Sorry about the late start,

Theme: Sci-fi meets history!

the world of science has advanced so rapidly yet the world is still living in the past. Make of it what you will, neo-victorian, steampunk, or something else!

---------------------------------------------------------

Voting starts 24th Jan 2009, unless more time is requested.
The voting will be done in these categories:

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Design - How well the elements in the image are designed,
such as landscapes, buildings, decorations, clouds, doorknobs,
etc.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites,
including appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

All the best!

So I've been working on this picture for maybe 2 and a half hours now (45 mins to do the pencil/charcoal sketch) And I just think to myself (I've made a mistake and can't go back)

I maybe merged layers to quickly (I wanted to get the scarf over and done with) but oh well. Personally I think it looks flat and boring, and the scarfÃ,  has got me in serious confusion (I originally intended it to be 'soft furry' and my drawing hand is very quick in REAL LIFE sketching for fur and hair but i'm finding my Wacom not as intuitive or as useful as I hoped (I may have to abadon the idea and just go with a folded scarf, but now I'm just panicking over how I will do the folds because it was a massive change of plan)

I accidently rubbed out a bit of the initial sketch but this was unavoidable as I wanted to 'eye' out the sketch,  the ceiling may be a 3D render eventually (unless I change my mind if I feel this effort is problematic)

I am aware it probably looks better a bit desaturated but I'm using the colour scheme as it is so I can identify flaws (for the meantime). Also feel free to contribute to the image if you want too

Hey, I'm sure some of you people have played some of the games developed on Flash (Exmortis, Johnny Rocketfingers, and many more on newgrounds )

Didn't you really enjoy these games? Yet these game makers are using formats which are rather limited with regards to art (vectors or inferior art) and general programming. Granted, there are a few benefits of using flash for adventure games but it won't give the same ease and flexibility of AGS.

I was wondering if any of these point-and-click authors even are aware of an AGS community, wouldn't it be kind of cool to invite them here and maybe possibly produce games with an AGS engine?

your thoughts?

Critics' Lounge / Devil Girl
Sun 15/10/2006 22:36:50
Ok, so today I whipped up a sketch of a devil girl ready to attack and sink her teeth into you. I know its pretty rough, I still need to clear up the hair bit (too lazy to erase) and yeah the hands are rubbish I know but maybe I might try a 'V' triangular sharp pointy angle tomorrow. I'm not going to continue on it tonight as I'm struggling to fight the effects of Atarax (drowsiness).

I will post my progress from this rough sketch, any C+C will be free, my biggest worry is how I would somehow smooth the surfaces from the shoulders to bum without showing 'edges' which otherwise suggest she is missing a back (does anyone know what im talking about here?

Ok, so I may need to thin out the shoulder bit but like i said this is a rough sketch and I'm more concerned with the shape.

Something about it bugs me but I can't put my eye on it.... oh and it needs a tail, I may add it tomorrow and see what I would come up with...

If I'm making a devil girl, Im wondering what colour it should be, red, grey, anything else? I know I may have the eye colour a misty white/grey colour to fit with the whole evil thing. Feel free to fiddle in areas you see an oppurtunity, thanks and I look forward to documenting this as I haven't done drawing in a while :-)

Critics' Lounge / Anthropomorphic drawing

So I went and did my friend as a catgirl, here is the original

and here is my version

I don't know what it is, but something bugs me, maybe because its impractical to have human dimensions when doing manga drawings etc. If anyone wants the Photoshop file just ask if you want to go over it yourself.

Hey, I'm someone who is suffered years of using my laptop touchpad, even though I do like the touchpad (survives coffee stains remarkably and my sweaty fingers) it is becoming increasingly obvious if I want to get anywhere I need to get a mouse or a WACOM pen woot!

I'm currently dabbling in Swift 3D, 3DS max, Photoshop, Flash MX etc albeit with a crappy medium and it does mean it can be time consuming for myself. I am naturally a hand artist and I don't think the war of technology is ever going to show my real ability if I am constantly fighting against the pad.

I know there is some other threads with Wacom tablets - but some of these tablets are discontinued and I am uncertain aswell. possible features I may like...

+ Transparent flap (pen-to-paper write over) this may be optional
+ Preferably not uber expensive, I am a student after all
+ I use 3D programs, I am not sure of the compatibility of stylus pens or whether I need to buy a seperate specific pen etc but this is optional

Will anyone be able to help me out? I live in the UK, where electronics are horrendously overpriced. Thank you, I can't help but be a perfectionist and I want the best for my buck but who doesn't?

Critics' Lounge / Room design?
Mon 05/06/2006 10:17:46
hello!
I've been a fan of point and click adventures and i've been waiting since summer to pick it up. I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to 3D design and adventure games, i could appreciate some criticisms

this is my first attempt at 1+2 perspective 3D drawing. I know its slightly boring but I wonder if the technical-realism is enough to make a good game or would it be offputting? (too cold) This room is more like a demo of skill then anything fancy.

(Drawn with Flash MX 2004 with object snapping: modified with PSP 9)

be honest, can I pull off the style?
