Thought this might be of interest who wants a legit free copy of Photoshop - it's a few years old but it still does the trick nicely.

Adobe giving away Creative Suite 2 for free.

Full disclaimer: I haven't actually been able to get it myself yet - looks like they're having a bit of a site overload right now - but I've seen enough happy commenters to verify it. You need a (free) Adobe account to get it, so get going! Enjoy!

EDIT: If you're having difficulty accessing the site, some kind soul has offered direct links to the software, as well as the serial keys (seem to be the same keys for everyone), here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/adobe-cs2-creative-suite-free-1437132

Hello friends!

I'm looking to fund my new animation series on Indiegogo (yes, another one of those) and I was hoping to look to the great AGS community for support!

Announcing...THE BRAVE AND HANDSOME SQUAD:

OH MY GOODNESS LOOK AT IT HERE!!!

Even if you can't contribute, any help is appreciated - tell your friends, your family, your WORST NEMESIS, and I'll make it up to you someday, maybe!

Thanks for listening, fellas and fella-ettes.

Completed Game Announcements / The Lighthouse
Thu 02/08/2012 16:35:47
After 8 or 9 years as a member of the AGS community...I have finally made a (quite short) game!

THE LIGHTHOUSE

A young girl and her father live on a lonely island in the north of Scotland, where they manage the lighthouse for adventurous sea travellers.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE!

Like I said, this is my first 'proper' game, so go easy on me! I tested as much as I could, but let me know if you find any problems.

Thanks fellas, and happy playing! Lemme know what you think. :)

UPDATE: fixed some small bugs because Matt is the bestest.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Not really much more to say about it. It's not top of my list of things that need a re-release, but there you go.

The article also says:

QuoteIn addition to the remake, the studio is also working directly with series creator Al Lowe, who has given his blessing to the project.  Replay Games and Lowe have plans for brand new Larry adventures scheduled for early 2012 to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary.

An unusual choice, seeing how critically panned recent entries in the series have been, but I thought some people might be interested...!

Your car has broken down on the highway, at least 100 miles from the nearest town. There is a payphone next to you, and there appears to be a wooden shack by the roadside in the distance.

You are currently carrying: your wallet, a mobile phone (with no signal available), chewing gum, car key.

What do you do?

General Discussion / Looking for Guest Comics!
Mon 30/05/2011 13:00:41
Hey guys and guy-ettes.

I just announced that my webcomic, Perpendicular Universe is looking for some guest comics that I can throw up while I'm away, and I thought I'd highlight it here for all you crazy creative types!

Full details here!

Think of it as an opportunity to get some work out there outside your comfort zone - and if yours goes up, I will of course advertise your game/comic/tree surgeon business along with it!

Looking forward to what people come up with...!

A couple of people have already said they are DEFINITELY 100% FOR SURE doing one, but the more the merrier!

Hey fellas,

My webcomic has been getting some pretty okay traffic recently, sort of, ish, so I am looking at the only thing any rational human being could do: sell out.

I have a store on there currently, but as I am poor my merchandise options are limited - I can't afford to get the initial stock made for items I would like.

As such I have been looking at 'print-on'demand' services - mostly CafePress - to see if I could get some t-shirts printed up. I have a few designs ready to do, and would really like to get them out there.

I have sold a couple of designs to a t-shirt retailer online, but lose the rights to the design, etc, so thought it would be better to do it all myself. My question is: how do people feel about these types of services (specifically Cafepress)? Do we like the quality of the products? Have these stores worked out for people? Would you buy from a store like this, or would you be put off by it being a print on demand shop? WILL YOU BUY MY THINGS?

Any help is appreciated, AGS community.

General Discussion / Other Creative Outlets

It has occured to me lately that some people actually have an active life beyond AGS.

I know several of you have webcomics, art blogs, and other endeavours outside making adventure games. Only recently have I discovered some of them.

BASICALLY: I want to know what they are. For example, I have a webcomic!

Please, feel free to show what else you're up to here! Think of it as free advertising, as I will check it out.

General Discussion / Wireless type problems
Sun 03/08/2008 11:16:40
Hi!

I've been having a problem with my interwebs and I was hoping you guys (especially the ones who are smarter than me) could help? Pretty please?

I share a flat with 2 peeps so we have a wireless router that we all use (a Belkin if that's at all important.)

For me, it works fine, I can access any website I want, download stuff, run all programs, etc etc.

For them, it is not so simple. They can access most sites, but not others. Notable examples include Myspace, Hotmail, 110mb.com (where my website is hosted, which they can't access) among others. Also, they can't use MSN or P2P type stuff.

I haven't the foggiest what the problem could be as I am not educated in the slightest in these matters. I wouldn't know if I have to open any ports or change settings or anything. Also I should note my flatmates are using Vista while I'm still on XP.

Any ideas? Cheers.

No, seriously!

http://www.gametap.com/home/play/gameDetails/000475950

I have never played it before so I'm gonna give it a shot. Not far enough into the service to find any catches and the like, but it looks alright!

EDIT: Looks like it's one of the few games that isn't available in Europe. Dang :(

I am currently replaying Grim Fandango, and loving it, it's been too long sicne I let Manny into my life.

While clicking around on the net and generally researching it for my own amusement, I came across this:

http://www.grimfandango.net/?page=soundtrack

I did not know this was available and thought some people here might like it, having heard the soundtrack praised quite a bit. Sorry if this is old news to you, but I was happy to find it!

