Char..bmp

OK, here's a bit bigger pic (though not as sharp): http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Char._Larger_ed..bmp

Can it be too detailed?

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong category...

I've downloaded several of the games created with ags, but I can't hear any music in it. At first I couldn't even get sounds, but then I canged the "MIDI Music" in the settings into Win32 MIDI Mapper, so now I get all the other sounds, but still I don't get music. Whenever I open a game, it brings this error message: "Unable to initialize your audio hardware. [Problem: Failed to init digital sound driver]"... I've tried to change the "Digital Sound" into "Default WaveOut Device", but that just made the effects worse...

I can't find this in any faqs, so could anybody help?

(Edit): Hmm... Now I tried Ben Jordan 1 again, this time with the "MIDI Music" as "Default MCI Music Device", and  "Digital Sound" as "Default Waveout Service", and well, at least I got some music, but it (as all other sounds) were very poor quality... Then I tried with the "Digit. Sound" still the same and "MIDI Music" again as "Win32 MIDI Mapper", but now I didn't get any sounds...  :P :-\
