Hi folks!
I hope you can help me out with a little problem. I have been searching for the lyrics of the "Asterix in Britain" movie title theme for days, unfortunately to no avail. The song is basically the same as "Astérix est là ", but it has this fancy Beatles-style arrangement and a different text.

Now - we'd love to play this song in our band, but as a foreign listener I have not been able to work out the lyrics on my own. I guess the singer has some sort of British accent (I heard they hired a Beatles cover band for that one), so I thought some of you could help me on my way to finding the lyrics.
Hey, it will be FUN and all! :D

Here's what I've got so far, mostly for your amusement and to show that I have invested at least some work myself:

---

The lookout is out
let out of it, shout, maybe we're all at tea (?)
there's room for more
the room is [...], it just won't work with me
it's a-mission time (we'll talk about it later)
while I play [...] (just sit back)
watch the story [...] (we've all been told to go now)
so the ticket back is blackjack

It's anybodys deal, lets try a new reel
and maybe something I've gonna [...]
the [...] is now on you, lets try something new
and maybe someone can turn a new wheel

the lookout is out
let out of it, shout, maybe we're all at tea (??)
fade out on the moon
its a-soon to tell, it just won't work with me
expedition time (we'll take [...])
try another line (it's allright)
seek a different [...] (we'll sing a song about it)
things will be just fine, there's no fight <-- that one might be correct :)

It's anybody's deal, let's see how you feel
and maybe something, I've [...]
the [...] is now on you, let's try something new
and maybe someone can turn a new wheel

----

I'm not too pleased with myself, honestly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi fellow artists,

my younger brother spends a lot of his time drawing comic characters and as far as I can tell he has become pretty good at it (though I might be just a little bit biased). Whenever he comes to me with another work done, I usually go like "Hey, that's even better than the last one. You should really show that to somebody who knows this stuff."

As this is not exactly adventure-related, (though I would love to hire him as my art director), I thought I'd ask if anyone of you knows some kind of community that would allow him to upload his stuff to get some opinions and criticism. I know about deviantart.com, but when I browsed the site I felt a bit lost, as it covers such a broad range of works.

So - any ideas?

Hi everybody,
after some time of not working on my game, I got an error message when I tried to test the game, so I updated from 2.56 to 2.62, but still this message occurs when I try to test the game or start the .exe file in the compiled folder:

An exception 0x0000005 occured in ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0x004ACC3A; program pointer is -182, ACI version 2.62.772, gtags(0,0)

I have a feeling this could be related to my new soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile 2496), which does not have a MIDI device.
Oh, and since christmas I have a new CD-ROM/DVD drive. I can't think of any reason why it could interfere with AGS though.

Any ideas?

General Discussion / Help me find a song
Sun 10/10/2004 19:46:41
Hi there,
I'm on a desperate search for the name of a song that has been haunting me for ages. It's quite popular - it is played as the intro song of a show on tv every now and then - but I could never find out what the name of the song is or who wrote/played it.

In an attempt to bring this to an end,Ã,  I've thrown together a little midi file for you to listen to. Maybe that there's someone out there who knows it and can tell me what it's called.

It's made by ear without any reference and I had to cut it down to 37 secs, but the important parts are there. I'm not sure if the ending is original, they've played it like that in the tv show I was talking about. Maybe they only wanted to bring it to a quick end.Ã,  :)

Anyway, does it ring a bell for someone?

General Discussion / Looking for an old game
Sun 28/03/2004 20:41:04
Hi there!

I had completely forgotten about this for years, but suddenly it came back into my head and won't leave:

Years ago, I went to the library and found a book about computer games and cheats, and there was one page about a small game, in which you play a little mechanic who is to keep a machine running that produces toy robots. The machine was pretty large and scrolling, and apparently you had to get to the right spot and somehow fix broken things.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Ever since that day, I wanted to play this game, but I forgot the name and have never seen it in action.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Hi there!

