Advanced Technical Forum / Looping Rooms
Sun 10/04/2005 11:28:00
Hey, first post in the tech forum, im pretty sure it should be here, and i have searched for it but cant find anything covering the topic. The only documentation i can find on looping rooms is the explanation of how its done that was used in the demo quest.

Has anyone actually used this in a game, because im trying to, but im having a few problems. For the most part the script used in the demo quest works fine, but at one end of the room if you're standing a certain distance from the end and click on the other side of the boundry between one end and the other the room shifts fine but then the player runs all the way to the other end of the room again. And i cant figure out why, heres the snippet of script tat controlls the walking in that room. Its the same as the one used in demo quest but with the distances changed.

Code: ags
function walk(int mx, int my, int ox) {
  if (mx+ox <= 160) character[DUKE].x = character[DUKE].x + 960;
  if (mx+ox >= 1280) character[DUKE].x = character[DUKE].x - 960;
  MoveCharacter(DUKE,mx+GetViewportX(),my);
}

The room is 1440 long and the origional was 960 before adding the first 480 pixels on again.

If you have any idea why its doing this then help wuld really be appreciated

Thanks - Rich

Critics' Lounge / Playing with 16 colors
Sat 02/04/2005 11:57:13
Well ive just been playing around with the typical 16 color EGA palet to see what sort of things were possible ect. All this is possibly in preparation for this months MAGS.

So here it is, some of the dithering is a bit dodgey. (if i hear 1 comment about how the choice of colors is bad i will flip... ive been muttering this to myself all the time ive been doing this)

Really just looking at suggestions and ideas and any other crits.

Ive come to the conclusion that this isnt really the best style to go for as drawing pixel by pixel for dithering is quite time consuming.

Critics' Lounge / A couple of chars
Mon 21/03/2005 19:45:41
Just wanted to get a few crits on these characters as well as some help in fixing the one of them.

Barney the security guard and Stu the coffee guy(possibly lead character for a game)
Barney is the one im having problems with, i just cant get his lower leg an arm to look quite natural. I've been nudging pixels about for 1/2 an hour and he just refuses to look natural. So some crits on that would be helpful, anatomy isnt my strong point.
I was going for quite simplistic shading(mostly two tone), but any crits on that (and whatever else) welcome

Thanks - Rich

Well apparently i won the last one, so i have to post a new one, i have however been on holiday so its a bit late, my appologies. I hope I'm doin this right, here goes:

Rules - Figure out a unique solution to a puzzle and its goals using the inventry items at your disposal and a few items of your choice.

Voting - After the deadline is reached voting will begin so a winner can be chosen. (No one voted for me, an i still won, so theres still a chance if no-one likes you, go on... enter!)

Prize - The winner get the honour of posting the next puzzle time, what a prize. And the first runners up get to enter next time! (So can anyone, but the runners up can as well)

Scenario - Seeing as i just got back from an amazing ski holiday i thought I would make this weeks puzzle time snow/ski based. (loosely based on the time I lost a ski in 6 foot of snow and spent 20 mins looking for it). So here goes: You are trapped in a ice cave after escaping an avalance and must escape and get to safety (and maybe throw in a few sick trix along the way).
Within the cave is the body of a snowboarder that wasnt so lucky either, other than that it is pretty bare. The enterance is blocked by snow.

Inventory - Three or more of the following must be used along with up to three items of your choice (found on the body of the boarder) in the most unique way necesarry to complete the puzzle.
-One ski
-A broken ski pole
-A very large icicle
-A small shovel (recomended to be carried by all skiers going off piest, of course i was too stupid to carry one. Just to note this is too small to dig your way out with)
-Backpack
-Disgusting gurkin sandwiches
-Fizzy water
-A broken snow board
-Bandages
-Broken ski goggles
-A SWISS army knife
-Head torch
-Chocolate

Can you escape a death beneath the snow? (Unlike the boarder who couldn't, but we all know they arent much use, all they do is cut you up and wreck the snow)

Post entries bellow, voting will take place on the 27th of feb.

Good luck - Rich

PS - If i did any of this wrong mods feel free to edit, also its a pretty suckey puzzel cuz i couldnt thin of anything.

Critics' Lounge / Flat landing and characters
Sat 15/01/2005 20:26:51
Hey, im new hear butive been browsing for a while.
Ive been playing with ags for a while (the programing side mainly) and recently got my hands on a piece of art software much better than MS paint (PhotoStudio, it just appeared on my computor after i installed a new printer and is pretty cool) . So I thought id try some backgrounds and sprites for a story ive been thinking about for a while. So ive got a few characters done and a background so i threw them together to get some advice on what i can improve. Anyways here it is, along with the main GUI lucasarts style.

I would like to improve on the lighting and think it should probably be a bit darker as its meant to be some cheap flats, i also think i went a bit overboard on the graffiti. It would be nice to see what people thought of my style as well as getting some crits on the background and the characters.

Thanks all - Rich
