Are videos supposed to work in the Linux port yet? I've seen some mentions of it using gstreamer when doing a cursory search but I can't even see MPEG-1 videos even though I have all the gstreamer plugins installed. Is it looking for some specific version maybe?

Dualnames' game Until I Have You has a parallax scrolling effect which is according to him is implemented using a trivial module, but the effect doesn't work in any Linux binaries of AGS I've tried, including a binary I freshly compiled myself from the current revision of the git repo and binaries pulled from The Cat Lady and A Golden Wake. Any insights?

Sounds pretty damn neat, yeah? Anyone thinking of participating?

Seeing as cool projects on Kickstarter appear all the time, I thought it'd be neat to have one thread for all interesting kickstarters we spot. Both so they're all together and that no one has to hesitate and ponder starting a thread just to share one. (But not to discourage actual authors from starting threads about their campaigns if they want) If you don't think it's a such a good idea, well then may the mods just rename this thread into Her Majesty's SPIFFING kickstarter because that's what I wanted to share right now anyway.

So, uh, yeah, Her Majesty's SPIFFING Kickstarter. I found the humour in the pitch video very charming, and having another cute 3D adventure game can't hurt I reckon. Thoughts?

General Discussion / backloggery.com

Seeing as there are many people here who are really into games, often to an impressive extent (Name the Game players, I'm looking at you :-* ), I thought it'd be appropriate to share this lovely site with you. The Backloggery is a site that lets you maintain a simple yet effective database of your game collection with a focus on keeping track on how much progress you've made in the games and encouraging you to finish as many of them as possible.

I've been using it over a year now and I'm very happy with it. You can check out my profile if you want. Personally I'm not that much of a completionist but as a person who is always in never-ending search for interesting games I found it really suitable for keeping track of all the games I meant to check out, properly play and/or actually finish. And well, leaving mini-reviews and rating games is also nice. As is obsessively updating it every 5 seconds with every tiniest detail of your progress. Ratings are useful even when they're absent, as if the game isn't rated yet, I know I haven't played it enough. It's also nice in the sense now if somebody asks me for game recommendations, I can just be a lazy bastard and link them to the games rated 5 and 4 stars on my backloggery. Although, right now the games I have there are only my actual lifelong backlog and the stuff I finished from it during that year. But if I ever make it through a critical portion of my backlog I'll sure enjoy inputting all the games I have ever finished in there. Yes, I'm a sad person!

So yeah, I'd be happy to hear what people think about it. If somebody decides to register, please do link your profiles so I can hurt your feelings by not deeming you worthy of adding. :)

Just a reminder that we have an active friendly IRC chatroom called Club Galen going on.

It's #clubgalen on irc.clubgalen.com, port 6667.

You can join using any IRC client of your liking or if you can't be bothered to have any, just click here and join using your browser.

Here's an irc:// link if you want one: irc://irc.clubgalen.com:6667/clubgalen

If you want to read about our silly shenanigans you can check out the Club Galen wiki.

Lastly, BrutalSlakt wrote this tutorial that shows how to use mIRC to join our channel.

At 5:09 mark of the latest episode of Zero Punctuation Yahtzee is seen holding a blue cup not unlike the logo of our dear game engine. Is it an intentional reference? Is it a divine sign? It is a conspiracy? Let's speculate!

Spoiler
Personally I think it's a playful reference intentionally meant to trick AGSers into thinking it's meaningful when it's actually not. But it could be a subtle Valve-style reference to him working on another AGS game. And of course it's still likely to be completely unintentional altogether.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Memoria
Fri 30/08/2013 21:39:36
You know, it kinda goes without saying, since it was developed by Daedalic but... damn. Boy, is Memoria good. It's absolutely sublime. It's superb at telling its story in tasteful intriguing ways and at being an adventure game with smart interesting enjoyable puzzles. It surpases its prequel Chains of Satinav as well as  many other adventure games I've played lately. In fact it holds the standard so high up, many classics may start shying away. An absolute must play I'd say. And even though it's better so far, I'd certainly say having played Chains of Satinav before enhances the experience a lot. For one, Geron's quest as well as Geron himself are much more relatable after that whole adventure.

You can grab a copy on Steam here here, and in case you're even remotely concerned about playing good adventure games I strongly recommend doing so sooner or later.

In casual communication I employ a consistent mix of American and British English spellings, accordingly to my personal preferences. E.g. I definitely prefer realize, randomize, fantasize to realise, randomise, fantasise, as much as I definitely prefer armour, humour, honour to armor, humor, honor. Naturally, I'd like to carry on writing like that in games I make, but since I take it very seriously as any other aspect of game development, I have to consider if this is an issue or not.

I surely understand it can be viewed as unprofessional, but I wonder if that would matter any beyond that. Would you as the player be bothered by it? Is that a big deal? What would be your advice? Should I just carry on merrily with my mixed spelling style or choose one spelling system per game and stick to it in game writing?

General Discussion / Shadowrun Returns
Sun 28/07/2013 16:32:27
I've seen quite a few AGSers play it on Steam, so... thoughts?

