General Discussion / Zombie Webcomic
Sun 12/09/2010 03:33:10
I have been helping with the writing for a couple of games that are currently under development. The thing is, there isn't always something to do. So I get bored. Quite often, actually. So I have been fiddling around with a idea for a webcomic/strip/etc and was wondering if there were any fellow AGSers with artistic talents that may like to help out. It wouldn't be a full time thing or require great amounts of commitment. Just something fun to mess around with and see how it turns out.

Without going into too many details (not that I have many details to share) this project will mainly be about a group of loud-mouthed, cocky, (etc) orphaned kids (ages 8 - 13/15 or something) versus a global zombie menace. The idea is to produce colorful characters in a quite graphic (gory) setting filled with humor, gore, and of course zombies. I may eventually need a extra writer to help with some of the comical aspects but for now I'm really just seeking a decent artist who may be interested to get with me, come up with concepts, plan, etc. Right now I'm open to any sort of artistic style and if you have any ideas, then great.

If you are interested, then feel free to comment or send me a pm. Thanks.

I'm not expecting to be flooded with responses but any input would be great. I believe this idea could turn into a rather fun, humorous, and entertaining side project.

General Discussion / Read Dead Redemption

Honestly this game is wicked fun. It has a few hiccups but overall it has been one hell of a experience thus far. Just wondering if anyone has gotten this game yet and what your thoughts are about it? Personally I'm loving the weather effects, attention to detail, and just about every facet of this great game. One of my favorite moments so far was when I got drunk in the saloon, stumbled out the door only to be knocked over by a group of men on horseback dragging a man down the road by a rope. Lucky for them I was too sloshed to get revenge. Peace.

Well excuse me for getting to this rather late. I forgot I had entered and did not think to check back. I guess I'm glad to see that I won the first comp entered even though it was not finished. I'm new to this competition thing so bear with me. Also, sorry I was not around to vote! I had some computer trouble... you all know how that is. I would have voted for Babar though!.

I think for this competition the theme should be about gaining something you really want while at the same time losing something very dear to you. This can be fiction or non fiction. Also, it can have any genre such as war, romance, science fiction, horror, etc, or a combination. It is up to you. It can be as long or as short as you want. The competition will end May 16th and voting will commence for up to a week after that. If no new entries appear after a amount of time then the competition will be shortened. I apologize if this is not the best idea for a theme but it will have to suffice for now. Let me know if this theme has been done before and I will come up with a different one.

Start Date: April 16th
End Date: May 16thMay 5th
Voting: May 16th - May 23rd May 5th - May 7th

Again, thank you for voting for me last time out. It means a lot to me. Looking forward to see if this gets any responses. Until next time.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / L.A. Noire
Tue 16/03/2010 14:31:39
I was curious if any of you have heard about this game and if so are you looking forward to it being released? It is being developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. While not strictly an adventure game I felt it belonged being mentioned here. As far as I know it is being developed for both the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3.

Taken from the website:
QuoteRockstar Games is pleased to announce a partnership with Team Bondi Pty Ltd to publish the ground-breaking next generation crime thriller L.A. Noire. Developed by Team Bondi, a new Australian based studio founded by Brendan McNamara, of The Getaway, L.A Noire is an interactive detective story set in the classic noir period of the late 1940's.

L.A. Noire blends action, detection and complex storytelling and draws players into an open-ended challenge to solve a series of gruesome murders. Set in a perfectly recreated Los Angeles before freeways, with a post-war backdrop of corruption, drugs and jazz, L.A. Noire will truly blend cinema and gaming.

Visit the offcial website for a game trailer. You can also read more about it in Gamer Informer Issue 203 or at their website along with some exclusive screenshot goodies. If this game does not qualify belonging here feel free to move it to the General Discussion Forum. Peace.

Well it's about time for my once-a-year post so here goes. I think a lot of people have a certain mindset when it comes to adventure games and how they play out. You have traditionalist on one side and innovators on the other. Each side have their own views and both have valid arguments about what adventure games are, where they are now, and where they are headed. Both parties have people who think the genre is dead, while others believe it is just hibernating, and others still think the genre is being revived. Well, we all have our own opinions on the subject but I've already gone off topic.

I guess I'm just curious as to what everyone believes qualifies a game as an adventure game today. Is it the story, puzzles, theme, atmosphere, a combination of all, or something else entirely. Do you want more games to be developed and published aka like games of yesterday or do you think a complete reinvention is needed such as the recently released game Heavy Rain? Do physical and/or/both mental puzzles alone qualify a game to be considered a part of the genre or can it succeed with story and characters alone? Or can the story itself become a puzzle?

Personally, while I love adventure games of all sorts, I play them mostly for the story. To me, puzzles tie a story together and makes everything fit into place. The definition of puzzle is often broad but I always liked the following explanation: to perplex or be perplexed. To me, a good story can be as challenging and often as puzzling as a problem that requires skill or ingenuity for its solution such as any physical challenge. But as I've mentioned, the definition of puzzle is often broad, and rather varied. But most adventure games feature puzzles that are hybrid. They require both physical and mental exertion on the players' part. I guess I've always favored the mental aspect over the physical parts. To me figuring out a plot twist, or discovering who the killer might be was always more fun than going from point a to b, while collecting this or that, in order to get past here to there. Collect clues, not clutter is a more simpler explanation I guess.

Well I shall end this post here or otherwise I would write indefinitely, straying from my original subject. I most likely poorly explained what I was trying to talk about but I'm a little rusty as late when it comes to writing well thought out topics and posting about them. Anyway, I would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on the matter. I apologize for the lack of proper grammar and text formatting. Thank you for your time.

I was online the other day having a conversation with a group of people, most of whom were still in their teens. We got on the topic of games and as they listed off their most favorite games and the like, both old and new, I realized that the games they considered old were from early 2000 at best. So I asked them: Do you have a favorite adventure game? To my shock they asked, "What is an adventure game?".

I know adventure games do not have the fan base like the use to have. It is a very niche genre as of late. But I was still surprised that there are gamers out there who have not even heard of an adventure game. The group of teenagers I conversed with thought an adventure game was, well I don't really want to repeat what they thought they were.

It got me thinking, is there more we can do to educate, if you will, the younger generations on the joys of adventure games? I'm not talking about some of the more modernized adventure games either, filled with eye candy galore and missing the finer points of what adventure games have such as good characters, stories, challenging puzzles that required more than just pixel hunting, and the like.

Are we, not just as fans but aspiring developers, doing what we can to help in this matter? You must excuse me, if you will, for the comment I got from that discussion got me thinking and mostly got me remembering the golden years of adventure games. Sometimes fads come back into style and one day I hope this is true for adventure games as well.

Please forgive me if this post is not as structured as I would like. It has been quite some time since I last posted on these forums. Thank you.

Fri 04/06/2004 01:59:30
I was just wondering which Ags Game(s), if any, would make a good IF (Interactive Fiction/Text Adventure) game? I'm wondering because I was thinking of getting back into making IF games.
