AGS ANNUAL COVER COMPETITION

(Copy and Pasted from the topic running in Adventure-Related Chat (See my Sig)).

The back of the case will included a list of the content of the disc, while the spine will match last year's annual, so entries should be limited to the front, which has a dimension of:

1536x2175 pixels (wxh)

Entries should be supplied as either TIFFs, PNGs or JPEGs (the less compression the better), and emailed to me:

mattgoble is my username, gmail is my account.  Hope that makes sense  ;)

Below is a link to last year's artwork (Not the greatest, I know, but a last minute, late night attempt by yours truly)

What does the winner get?

Whether the 'winner' is coming to either Brittens or Mittens or not, I will send them a final copy of the annual, along with any other 'goodies' I can think of.

Hi Gang,

Hope everybody is well  ;D

-- UPDATE 29-07-07 --

<Cough>

So, um, Mittens 2007 was great...

Before I start a new thread for the third and probably final Annual, which obviously didn't come out this year (Apologies to those Brittens / Mittens 07 attendees who only came for the freebies  ;)) I remembered that I still had some unfinished business from last year, and having just found the box of Annuals, I thought I should act on this before too much more time passes.

The Winner of the 'Design a Cover' competition was Limping Fish.  I'll drop you a pm in case you don't see this, but if you want to pm me your address I'll send you out a copy of Volume 1, and Volume 2 which has been 'signed' by CJ.

In the end, I also used an image supplied by 2ma2, so again blah blah pm blah address, I'll send you a copy of Volume 2.

The following attendees are still entitled to a copy of the Annual:

M0Ds
Magintz
- Scotch
Layabout
- Adam & Becky
- CJ
AGA
- Annie (OneThinkingGal and ._.)
- Creed Malay (Davy Malay)
- Dave Gilbert
- Hajo
- Jake (Hotspot)
- Privateer Puddin' (custard)
- spleen (Iqu)
- YicklePigeon

And that should be it for the 2006 annual!

-- UPDATE 10-08-06 --

Ok, so tonight is the deadline for anyone who wants to send in a cover for this year's Annual.  I'll announce the winner at Mittens and organise sending the prizes out when I get back.

To save on space in my luggage I will probably bring the discs out in slim CD cases, and then supply printed DVD covers for people to take back sandwiched between their notebooks / magazines / porn etc.

This appears to be the final breakdown on attendees:

- M0Ds
- Magintz
- Petteri
- Chrille
- Grundislav
- Scotch
- Quintaros
- Radiant
- Layabout
- Farlander & Lorena
- Adam & Becky
- Goldmund & Dominika
- CJ
- Helm
- Mattgoble
- Sinitrena
- Disco
- AGA

Which I make to be 18 (21 if the couples want 1 each  ;)) - So 25 copies should cover you guys!

- Annie (OneThinkingGal and ._.)
- Creed Malay (Davy Malay)
- Dave Gilbert
- Hajo
- Jake (Hotspot)
- Privateer Puddin' (custard)
- spleen (Iqu)
- YicklePigeon

And 8 attendees to Brittens who won't be in Spain.  Guys & Gals, if you want to PM me your snail mail address I will drop a copy in the post when I get back.

-- UPDATE 09-07-06 --

So the games are coming in thick and fast - many thanks to everyone who has offered the projects up, or said 'yes' when asked!

This year's annual will very quickly fill a CD-R, so I was wondering whether people had a preference to either a DVD-R or multiple CD-Rs?

-- UPDATE 04-07-06 --

OK Guys, there is still time to send me details about your games, music, photos, plugins, modules, whatevers to be included in this year's annual.

As an extra 'thing', I would like one of you talented individuals to design the front for this year's DVD Cover.  (Mods - didn't know whether this should be also posted in competitions & activities?)

The back of the case will included a list of the content of the disc, while the spine will match last year's annual, so entries should be limited to the front, which has a dimension of:

1536x2175 pixels (wxh)

Also, due to the constraints of bringing these discs to Mittens, I might package the discs up in normal CD-Jewel cases and include the DVD Cover artwork on the disc - it all depends on how many copies I need to bring (more on that later).  If this is the case, I can scale & crop the winning artwork down for these cases, although please feel free to also enter a design based around a 12cm square at 300dpi.

Remeber, the main aim is for the DVD Cover artwork, NOT the CD Sleeve

Entries should be supplied as either TIFFs, PNGs or JPEGs (the less compression the better), and emailed to me:

mattgoble is my username, gmail is my account.  Hope that makes sense  ;)

Below is a link to last year's artwork (Not the greatest, I know, but a last minute, late night attempt by yours truly)

What does the winner get?

Whether the 'winner' is coming to either Brittens or Mittens or not, I will send them a final copy of the annual, along with any other 'goodies' I can think of.

-- END OF UPDATE --

I thought I should start this year's submissions for the AGS Annual a little earlier, considering how disorganised I was this year...

For those of you who are wondering what I am talking about, can visit this topic:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=20863.0

The deadline for submissions will be a couple of weeks before Mittens, or Brittens or whichever 2006 gathering comes first!

In the meantime, please feel free to contact me via PM with submissions and suggestions - I will do my best to contact as many of you as possible, but please don't wait for me as I do have a tendancy to miss out on some of the most obvious games!

All the best

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the delay in updating this post.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who gave me permission to include their software - I know most of you had probably never heard of me, so that fact you were all so helpful means a lot to me, and says a lot about this community.

Secondly I must make a couple of apologies. I was a very disorganised in getting this put together, and left the contacting of a large number of you until the last minute.  I know some of you gave me permission to include your games after I had produced the discs, and so I'm sorry that I 'messed' you guys around - I hope it is ok to include your games of AGS Annual 2, which I promise to give myself more time to get organised!  Of course, in the rush to make my own deadline, a few mistakes crept in, including a couple of corrupted files.  Again, this is something I will give myself more time to deal with for volume 2.