A friend of mine has quite an old computer which he uses only rarely, so I gave him a copy of my Windows 98 CD, which is also installed on my computer.
He has experienced some problems though, especially concerning Outlook Express, so I wonder if it is safe for him to run Windows Update, as I have already done so on this Computer. Will Microsoft recognize that the same Windows 98 version is installed on two PCs? Would there be any problems arising from this?

Or would they know but care little, as they have even announced to stop support for Win98 and most people already laugh at me for still using it.  :)

So I stumbled upon a copy of Silver Games 1, which I had bought in a bundle with Gold Games 2 some years ago and saw there was an adventure game on one of the disks: Bazooka Sue. (1997) It said it was similar to the classic LucasArts adventures, so I gave it a try.

And I was heavily disappointed.

This game has got really beautiful backgrounds. The characters are nicely animated, but the gameplay is terrible. Take this dialogue: (I had to take one from the very beginning, because I didn't play more than three screens)

- May I have your newspaper?
- And what do I get in return?
- Erm, a thankyou?
- Pah, you've got to bring me something better.

Is there anything that hasn't been done wrong here? There's no reason why I would want that newspaper. There's no reason why he wants to keep it, it just lies around there. This is going to be a give X to Y puzzle, without any motivation. The text reads as if a 14-year old had written it. A dumb one. Just in puberty.

I wonder how they convinced their artists to work for them, really. If you ripped the backgrounds and gave them to a randomly chosen member of this community, he would most probably make a better game out of them.

I'm not really frustrated, I mean - I practically got it for free, I'm just shocked that something like that has been sold for money. And that it has been rated 75% by PC Action and 81% by PC something.

Any opinions on this one?

Well, there are lots of topics here referring to 'walking deads' - situations that make it impossible to successfully complete a game.

Question: Aren't that 'dead ends'? I remember the 'walking dead' being another word for zombies.

You, know there was this rather embarrassing situation on IRC, when people laughed at me for stating I was stuck in a walking dead, which actually is quite a funny image.

Or is this some kind of running gag?

Just a small question about a big download:

Has anyone tried the new OpenOffice 1.1? It is said to have some cool new features, such as the ability to write PDF files directly to the hard disk. However - StarOffice 5.2, which is installed on this PC (Pentium II, 350 MHz) already runs rather slowly - does OpenOffice feature a better performance?

In short: Is it worth switching? Any opinions?

Thanks in advance,
Thunder

As there seem to be quite a lot of people here who really know their stuff when it comes to computer problems, I thought someone could help me out with this one:

Internet is used by a family PC (Pentium II, 350 MHz)running Win98, four different users are set up, so the select-user-and-enter-password-listbox is shown after starting.

Now here's the problem:
Each of us used to use Internet Explorer 6 for browsing, but suddenly I seem to be the only one whose Internet Explorer seems to work correctly, which is rather strange, concerning that IE was installed only once and linked to for all users.

Now what does happen?
As I said, my IE works just fine. For all the other users, it doesn't seem to follow links anymore.

Example:
enter www.google.com -> Google site is loaded
enter a search keyword, press 'search' -> nothing happens

enter www.amazon.com -> amazon zite is loaded
click on 'books' -> nothing happens

Internet connection is established, as the sites aren't loaded from cache but from the proper location.

Does anyone know this problem? It's driving me crazy.
Oh, by the way - I use crazy browser, which basically is an add-on to IE, but the plain Internet Explorer works just as fine for me.

Alright, here is a small problem with the script editor that sometimes drives me crazy:

If a string contains the cloing brace '}', the script editor seems to take it as the end of the function and hides everything that is written after it if it's called from the interaction editor.

For example, take the following script for 'look at hotspot':

MoveCharacterToHotspot(EGO,1);
DisplaySpeech(EGO,"I am displaying {these} braces");
DisplaySpeech(EGO,"And I'm talking on and on.");

The next time the 'run script' interaction is double-clicked in the interaction editor, the script editor only displays:

MoveCharacterToHotspot(EGO,1);
DisplaySpeech(EGO,"I am displaying {these

This example looks rather weird, but I have replaced the SCI code for the closing brace with the special character "ü", which I use more frequently.