Personally, I'm enjoying it very much. It's very easy-going. The cyberpunk atmosphere is lovely. I really appreciate the characterization. The characters are well-written and fleshed out, a refreshing change from... many other games that lack that. The story could use more brilliance, irony and open-mindedness, but it's truly far from dumb, which is also quite refreshing.

Also I really like the story-driven focus and relatively rare in-place turn-based combat. I really wanted to make something like that/see that made. The moderate amount of combat encounters made me appreciate it more than when it happens all the time. And I think it's really appropriate for turn-based combat, to have it accordingly to quality over quantity rule.

And the graphics and the music serve their purpose really well. Not a fan of isometric graphics and I wouldn't nominate it for my favourite soundtrack, but it all puts me in the right mood just wonderfully.

So, haven't beaten it yet, but so far playing it has been a breeze.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Unknown Lands

Unknown Lands

Dear AGSers, I'd like to present you a short experimental game I made this spring. It's called Unknown Lands and it tells about the adventures of captain Cassandra Sway who's lost everything in a blink of an eye and found herself alone on a piece of land completely strange and unfamiliar to her.

What happened to her next and in what order is very much up to chance and your choices.

Unknown Lands has a deliberately misleading structure for a short narrative-focused game, it's not linear and it doesn't have an overarching goal, and the main storyline isn't prominent or important at all. The game leaves you to explore the island/continent Cassandra is on and deal with the encounters she experiences by making choices. It's all about having your own adventure in a strange land.

The game has an end and can be finished though. The whole territory is divided in 4 types: water, forest, towns and hills&fields. Once you exhaust all encounters in each area, the game is finished.

The game is controlled with WASD for movement and menu selection and space for confirming choices.

You can download the game on the website of my indie game development team, Lazy & Sleepy:

Some extra notes

I must say, I'm somewhat disappointed with the way it turned out. It doesn't quite have the effect I had in mind. And I ran out of energy before I could add certain features I planned. But as with any interesting experiment I certainly don't regret making it. Furthemore, the friends and pals I've shown the game to have been pretty much universally positive about it and said they have enjoyed the game. Funnily enough, many of the suggestions I've heard from them were amongst the features I originally envisioned but didn't have the juice to add in the end. And I think at this point I know how I would 'fix' this game to get closer to the feel I wanted it to have, but right now I'm simply too busy with much more exciting projects, so this game will have to stay this way for a while. Maybe later when I'm really in the mood for it, I'll return once more and enhance this little thing. But for now, I need to focus on more important games. I do hope you enjoy it for what it is and I anticipate hearing what you guys think.

Known issues:
· both fullscreen and windowed display resolution is limited to 800x600; I'm definitely gonna offer more options at some later point
· no saving / loading; probably not a huge deal for that game, since you can beat it in half an hour but still, I believe it must be a common courtesy
· the fonts could be more smooth
· the graphics are hardly perfect; I'm very much content with that it's a graphical map of the world rather than an isometric picture of it and I even like the current tiles, but if anyone feels like making an alternative tileset, just let me know
· there are typos, grammatical errors and other unnatural transgressions wreaked upon the English language. You bet there are! don't just giggle at them alone, report them so we can all giggle together and fix them.

Last, but no least, I'd like to thank Pablo for playtesting and clever suggestions, as well as everyone who originally took their time to check out the version 1.00.

When I played the games from the latest OROW I was surprised by how many satisfying and fun games there were. Thus I implore you all, play them too and then vote, my dearest respected fellows! Hopefully the epic trailer above will provide a decent incentive for doing so!

Ladies and gentlemen, I'd like to ask you to help a fellow indie developer to get a better idea of what resolutions are actually available to people out there so I can be prepared to handle them better. You may easily do so by running a simple program I wrote that lists available resolutions which can be downloaded from this link http://lazyandsleepy.org/listres.exe. It outputs the list into a file named listres.txt in the same directory as the program itself. I'd like you to post its contents to something like http://pastebin.com/ and post the link here or send it to my email (in my profile) if you're shy or get it to me in any other way you like. You may also use any other method of gathering all of your available resolutions but I'd be very grateful if it's at least as complete and detailed as my program's output.

Any additional notes that you may provide on how you use your resolutions are very welcome.

Thank you.

I'd like to ask you, wise AGS folks, the following question: would it be illegal to recreate a scene from a movie in a miniature scene (made out of physical materials and figurines) and sell it, without explicit consent of the movie creators?
If so, are there good ways to escape illegalness, for example by omitting names and altering copyrightable elements without ruining the whole purpose of the idea and thus its potential appeal?

All input on this is very appreciated!

Dear friends! I'm pleasured to show you my humble work: full BaSS soundtrack in MIDI. Enjoy!

http://adventures.bestmusicpages.com/BaSS.zip

I hope I'll do version without delays in the beginning of each track soon.
Also someone promised me recording these MIDIs on good hardware, so you probably can get audio tracks.
If them're done, I'll post links here.

Sorry for your waiting.
Here's the picture from BaSS comic, enjoy captioning.  :)

Maybe it's too easy but I didn't find anything better yet. Great game BTW.