The following is a breakdown of what was included on the CD:

And on with Volume 2...

I will soon be contacting people with regards to contributions for volume 2 (Available at  Brittens / Wittens 2006 and Mittens 2006!).  In the meantime,

please feel free to post suggestions what you would like to see, and those of you who got Volume 1, what you would like to see different!

All the best!

------------------------ Orginal Post -----------------------------

Hello Everybody, thankyou for coming...

So the thing is, I've had a thought.  Unoriginal, probably, but still a thought.

What do people think about a software AGS annual, or yearbook.

Most AGS users will download, and have their own collection of demos, games etc that they have collected over the years, but wouldn't it be nice to have it all collected together on one series of discs, a but like the Fred Fish collections back in the days of the Amiga.

I don't want to use the word 'official' here, but I'm thinking a 'standardised' series of discs, containing the best (and worst) that AGS has to offer.

This may be of use for people still on dial-up, who cannot download the bigger files, but mainly it would be the opportunity to own a tangible 'product', which can take pride of place on your Adventure Gaming shelf.

Now, Brittens is about 6 weeks away, and Mittens not long after that.

I am offering to collate and produce a CD-ROM with packaging for no cost (as long as things don't get silly).  I will bring completed product to Brittens for everyone who attends, and supply discs and printed parts to someone to take to Mittens (Which should be quite easy to pack and carry).

Now, I don't want to start going through the forums and just helping myself to people's games etc, as I appreciate that some people will not wish for their work to be distributed like this.

Anyone who wishes to contribute to this, can either PM me here or send me an email to my Gmail account which is 'mattgoble' and you can work out the rest...

Requirements

- It has to be AGS related.  At this stage I don't think it is wise to pull in funny star wars related videos that forum members have made.  If it's GEN-GEN, then its NO-NO (For now)

- It shouldn't be grossly offensive.  I honestly don't think there has been anything that falls into this category, but I don't want to be proven wrong!

Suggestions

- As this is the first annual, I am open to including anything related to AGS from the year dot to June 26th, which will then give me the following week to put the final touches on the disc.  Volume 2 will then start from the 27th until Brittens / Mittens 2006.

- An archive of previous releases of AGS?
- Demos
- Games
- Plugins
- Tools / Utilities
- Photos from AGS Events
- Walkthoughs
- Tutorials
- AGS Manuals / Documentation
- Screenshots, either of classic games or up and coming games.
- Music / Sound Effects

Now, I suggest that anyone who wishes to contribute, does so by the two forms of contact listed - NOT by this topic.  That way, it will be a nice suprise / shock when people recieve the disc.  Ideally, lets keep this topic for general discussion about the concept and as a general update to how this disc is coming along.

Comments attacking me for not producing games will of course be accepted  ;D

Finally, if there is enough interest, we can do this again next year, and perhaps organise for an torrent file of the ISO image to be made available for those unable to make either Brittens and Mittens.

I think that will do for starters.

Just a quick note to say I've returned from the Brittens Camp Site.  A good time was had by all, and is still being had by most!

I'll post a bit more later this evening, but here are a few nuggets for now.

- Plenty of new Avatar / Wallpaper images featuring CJ!
- Petteri and Davey brought down a couple of demos, plus Magintz showed some screenshots of his new game.
- It rained, a LOT!

Pop back over the coming week as various members recover from their ordeal.

I managed to pick up a cheap GameCube and a couple of games in the recent WHSmith Megasale, but I've noticed a couple of issues with the analogue controller when compared to the PS2 - am I getting old, or becoming a complete muppet?

The pad seems very plasticy and 'toy-y' when compared to the PS2, but more importantly it appears to be slow and unresponsive - you make a move with the pad, and there is a noticable gap before your character responds (This is in both Wave Race, Zelda and the Start up screen).

At the same time your characters also seem 'over-sensitive' with anything more than a very minor tilt causing them to shoot off in extreme directions.

- Has anyone else experienced this?
- Are Nintendo pads just like this - can the responsive be improved with 3rd party pads?
- Is my pad faulty?

Cheers boys & girls!

General Discussion / Channel 4 - Swearing
Tue 30/03/2004 21:35:43
Out of interest, did anyone manage to save off the flash file Channel 4 had on their website.  It was an advert in the current Channel 4 style of asking TV Stars their favourite colour, food etc but this one asked them their favourite swearword.

As I said, they had it on their website for a while but it seems to have gone now, and nothing shows up in Google.

Cheers

I've been experimenting with different video formats for cutscenes, and have run into a strange bug with MPEG video files.

www.mattgoble.com/interaction/ags/zips/video.rar 1.2Mb

This file contains a test game along with 4 small video files:

320x240.avi - DivX 5 encoded
640x480.avi - DivX 5 encoded

320x240.mpg - MPEG-1
640s480.mpg - MPEG-1

Clicking the hand icon of the various objects should play from left to right...

320avi, 320mpg, 640avi, 640mpg

The AVI based video plays, although it is rather grainy which I am guessing is to do with the colour depth that DivX work in.

The MPEG based videos just display a black screen for the duration of the video.

This occurs in both fullscreen and windowed in both 320x240 and 640x480.

All videos play back fine in windows media player 7, I have had mpeg files playing within AGS before.

I am running Windows98SE on a 1Ghz Athlon with 256Mb RAM and 8Mb ATI All-in-wonder Pro card at 24Bit colour depth.

If people could try out the files on their computer I would greatly appreciate it - MPEG I feel is one of the best options in terms of installed userbase and processor requirements.  Unfortunately people also need to be able to see the content!  ;D

Many Thanks for your help

Matt
