General Discussion / Replacing God
Fri 01/06/2007 22:52:08
Long philosophical rant ahead, first some foundation:
_________________________

Nature of the universe:

The amount of possible states the natural universe can find itself in is limited by natural laws and constants.
There are infinitely many states between two different states (like there are infinitely many real numbers between the natural numbers 1 and 2), i.e. the universe is analog.
Therefore, change (with time as a variable) from one state to another is natural if the graph of events leading to the new state (history draws a continuous graph) is continuous (if the current state can be understood in terms of cause and effect).

Supernatural events are either discontinuations (or cusps and such) in the graph of cause and effect, or such states that are impossible to acquire within the limitations set by natural laws and constants.

The natural universe is therefore a subset of the supernatural (and both are real/analog sets).

The possible states a supernatural universe can find itself in is unlimited.
_______________________________

Truth:

There is not always (if ever?) an objective, absolute truth.
Facts (which may be seen as absolutes) are only true within their definitions, i.e. a headline that proclaims 200 dead in plane accident requires definitions of what constitutes a person, an accident is, an airplane is and death is.

The meaning of definitions vary between people, some definitions have greater dispersion (e.g. many abstract things as good/right) or less tolerance for ambiguity (several definitions exist close to one another).

Sufficient/satisfying truths (and facts) are achieved when the rigidity and detail of the definitions are increased until there is only left an acceptable level (if any) of room for interpretation within the definitions.

Many concepts leave plenty of room for interpretation (e.g. the idea of what is good/right).
_____________________________________________

A truthful person:

1. does not provide made up/false facts
2. does not hide/leave out facts
3. does not provide pre-made cause-effect graphs to others, but allows them to draw their own according to their definitions

I see 3. as a necessity because of examples alike the following:
-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -
A somewhat truthful person would say:
"I broke the window BECAUSE James said I should do it WHEN we spoke earlier."
(This is an attempt to provide a pre-made cause-effect relation.)

A more truthful person would say:
"I said to James: Tell me to break the window."
"James said: Break the window."
"I broke the window."
(This allows a greater freedom for the listener to form a cause-effect scenario based on their definitions.)
-  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -
3. does not always equal intentional twisting of facts, as the person providing the explanations might also believe his/her own rationalizations.
_____________________________________

Of love in relation to truth:

Love (in relation to truth) is part acceptance, fondness, respect, generally harboring of positive intent and feelings toward something.

A person surrounded by love (positive intentions and feelings from others toward that person) is more likely to tell the truth according to the above definition of truthfulness. This might be because (if we still possess the will to live) we do not wish to subject ourselves to anything that could hinder us from living (pursuing our goals) now and in the future.

Therefore, when not surrounded by love, we attempt to create positive, capable images of ourselves, change ourselves into something that others will hold in high esteem, accept, and follow 1., 2. and 3. only when it promotes or does not lower our value in the eyes of others.
________________________________________

Of selflessness:

I believe a degree of selflessness can be achieved through truth. You become an amalgam of all the interpretations that people have of you (after you have ceased to lie, explain yourself and hide possibly shameful parts of your identity).
Your steering does not longer come from the inside (identity), but the outside (reputation), you become to a greater degree a function of your environment and genes; Less of an individual agent, more of a piece in the puzzle.
___________________________________

Of God, the effect God creates in believers and if God can be replaced:

(Assumption: God is love and love promotes truth.)

Through believing in a (possibly supernatural) God (that knows us better than we do and that loves us), a believer rids him/herself of the lies they carry and become possibly free to act as selflessly as is humanly possible (selfishly since they might pursue a reward for their belief, eternal life, but this resides in the supernatural universe).

The same truthfulness can possibly be achieved without a perfect supernatural being, but I believe truth based on natural love/benefits to lead to a different society than truth from supernatural love.

I imagine that a person can be truthful if:
- They lose all hope and desire for a meaningful life through pursuing individuality (have nothing to lose, no fear)
- They get a satisfactory guarantee of no retaliatory action (confessions to priests, shrinks, anonymity)
- The accumulated love is enough to open them up

I imagine a society based on natural love (and such truth) to homogenize through those united with the greatest power (the majority) eliminating all individuals (minorities) with opposing values/viewpoints/truths.

Example:
Assumption: (Truthful society, everyone knows everything about everyone else, there are no secrets.)
70% of people are pedophiles, 30% are not and possibly find it appalling and would like to see the pedophiles suffer.
If the 30% manages to concentrate more power, they will wipe out/enslave/incarcerate the majority, but if the majority has greater power, the minority will submit/be enslaved/wiped out.
(Based on the assumption of human nature that the strongest pursue their interests)
________________________________

Conclusion:

I imagine a truthful natural society to homogenize.

