General Discussion / Good CD repair kits?
Sat 02/02/2008 10:07:36
Does anybody know of any decent fairly cheap CD/DVD repair kits? I'd like one of the refillable or reusable kits. I was looking for reviews and couldn't find any, so I was wondering if you guys had used any that you like.

Critics' Lounge / low-res sprite and shading
Sun 13/01/2008 02:45:46
This is my first real character sprite attempt. The character will be in a 320x200 resolution. As you can see, I have pillow-shaded the bejesus out of it, a clear indication of my complete inability to shade much of anything within a small space and without the use of an airbrush. :P

So on with it then:

I included the palette currently used by the character at the top. Any paintovers are welcome. Feel free to bash the crap out of this sprite. :)
Also, I'd like it to look good in the end, but I'm new at animating pixel-people, so I need to keep the color count low if possible to ease that process a bit.

Critics' Lounge / A rework of an old gui
Sun 22/07/2007 22:25:49
I reworked an old gui that was originally intended for a first- person perspective game, took out all of the FP-specific buttons, and simplified it overall. I was wondering if you guys could crit this for me and give me a little advice. I'm generally happy with how it's coming along, although there are some things I don't like as well as others. :)

EDIT: almost forgot, the dark area in the bottom right is for inventory display, the gray button beside it are to select between the two inventories. One is normal items, the other is rune stones. The "grayed out" button along the top row should show the active regular item, and the dark space to the left will show the currently active runes (up to 3). You should be able to use runes to take specific actions, such as combining "weaken" and "plant" will weaken or break plants, " etc. I know it will be a pita to code, looking for some more simple ways to do it. any advice there (through pm's if it's more appropriate) would also be appreciated.

Hey all. I have a gui that will mostl likely be used for a first person game. I like it, but I'd like to get some more input on it. The second image is a possible character design if I decide to use a player character sprite. It's actually a paintover and alteration of a more famous sprite. :)

Edit: not using the sprite, but I'm still working on my spriting skills.

Put some texture into the new gui, tried to do some basic work on the buttons and such. Anyone want to comment?

In my neverending quest to avoid character art, I have made a couple of bgs. Both of these are for a prison space station and they are sequential. Nothing in particular bothers me about either one, and I especially am happy with the cell, but I figured since I still consider myself to be learning a lot of thing I would post them up here and see what you guys think.

And, yes, I know the viewpoint is different for these. I planned it that way. :)

Cell: There will be an animated sprite in the doorway which will obscure most of what's behind it.

And outside the cell. This is an animated background. The lower right is the cell you came from and the upper left cell will have an animated sprite in place of the static animated force fields of the other doors so that it will be easilly removable. There wll also be a door in  the left hand doorway. Obviously. With this bg, I have two versions. Can't decide which one to use, although I think I like the second one better.

Not being that great at spriting people or anything else that lives (I can draw everything else but people and animals, for some stupid reason), I wanted to appeal to some of you really good character artists out there to see if you could give some advice based on this ugly template. I have read many tutorials on the subject, but I learn more by studying actual works than trying to work directly from theory, at least in this area. So, without further ado, my crappy character template :) :

What I really need here is crit on the proportions, mostly. Something is off, I think, and I can't quite figre it out correctly. Maybe it's just that it's outlined in black, I dunno. The template is total width/height of 50x70, as that is the size I will need for my game.

Any help is appreciated as I am sort of stuck at my current level of suck in this area. :)

This will essentially be one of a couple of splashes used in the opening sequence. The star sucks, I know that, :D but the rest I'm mostly happy with. Any ideas?