Hey, I'm fairly unexperienced when it comes to Photoshop, so I was wondering if you guys could help (you all come with such high recommendations from other people who have needed help in the past of course...):

I'm using the Ellipse tool, & I want to change the thickness of the outline (it appears to be just one pixel as it is), the help file says something about a "weight" option, but I can't see it anywhere....anyone care to tell me what to do please?

I'm using PS 7, if that makes much difference.

Thanks in advance.

For my current Art & Design course, I need to use as many different types of medium as I can to get a good mark. Before this year, I was only really used to pencils, paints & cahlk/charcoal, to some extent, so I have been advised to give pastels a shot. Here's my first attempt at using them:

Took me about an hour, did that.

It's hard to scan, in that it doesn't look exactly like it does in life, but that can't be helped.

What I want to know is: Am I heading in the right direction here?

I know there are a couple of problems with the shape of the bottle, the neck is too short & it's not quite symmetrical, but what I would really like crits on is how I can improve future pastel sketches - I hope to have another shot tomorrow. Please, tear this apart, I want to get better at it. I am of course going to talk to my teacher about it, but it's always nice to have different people's opinions on different techniques.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Scroll down for my second attempt using pastels.

Some of you remember the Crimson room - a short flash game from a while back.

Well, here is it's sequel:

The Viridian room

I haven't finished it yet, but I've gotten pretty far (I think). I'll try my best to help out if you're stuck, but I'm hoping someone smarter than me can finish it....

Right, it seems people have been discussing a lot of ideas here lately(see here & here), so I thought I'd express an idea that I've had for a while....

Basically, it involves the plot of an adventure game developing depending on HOW the player acts up 'til that point.

Let me explain (I don't have a lot of AGS scripting experience - or any scripting experience at all - so I don't know if this is possible yet, but bear with me):

Say your main character is talking to another character, & he has two dialogue options:

Option 1: "Hello, Steve, how are you today?"

Option 2: "Oh crap, I was hoping I wouldn't see you today"

You see? Quite a contrast.

Now, let's say the game has a sort of hidden built in variable (let's call it 'x'). And, for arguments sake, at the start of hte game x = 50.

If you were to choose to say option 1, that would add a few points on to x, thus making x higher than 50.

If you were to choose to say option 2, that would take a few points off x, thus making x lower than 50.

As you can see, x is defined by how the player treats other characters in the game (& could also be applied to how he/she interqacts with the environment & tries to solve puzzles). This could lead to some interesting situations later in the game - if x is WELL over 50, it means that the player has been a 'good boy/girl' throughout the game, & so the plot will reflect this, making it pretty non-linear. Obviously, if x less than 50, then the player will be more inclined towards the 'evil' end of the spectrum.

Example:

At the end of the game, the badguy is running away from his hideout, the goodguy spots him & starts chasing. Eventually, he corners him. At this point, two things can occur:

(x > 50) - He arrests the badguy & is hailed as a hero. He gets the girl (or whatever) & lives happily ever after.

(x < 50) - He shoots the badguy & gets arrested fr murder.

Obviously, given time, the game makers could come up with much greater ideas than this - after all, this is only an example.

It could also work for other things - is the player happy/angry, clever/stupid, gay/straight?

I think, if done correctly, this idea could be implemented so the entire plot is developed in the same manner, & the game would be non-linear. Players would want to play through your game several times to try & be a better/worse person, or whatever. Obviously it would take a lot of scripting work, but I would still be interested to see if it would work.

So, what do you think? Thought, anyone? Is this possible? More importantly, is it plausible?

Hints & Tips / Fatman points Question
Sat 21/02/2004 18:13:02
I finished Fatman with 102/103 points (much to my frustration).

Is there any advantages to getting all 103? An extra cutscene or something? If so, could someone please tell me what happens?

Thanks.

Click. Read to the bottom. Enjoy.

Well, it made me laugh, at least.

EDIT: Erm, this one doesn't work anymore. Scroll down to OTG's post. Please.

Hey, turns out I can log in at my grans....

Anyway, just thought I'd tell you about another feature about AGS. In Britain, the first issue of a magazine called 'Gamemaker' just came out, with a four page tutorial on AGS! Not only that, AGS was even featured on the cover disk, which I think is a first!

It's a pretty good tutorial, teaching only the basics, but you might wanna check it out. Pleughberg gets a small mention, as does Yahtzee's Odysseus Kent. I don't have a scanner - would somebody mind scanning it for everyone?

The whole Mappomedia thing is over. You'll have noticed the locked thread.

I'd just like to clear a few things up, if I may:

1) The first Mr Jack was a completely new member, I believe. Look at the time of each post and you will see that it would be practically impossible for DG to do both member's posts.

2) Mr Jack and the CEO are probably two different people, and they are probably just friends or something who thought it would be funny to argue on our forums.

3) THE BIG ONE - You may notice towards the end that a new Mr Jack & CEO entered the field. Sorry to spoil the surprise, but this was not m0ds, it was FruitTree. He even admitted it on IRC. Just like to clear that up.

And so ends the biggest event in the past few AGS months, weeks, days.

Also, Minimi, try not to take things so seriously. No-one else did :P

EDIT: Damn, FruitTree posted two seconds before me. Sorry. Close this if you want.
