Critics' Lounge / simple art style
Mon 06/04/2009 00:02:37
I have been trying to come up with an art style that makes it easy to create lots of backgrounds and characters in a short time. I think I’ve got it pretty much down but I need some help.

this is a animation test with a male and female character. I like the male characters face down animation but his other animations need some work. I am pretty happy with all the female animations. The static character in the middle is my idea for a main character.

this is a background that I am working on. any changes or advise you can come up with would be appreciated.

I have a room with a bathroom connected to it and the two rooms are separated by a door. The door is an object in the room and in the interact with object area I put this code:

if (character[0].y > 131) { // character is standing in walkable area 1
      character[0].Walk(127,131,eBlock); //walk to door from walkable area 1
}
else {
      character[0].Walk(127,92,eBlock); //walk to door from walkable area 2
}

if (GetGlobalInt(28) == 0) { // if the Globalint is 0 (the default)
    // open door:
      SetObjectView(3,2); // open door view
    SetGlobalInt(28, 1); // set GlobalInt to 1 so the door will be closed on next interaction
  }
  else { // if GlobalInt is not 0, i.e. 1
    // close door:
      SetObjectView(3, 3); // closed door view
      SetGlobalInt(28, 0); // reset GlobalInt to 0 so door will be openend next time
  }

this works very well except I can't get it so when your in the main room (walkable area 1) AND the door is closed it removes walkable area 2 and vise versa but when the door is open both walkable areas are restored. And I'm not very knowledgeable with coding. what I have now is mainly trial and error and help from the forums so be as specific as you can.

Critics' Lounge / Background troubles
Tue 30/12/2008 04:17:05
I am having a very hard time creating backgrounds of rooms look like my outdoors backgrounds. I put the two together so you can better compare.

One of my big problems is that I'm not very good at drawing buildings. My outdoors backgrounds have many layers and have no strait lines and were very easy to make. I would just draw some organic looking shape and turn it into a tree or a bush or something in seconds but buildings are all about strait lines and are closed in by walls so there are a limit to how many layers I can have. It took me no more than an hour to finish the outdoors background but it’s taken me months just to draw the beginning of a room that I’m at all happy with. If anyone could give me some pointers it would be much appreciated.

Critics' Lounge / Some character animations
Thu 16/10/2008 01:14:21
I drew some character animations for a game I might make. The game would be called Dead Silence. I just thought of it not to long ago so its still in a very rough draft stage. The main idea is that the main character is a writer who has had a case of writers block for a while. He overhears some men talking about some elaborate illegal endeavor and uses the idea in his next book. The men find out and as punishment cut out his tongue. He looses consciousness and when he wakes up he is in the land of the dead. Turns out he’s not entirely dead yet and someone just made a mistake but he’s having trouble convincing anyone because he can’t talk do to not having a tongue. That’s all I got for now and things might change but what I know for sure is that the main character will have his tongue cut out and be involved with the dead somehow. Also I would like to have a talking severed head that he caries around with him for some reason.

The thing in his hand is a stick and he's suppose to be wearing a cotton gray sweater over a white button down shirt and tie but it looks like a trench coat. I'm not to happy with the walk animation but it’s the best I could do. And the bottom left animation was originally going to be a blink animation but it looks more like he’s casting a spell or something but it looked cool so I kept it.

Critics' Lounge / Futuristic floating torsos
Thu 01/06/2006 06:25:51
I don't know if I will ever put these in a game but I thought they were cool looking. They are futuristic floating legless guys with various weapons attached to them.

Far left one: This is the one that the other two are made from. He was the original and if you cant tell he is smoking a cigarette.

The middle one: The thing sticking out of his arm is suppose to be a chain saw but it doesn't really look like one. The thing on his other arm is a claw.

The Right one: I had the most trouble with what to do with this one but it kind of turned out to be the coolest one. He has a huge shoulder pad and a ball and chain for a hand. He has nothing for his other hand because I couldn't think of what to put there. I first thought of a hammer but it didn't look good. Any suggestions on what do with his empty arm would be appreciated. Oh and he has a Mohawk.

Critics' Lounge / Which one looks better
Tue 14/02/2006 00:48:13
Which one of these looks better? The original one is on the right. I put some "noise" in the other two and changed their color. The one in the middle looks cold, which is kind of what I'm going for. But I like the one on the left because it has an old rusty feel to it. What do you think?