A supernatural society on the other hand causes the same effect of selflessness, but possibly promotes equality despite differences, since the judge is superhuman and loves all who believe in him/her/it, therefore the believers interpret and act accordingly to what clues the supernatural being gives them.

Questions:
Do we need the supernatural to hold on to the concept of equality despite individual differences?
Do you see other possible (heterogeneous) forms for natural societies that value truth (possibility: Vast public forums with almost total guarantee for anonymity and no intellectual property [possibility to hide / hoard facts and data] )?

General Discussion / IPRED2
Wed 02/05/2007 17:08:50
From http://www.copycrime.eu/
Quote
If IPRED2 is implemented without clear limits, "aiding, abetting, or inciting" copyright infringement on a "commercial scale" in the EU will become a crime.

Penalties for these brand new copycrimes will include permanent bans on doing business, seizure of assets, criminal records, and fines of up to â,¬100,000.

IPRED2's backers say these copycrimes are meant only for professional criminals selling fake merchandise. But Europe already has laws against these fraudsters. With many terms in IPRED2 left unclear or completely undefined - including "commercial scale" and "incitement" - IPRED2 will expand police authority and make suspects out of legitimate consumers and businesses, slowing innovation and limiting your digital rights.

Found via www.piratpartiet.se (I don't live there, this political party and it's agenda merely interests me):

Quote

Bad translation of the above quote:
Quote
Written by the Newsgroup on the 25th of april, 2007

Today on the 25th of april, the EU-parliament decided to accept the controversial directive IPRED2, which (among other things) makes file-sharing into rough* crime. The directive was passed in a way which in practice introduces a thought- and argumentationprohibition regarding copyright.

-The EU-parliament decided today that we will risk four years of prison if we argument in favor of piracy being beneficial to society, says Rickard Falkvinge, partyleader for the Pirate Party. Since it is one of the main points in our party program, in practice the party as it is has been criminalised, through the new label of crime "inciting to file-sharing".

Although the Pirate Party of Sweden might exaggerate and provide biased information, this doesn't seem promising. It might be time to bash Europe for a change.

*this is a bad and unclear way of saying it, I don't know the proper English law-terms, help is appreciated (feel even free to retranslate the whole thing).

What is a Photoshop Saturday?

Photoshopping isn't drawing a completely new image -- It's editing images to create a new image, such as editing one image or combining several images. The contest usually lasts for a fortnight. Also, you don't have to specifically use Photoshop -- Paint Shop Pro, MSPaint, or any other programs can be used, even Mario Paint.

Your task is to design from scratch of one of the Major Arcana Tarot cards, abiding by the above rules.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_arcana

Get crackin'!
#5
Your task is to depict musically one or several small lifeforms. If you choose several, they may be of different kinds or of one culture. You may begin to multiply.
#6
This week's contest is all about seafaring and related activities.
Here is a link for those seeking inspiration. Rig the sails!
#7
The topic is:Ã,  A campsite / improvised shelter.

The campsite/shelter may be depicted before, during or after it was used.
An improvised shelter could be something Robinson Crusoe-like (when people do not have access to tents etc. and have to use their surrounding enviroment).

Max resolution: 640 x 480
Colour depth: unlimited

The voting will begin on the 16th and end on the 17th. Voting categories:

* Best Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't neccesserily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

* Best Design - The style of the picture, architectural, landscape design, best mood, most evocative etc.

* Best Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites, including appropriate walking distances, good angle for character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood exits etc.

* Best Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of rendering.

First the fine print:

- Participants will write a story not limited by length unless specified by the month's rules;
- It's impossible for a judge to be impartial in this kind of competition where, for instance, great writing can save a meager plot. So the voting will be public, and go on for at least a week after the deadline, when the winner will be announced.
- The competition should last a month. Therefore, this particular one will run until the 20th of May. After that, we will have five days for voting. These deadlines are not absolute, but try to meet them.
- The actual posts must NOT contain the story, but a link to it. The story MUST be hosted somewhere, even if temporarily.
- The object of this is to write a story. It can be a short story with 10 lines, it can be a whooper with 20 pages. It can have no characters, or a myriad of them. It can be in first person, or third; present or past of future tense. Your ONLY limitations are the ones the rules state, if any.
- The winner provides the theme and rules for the next comp.
- The comp-starter may participate. It's happened already, and this voting system should elliminate unfairness. Of course, out of fairness, the comp starter should start it without already forming an idea of the story he may write.

The subject is: The Speech / an Audience. At least one of these elements will exist in your story.

