Dang it you guys, just write something with a cool bass part. It can be any style, any genre, any length, any volume, any tempo, any anything, as long as there's a bass part that's AWESOME. That's the only rule. Track with the most killer bass part wins. If there's any confusion, that doesn't necessarily mean bass guitar. It can be any instrument. We just need a really cool part in the lower register.

Contest will end sometime around July 18, 2015 or shortly thereafter.

Tune Contest! This time the theme is simple: Newborn. You can interpret that however you like. Create a tune somehow centering on the theme "Newborn" and then post it in this thread, preferably with a little blurb to explain the interpretation of the theme.

The criteria for winning is simple: My wife (pregnant and due to deliver this month :D) will choose the winner. Whichever track she likes the most will win.

The deadline for this contest is simple: This will run until November 24, 2014 (please let me know now if you want to enter but you don't think this will be enough time for you).

Another tune contest! This one is about spiders doing things.

You have to pick an action, and then write a piece of music inspired by or otherwise somehow about spiders performing  that action.

Here is a list of sample actions (though you can use any action, not just what is in this list):

Quilting
Racing Go-Karts
Baking Pies
Dancing
Fighting Robots
Writing Articles about Virtue Epistemology
Singing Opera while Solving a Sudoku (to pass the time since the spider is in prison)
Eating Flies

Basically, anything goes!

I want to point out, however, that you get bonus points for actions that spiders aren't known for doing. So if you write a piece about spiders eating flies, you'll probably lose, so you're better off picking something like "tattooing Ariana Grande's face on a giraffe's shoulder."

Also, if your tune somehow conveys that it is spiders performing the action as opposed to just any other creature (e.g. monkeys, humans, talking skulls, etc.), then all the better.

Declare what action you have picked, provide a link to your tune, and you're good to go!

Contest ends September 30! Enter on or before that day and you are IN!

Have fun!

Hi. This is a tune contest. In order to participate, you must create a tune. The theme this time around is COOL STILL WATERS. I want you to create a music track that evokes a sense of coolness coupled with a sense of stillness itself coupled with a sense of waterness.

I do want you to feel free to interpret this as loosely as you want, provided you are reasonably meeting the stated theme. So you can write a track that would fit as the background music in an AGS game set in a cool pond in a cave...

...or a more academic piece inspired by a lake surrounded by forests...

...or you could even write some kind of ode to a mystical pool of absu...

...though bear in mind that if you write some kind of extreme black/thrash metal track you are not especially likely to win unless you somehow manage to get your blastbeats to evoke the aforementioned senses of coolness, stillness, and waterness.

I do not want a song about Roger Waters still being cool, however true that may be. You are, of course, free to write such a song if you wish, but you will surely lose the contest unless the song is specifically about Mr. Waters chilling by a sweet little pool somewhere.

You can use any instruments, any file format (that is reasonably accessible for listening purposes), any length, any tempo, any volume, etc. No restrictions, except those already given above and the deadline given below.

You have until July 26 to complete your track and post it for review.

Not three months ago I got a flat tire while driving home on the freeway, so I figured, "this is a good time to get new tires." So I did. New tires. Today, I got up to go to work only to discover that during the weekend someone decided it would be a nice thing to do to stick a knife in one of them. >:( >:( >:( :'(

Are there any aspiring detectives around here who might fancy a visit to San Diego, California to see if they can figure out who did it? And are there any aspiring hitmen around here who might fancy a visit to see if they can make sure the culprit doesn't do it again?

Anyone else have any similar car stuff happen to them?

I'm afraid I have some bad news everyone. On the drive home from work today, a terrible accident occurred. I did not survive. But the good news is that the details of what happened will not be forgotten, for a solemn adventure game has been created to make immortal the memory of Luke "Erenan" Simpson, a beloved member of the AGS community who died heroically on his own birthday.

Feel free to cry as you play...

The Death of Luke Simpson

Hi there! Inspired by Vel's decision to release an album as a Christmas gift to everyone, I've decided to share a piece of music I composed back in late 2005. I'm not looking for critiques, so I thought it would make sense to put it here instead of the Critics Lounge. Anyway, here it is...

Thirteen Dreams
A Miniature Operetta of Sonic Images and Spoken Word
by Luke Simpson

This is a short multi-movement work for two electric guitars, cello, and six speaking voices. It's a piece of program music with a very loosely connected (and mostly esoteric) story consisting primarily of inside jokes and references to other works that I have created or am in the process of creating. This was actually written and very hastily recorded in a single week as a class exercise in which I had to write a piece of music based on a drawing, which was in itself based on another piece of music. So since I did this in such a short amount of time, please forgive me for the occasional blunder, timing error, etc. Also, I myself recorded both guitars, the cello, and all six characters, so please excuse the... er... crappiness of the spoken parts.