Well I bet you all thought you would never see me again. I bet you were saying Oh man I'm sure glad that guy is gone his inability to ever finish a game and his gay name really brought down the quality of this site, but at least he's gone and will never ever return.” Then I'm all like BAM! I'm back what are you going to do about it! ALL BOW DOWN BEFORE ME..... Sorry I got a little carried away. Anyway I'm sure no one remembers this but I was working on a game about a guy in a dinosaur suit who was also an assassin who owned a racist dog and went around killing the elderly (because he would save money by not having to buy a silencer...because there old...and cant hear very well.... and are easy to kill). Anyway I've been working on the story for some time and it has been changed a little. He will not be wearing the suit when you play, I couldn't think of a rational explanation of why he wouldn't take it off when he started his "night job". And a new twist has been added to the story. When he goes to kill the old guy it turns out the old guy is working on a virtual reality chair that when someone is put into it they are transported to a 40s esc virtual world so the old man could go back to "simpler times" (ironically he was able to use advanced super computers and crazy new technology in order to go back to simpler times). But when the main character goes to shoot him he gets knocked into the machine somehow and transported into a 40s world. But the machine uses images of what you perceive the 40s to be in order to work but the only images of the 40s the main character knows of is bad space movies and monster movies and that everything was black and white. The main character will have to find a way to escape this 40s hell he is in, in a game I like to call...Softball Mascot Senior Assassin who gets into Interesting Situations or SMSAIS... or something, for short.
HERE ARE SOME ANIMATIONS:

The walk cycles are really plain and simple because that is always what I get hung up on. If anyone wants to try to make them look better be my guest. Also let me know what you think of the story.
Oh ya and the old man and his cronies will "jack" themselves into the machine to try to stop you and since there knowledge of the 40s is much better than yours things in the world will start to change opening up new puzzles, quests, ect. And the game will be made into chapters or “episodes” so I don't feel like I'm working on some huge game that will never get done.

Critics' Lounge / Action game animations
Thu 14/10/2004 02:30:02
I just got a new drawing program called Graphic Gale. Ive used mspaint for all my pixilated drawings in the past but im definitely going to switch to Graphic Gale. It has a lot more functions than mspaint with an easy to use interface. The first thing I drew with it is this action game sprite. I used the mega man sprite as a reference for the stance and the walk animation. What do you think? I really like the bubbles in his helmet/fish tank. I would really like to make this flawless so if you have any recommendations please tell me. Oh ya and that gray thing is a skull spine combo. I was originally going to have it floating in the tank but I thought it would be really hard to pull off.

I want my character to move like so:

How do I go about doing this? and how do I turn the down and up movements into left/up and right/down or just use/left up and right/down and somehow turn up and down off?

I have finished with my first two backgrounds and all of my main characters walk cycles. Feast upon my greatness with you gaping orbs of sight! I made the walk cycles really basic with only three frames because I usually get stuck on making my walk cycles perfect and never end up finishing the game. In the first background I havent put anything in the right window yet. C&C please

Last week my computer screwed up and I was forced to reinstall windows which erased all my drawings and animations for the RTS adventure game I was going to make so that idea is dead. But I have come up with an interesting idea for a new game and wanted to know what people thought of it so hear is the story:

Jon Crane is Benji, the big blue Brontosaurus, entertaining all at daycare centers and old people homes all around the east coast. Recently he hasn't gotten very many job offers ever since he accidentally knocked a Sun Dale Retirement Home employee out a 5th floor window. (Jon is in the Dinosaur suit knocking things off shelves with his tail. A large window is open and an employee is standing next to it. Jon turns hitting the man with his tail but the man steadies himself Jon then turns to another employee carrying a tray of pills and punches him threw the window.)
Seeing this horrible incident up close made Jon realize that life is fragile and that he needed to have a job ware he could really help people. He put one and two together and came up with the logical conclusion. (Shows a group of graduating med students then pans over 10 feet to Jon walking out of a gun store.) He was going to be a hit man.
Jon gets his first assignment during one of his Benjee gigs from an old man who picked up one of Jon's business cards. The old man, Frankey Molten, wants Jon to rub out a man by the name of Bert Henderson who is the only man who could beat Frankey in the Vlanderhill Retirement centers upcoming senior racing event which is basically a light jog from the front office to the cafeteria ware the winner will get a small plastic trophy and a Jell-O cup.
Jon decides to take the job if the man gives him six thousand dollars and a Jell-O cup. So Jon heads out to find this Bert Henderson with the help of his racist dog, Kert. There will be danger, there will be excitement, and there will be Jell-O cups. This Fall Danger has a new name, Benji, the big blue Brontosaurus.