Examples regarding what you may do:
(The Speech)  You may write the speech itself or describe the event from first person/outside/how you see fit.
(an Audience) You may intrepet this as a mass of people that have gathered somewhere or one person/inanimate object/animal. If it was by chance is up to you. If the audience remains a bystander/silent is your choice.

You do not have to stop there. Any way you intrerpret those two words should be okay, since this is a competition where the public decides.

If this was unclear, write your story how you understood me and come up with the rest. If you really must have further clarification (or this is a very bad idea), I can try to revise this or change the theme to something more conventional.

This is a current project that will hopefully see the light of day. Judge for yourselves. As it is now, it will be done in AGS, but things might change.

Nature works in mysterious ways, fumbling about in the dark. Sometimes it digs a hole for itself.
Or as Kinoko said: Anything that has evolved but is doomed to a short life due to bad "planning".
You don't have to restrict yourself to existing/extinct organisms.
Size: max 200 x 200 and 16 colors. Please include description/text/thoughts. Use your imagination. Everything organic, even plants, count. Godspeed.

The theme of this blitz is Mythology. It intentionally coincides with the sprite jam so you can make a character and fit it in an background (or just the background). You may intrepet the theme as a classical mythical place (gates of Hades), or plainly a fictional place of great importance (ex. USS Enterprise bridge, a setting from the Hitchhiker's guide), basically a central area (one your fictional game would not do without).
Make it seem special, awe-inspiring, extraordinary. Include some sort of text / description / dialogue (in your post, the background may be text-free). Especially if the story/movie/comic book/whatever is less known.
Resolutions: Those supported by AGS, standards (320x240 to 800x600), smaller (like Sbslovenia's), or even scrolling (may be larger than 800x600). Basically it must be loadable into AGS. Colors are unlimited. GO!

The voting will begin on the 19th and end on the 20th.

I was thinking of the following:
The game is split into two parts. One involves the real world, where a person is sleeping deeply. You control his friends, who decide to play pranks on him and do things like draw on his face, place his hand in a bowl of water, tie his legs together with a piece of string, tape all of his stuff to the ceiling, keep a bag of chips under his nose etc. Generally mischief/funny things you can do to sleeping/passed out people.
The other part is played by the person sleeping. The things you do to him in the real world affect the nature of his dreams. Place his hand in a bowl of water, and he suddenly finds himself knee-deep in water; pinch him, and he is chased by lobster monsters etc.

It could either work out linearily, like most adventure games, or like DOTT, where you can switch the characters when you wish, and their actions influence events elsewhere. Personally I'd like to see it as dynamic as possible, but I haven't created anything in AGS, so I don't know what it's capable of.

I won't probably do it in the next few years (or any other game for that matter), but feel free to evolve the idea, or just tell me if it's retareded.

I guess I'm partly biting the IF game Photopia with this one.

General Discussion / fanboyism
Tue 21/02/2006 08:23:21
I frequently stumble upon music, books, movies, generally stuff that seriously impress me. But sometimes when I've had a persistent creative block (I paint, draw, compose, write, think alot of shit that will never be of use to me) and I experience something, a 15-year old fanboy wakes up in me, and makes me do awkward stuff. It's kinda like from a Radiohead interview I vaguely remember, when they said that they were influenced by Dj Shadow and tried to make music alike his (could have been planet Telex), however the final outcome of that song was in their style, not Shadow's. Ã, Luckily I have grown old and lazy, so I escaped the alternate universe where I have a 200 page Star Wars fan-fiction on my computer (actually used to know a dude who had written one). The stuff I make nowadays gets scrapped/discontinued in half an hour if it's unoriginal (= fanboy stuff or just crap), but sometimes it evolves into something better.
The thing that i'm interested in is: WHICH SONGS/ BOOKS/ MOVIES etc have made you want to create something of your own (who/what inspired you and what did you create)?

Some recent things (that made me feel creative/awestruck/inspired):

(song) The Go! Team - Get It Together : The drums reminded me of giant explodingdog.com robots stomping the ground, so, I started making a animation with enormous robots (which got scrapped after I thought that it's retarded to draw a animation to someone else's song).

(movie) Primer: A time-travel movie, shot with something that looks like it could have been a dv-cam. It made excellent use of the viewer's imagination (practically no special effects or fancy stuff, kinda like the film Stalker by that russian dead guy). Primer made me want to film a movie of my own (made shorts in the past), but it made me think that it could be actually possible (to make a decent film that isn't neccesarily a B-splatter), without shoveling in loads of cash.

Especially love the 2-player game and mmmmm short films.
Go check them out. If you know any similar stuff, feel free to post links.