Is there any chance this could be fixed?

Alright, there's something strange happening in my game:

I have completely replaced the on_mouse_click function to adapt it to my verb-coin interface, but internally the cursor mode is permanently MODE_LOOK. Right-clicking on a hotspot, character or object should only bring up the verb coin GUI, consisting of three buttons. Clicking on a button triggers the corresponding talk, look or use action.

Basically, this works perfectly, but as soon as I set walk-to-points for the hotspots, the player walks there before bringing up the coin, although there is no such command in my script, as right-clicking is only supposed to show the coin, while pressing the look button triggers a look action.

Does anyone have an idea on what might be the problem without me having to post my whole script, which is on another computer?

My guess is that the state of the "walk to hotspot in look mode" is not being saved properly, causing that strange behaviour, could that be checked?

TIA, Thunder

General Discussion / Scummbar will return!
Sun 29/06/2003 10:15:20
I haven't seen anything about these good news around here, so I thought I'd post this, as some of you might want to know:

Special Mojo shocking fact of the day:
Remember a few days ago when the venerable Scumm Bar closed its doors "for good?" Well, after numerous pleas and cussing-outs by their fans (and a couple ex-Monkey Island game designers), they've apparently had a change of heart. A visit to their site reveals a very funky flash animation promoting the return of the Scumm Bar in mid-July, with new management. Apparently Gabez is in charge now, and Remi will be merely taking a back seat to help with scripting and occasionally bark orders. (www.scummbar.com)

When I tried the translation feature on a small test game, I noticed that strings in SetGlobalString commands aren't re-imported properly. They are part of the translation text file, but when the compiled translation is run, there is still the old text displayed.

Has anybody elso noticed that?

Okay, here's another problem I'm working on at the moment:

In my game, I have a verb coin GUI and a status bar, normally displaying @OVERHOTSPOT@, but when the cerb coin is up, it displays "Look at <object>", "Talk to <object>" or "Use <object>".

So far everything works well, but in some cases, these phrases aren't suitable, 'talk to' should become 'eat' when clicking on an apple, 'use' should become 'pick up' etc.
I'm using three global strings to achieve this, but these have to be set before bringing up the coin. For hotspots, this is done in the 'mouse moves over hotspot' section, but for characters and objects, there isn't any such function. For some reason, 'any click on hotspot' is only triggered after the actual look/talk/use action is finished, so setting the Global strings in there didn't help either.

This is where my suggestion comes in:
either a "mouse moves over character" and "mouse moves over object" action, or an option to make 'any click on' execute before anything else happens.

I hope you understand what I mean. Any comments? Or is there another way to do it that I don't see at the moment?

Hi there, I've got the following problem:

I have a verb coin gui with three buttons for look, talk and interact. When a button is pressed, the corresponding action is triggered by a code similar to this:

if (button ==1){ // Look
GUIOff(COIN);
ProcessClick(mouse.x, mouse.y, MODE_LOOK);
}

This works fine except for the TALK action, when a characters 'talk to character' script runs a dialog. The coin stays on screen until a dialog option has been clicked, then it vanishes. I have tried to put a GUIOff command right before the RunDialog command as well as running it from a run-script command - it always results in the same.

Is there a way to make the coin GUI disappear before the dialog options are displayed?

Really, i don't have a clue what is happening here:
On the map screen, I have a small GUI in a fixed position showing the @OVERHOTSPOT@ text. It is set to 'script only' and switched on when loading the room in the 'player enters screen' funtion. (Before or after fadein makes no difference). Now when the GUI is on, no keyboard input is accepted anymore. Neither F5, F7 nor F9 and Ctrl-C work. Any ideas on what might be wrong here? I'm using AGS v2.54 by the way.