If you want to let me know what you think, feel free. If you want to critique it, you can, but again, that's not really why I'm putting this here. I just wanted to share it with you guys.

In case there's any confusion, the Coda goes at the end after track 12. If you read the program, you might notice that there is a thirteenth movement which doesn't appear to be in the zip file. This movement is only one note and is contained in the end of track 12, so there really is no missing thirteenth file. Track 6 is an ogg because the mp3 wasn't working for some reason that I couldn't figure out.

Anyway, I guess I'll stop talking now.

This is yet another tune contest. If you have any measure of musical ability whatsoever, please enter so that we can have a veritable plethora of entries. The contest will run from today until the 12th of October, unless extenuating circumstances demand an extension.

Here's the theme...

-= The Afterlife =-[/b]

Depict musically the first few (or many, if you wish) moments in the consciousness of a person who has just awakened in the afterlife. This need not be the afterlife as depicted in any real life tradition. In fact, I'm hoping that entrants will be creative and depict their own spin on what life after death may hold in store for us. And if you feel so inclined, you may write a few words about what you have composed. If any of this is unclear, good! Vagueness is all right. Just write some damned music for me! And as always... Be creative!

Go!

Okay folks... It's time again for another tune contest!!! This time the theme is...

The Wheel of Fortune

From http://www.wyrdology.com/scrying/tarot/wheel.html:

The Wheel of Fortune represents the cyclical nature of all reality. This is the essence of the wisdom hinted at by other cards such as the Fool and Death.

Life is change. Stability is stagnation. All things pass.

Yet for all that things change, the essentials remain the same. The wheel turns - day becomes night becomes day, rain becomes sun becomes rain, joy becomes pain becomes joy.

If well aspected in a Tarot reading, this card can indicate good fortune through change, the wheel turning for now to a better position.

If badly aspected this card can indicate what appears to be misfortune. It can also represent resistance to the inevitability of change.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I want you to depict that description musically. Give me the impression of a wheel turning, the world cycling, things changing, moving in and out of fortune and misfortune, etc. If you feel so inclined, you may describe specific situations in which these things are perceived, but this is not necessary. The key words here are cycle, change, and fortune/misfortune. Be creative with these! And most importantly, have fun! Go!

Okay everyone... It's time again for another tune contest, and this time the rules are as follows:

Theme for a Mechanical Person
September 4th through September 11th

Imagine that you are creating an operatic masterpiece in AGS, and you must compose a musical theme to represent each character in the game. One of these characters is some kind of mechanical person. Whether that be a robot a la Issac Asimov or a wind up toy soldier is entirely up to you. What I want you to do is to compose the music that plays the very first time this mechanical person appears onscreen. With what sort of anthem is he or she (or it?) introduced? Try to depict musically some sense of machinery... Make it sound like clockwork, give me the impression of gears turning, let me hear exhaust and steam pouring out... Be creative! Any genre or style of music is acceptable, as long as it suggests machinery.

Go!

EDIT: For clarification...

(When you said an Operatic Masterpiece in AGS I wasn't sure if you were talking Cinematic Game or just a game based around the musical score so I pretty much went with how I felt.)

Yes, please go with the rules as you understand them. It could be either of those things, or even something else. Be creative!

Okay, so I wasn't really planning on creating a thread for this, but since both other MAGS entries are here I figured... when in Rome, or something...

Elf Motors Inc.

A mysterious beast has invaded the car engine that's under Abbrekt's supervision. Help him track down the invader and put a stop to its shenanigans before the car is destroyed.

Feel free to download, rate, and comment on the game here.

I've managed to get the GUI to scroll down when the mouse is at the top of the screen, but when the image is scrolling it has some ugly unwanted colors on it. Then, they disappear after the GUI stops. I've searched the manual and the forums for this, and other people seem to be doing the same thing I am, but they apparently don't have this problem. I can't find any other information on what might be causing this. What's going on? :-\

My image:

When scrolling it looks like this:

Here's my code, in case that helps:

Code: ags
if(IsGUIOn(2)==0 && mouse.y < 4) {
Ã,  GUIOn (2);
Ã,  int gy = -40;
Ã,  while(gy < 0){
Ã,  Ã,  gy = gy + 5;
Ã,  Ã,  SetGUIPosition (2,110,gy);
Ã,  Ã,  Wait(1);
Ã,  }
}
Ã,
Ã,  if(IsGUIOn(2)==1 && mouse.y > 42){
Ã,  Ã,  int gy2 = 0;
Ã,  Ã,  while(gy2 > -40){
Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  gy2 = gy2 - 5;
Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  SetGUIPosition (2,110,gy2);
Ã,  Ã,  Ã,  Wait(1);
Ã,  Ã,  }
Ã,  Ã,  GUIOff(2);
Ã,  }Ã,

I don't understand what the problem is. I thought that maybe it had to do with making the GUI's y value less than zero, but putting it all in positive values didn't seem to change anything.