Critics' Lounge / Adventure/Strategy game
Mon 05/07/2004 21:54:32
I have always wanted to make a strategy game but I cant do programming very well and there isnt any strategy game makers out there. So I came up with an idea to make a Strategy game using AGS. I havent worked everything out yet so I dont even know for sure if this is even possible but what I'm thinking of doing is you can only use one guy at a time by switching between characters. You will only be able to make like 10 guys so you wont have to keep track of an entire army of characters. The thing I always thought would be neat is instead of making knight, peasants, and everyone else in separate buildings you will only have one building that makes towns people. Lets say you want a person to be a miner you would have them use a pickaxe (which would be in their inventory to start out with) on some gold. That way if you would run out of gold you could then make that person a knight or something. Again I dont even know if this is possible but I'm going to try. I have only made the front walk cycle so far. If anyone want to see if they can do a better job at it I would like to see it or if anyone wants to try animating any of the other positions they could it would save me a lot of time LOL. (shutters at the fact that he actually typed LOL)

this is what the game might look like.

Critics' Lounge / small Medieval people
Sun 20/06/2004 22:28:06
I drew this with ms paint when I was bored one day. I might do something with it some day in like an Rpg adventure type game. Im going to draw a lot more armor and clothes because I think one of the most fun aspect of a game is being able to customize as much stuff as possible and if I would make this into a game I want to include a lot of customizable stuff. Tell me what you think of it or what I should change or... well you know what to do.

Critics' Lounge / Flash background
Thu 15/04/2004 22:42:45
I made this background in flash today and I want to know if it is in perspective. I havent put anything in the room except for two characters to see how big I needed to make the doors. The colors will probably change to something darker. I basically just want to know if the room itself looks ok. And just incase your wondering the character on the left is a giant thumb or big toe I havent made up my mind.

PS: I made this background in Flash but saved it in image ready. Is there anyway to either upload it into the sight strait from Flash or make it look less pixely when I save it to a different program?
pps: I finally made an avatar. You like.?

I want C&C on the characters themselves more than the drawings. The drawings could change because they arent really similar in style to my other characters.

The one on the left is Candy Rapper. He is a famous rap singer who raps out the ingredients on the back of various candy products. "Yo Candy does that contain peanut tracings!" "Yo man you know it made in the same factory as peanut M&Ms!"
The man on the right is a small fireman. Hes not called that because of his size its because he only fights small fires like trash can fires or a cigarette thats not completely out. He believes that only when you dedicate yourself to one size fire can you truly take on that fire with full force. Its like doctors who specialize in certain fields such as brain surgery. You wouldnt want a doctor who knows a little about a lot of different procedures doing a face transplant on you, you would wont a specialist, right?

By the way I changed my name from morgan to MEGATRON.

I'm starting a new game that takes place in an apartment building. The characters are the residence of the building. The first pic is the main character that is a writer of fictional stories. The other guy (brain in a jar) is his roommate. My original idea for his roommate was a ware wolf that was a layer but I cant seem to draw a good-looking ware wolf.
I don't completely like the side view of the writer.

This is his apartment I havent drawn the door to his bedroom yet but everything else is there. Im pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Tell me what you think and what I should change. Thanks in advance.

These are some of the people in the town of Draul. The old man is the owner of an antique shop. The big blue guy is some kind of gaurdian who is under a spell (thats why his hands are in the air). The guy laying down is a drunk and the guys at the bottom are Bruce Brawn(right) and his dad (left). Tell me what you think. I will post more when I can.
P.S. DOWN WITH SMILES! :)

Critics' Lounge / Bruce Brawn
Fri 15/08/2003 19:06:26
This is the main character for my new game; I really hope I finish this one. His name is Bruce Brawn. His father was a great hero and Bruce is trying to go into the hero biz himself. He's all Brawn and no brains. So he will get into humorous situations were he thinks he is helping but ends up ruining everything. The guy on the end is his father who bares a striking resemblance to the man on the Brawny paper towels. I'm having a little trouble with the side view. Well I'm off to tackle the walk animation.

Critics' Lounge / Super Hero game
Thu 10/07/2003 04:54:07
I'm thinking of making a game about a group of really useless super heros that save the day some how. The only idea I have so far is that one of them will have the ability to shoot a laser out of his eye but it isn't the cool kind of laser it's just a red light like in a laser pointer.

This guy might be one of the bad guys in the game.
