Okay, so I haven't posted much since I joined this forum in 2007. Some of you know me, slightly, I guess. But that's not the reason I came.

I'm working on a something. I'm creating a small-as-possible DOS game/platformer library. Something that runs on a 16-bit pc. Blah blah blah... I'm also making an editor for it that can run in Operating Systems from Windows 95 to Windows 10 (and possibly Linux ports in the future). At the moment I'm planning to horde all this to myself. The editor and the library are for me to complete a full game of my own.

BUT, in the future, I want to release it free to the public.

The thing is, the editor so far (just started to prototype it yesterday with wxWidgets) has taken serious inspiration from the AGS 2.x windows editor. And by that I mean, it's basically just an exact copy in design. Before I get further into the building of it, I wanted to ask the AGS community, and possibly Chris (if anyone knows where he is), if this would cause any problems if I release it (free for any use) so others may use it, in the future. I know the new AGS is open source, but I'm not sure of the legality on the old versions.

The reason behind all this is I loved how the AGS editor flowed (AGS has obviously been a huge influence in my life), I want it to run on Win9x as well as modern Windows versions, and nostalgia. The latter being the whole point of this project.

Anyway, maybe I'm overthinking it. But I wanted to be upfront and ask everyone here. If there are problems, I'll start a completely different design.  :=

Critics' Lounge / Squigglevision Graphics
Sat 19/01/2013 15:12:36
I've been experimenting with graphical style over the past year or so, and lately I've been inspired by "Squigglevision" cartoons like Dr. Katz, the first season of Home Movies, etc. Plus, I bought a new graphics tablet that's big enough I can actually use it.

I made a little mock-up in ags:
http://bluecup.suitorgames.com/squigglevision.zip

Or if you don't want to download the zip: (Just imagine the lines wiggling ;))

I've heard that this style in cartoons is distracting, Would this be too distracting for an AGS game? Opinions wanted :)

General Discussion / SOPA and PIPA
Wed 18/01/2012 05:44:30

This
has just been brought to my attention while trying to access wikipedia. It seems like a lot of websites are protesting SOPA and PIPA. Personally, I think this blackout thing is a pretty awesome idea.

You gotta love the U.S. Government  ::)

So, I've been planning something, and I've been experimenting a lot with style. I'm crap at animation, and I like the idea of using digitized videos/photos. (A process that I've found fairly simple). So far I've done nothing I like with backgrounds, but as for characters I was thinking something along the line of this very quick example:

Something easily editable with a drastic reduction in color. If I were to draw and animate this from scratch it would take me at least 10x longer. (Just the way my brain works). Adding more frames is something I've contemplated on, but in my opinion, seeing this in a test game with drastic scale changes, isn't making much of a difference.

I was also considering making the game black and white. So early on in planning. I just need some opinions.   ;)

Critics' Lounge / Idustrial/Rock/Metal Music
Sat 30/07/2011 17:34:01
I started this one-song-a-week project. It's gained a bit of attention, but I have no real source of honest opinions because social music networks are all about the follow-me-I'll-follow-you sort of thing. So, I figured I would post here in the critic's lounge to see what the AGS crowd had to say about it.

Here's the link to all the music: http://revoltattherobotfactory.blogspot.com/

I've been recording music for years, and I don't have an awesome home setup. But with what I do have, I still know there's room for improvement.

General Discussion / Some Acoustic Music
Sun 12/12/2010 15:20:01
I haven't been around these woods in a while.  ;D

As some of you know I've been into quite a few musical endeavors. This time it's acoustic. I have no idea what this one is going to be like in the road ahead, but I figured I'd post it here just in case anyone likes folk-ish acoustic music.

the website is http://www.joshuasuitor.com , there's a couple of songs on there. :)

The songs are home recorded, and not professionally mastered. I hear there's an underground following of such music floating around the internet.

So what's music to you? Is the struggle to professional recording a must? Is DIY dead? Or, do people really just listen to what sounds good to them, whether or not it was recorded in a multi-million dollar studio?

Just a little experiment of mine.

I've tried searching the forums for this particular problem, but no specific help. I've seen games like this before, I know it is possible. I've racked my brain too much trying to fix it. Maybe I'm over looking something.

My dilemma is that my character is only supposed to walk horizontally, but it takes several clicks on the screen to get him to move.

Here's a pic to help visualize the problem:

using Build 3.1.2.82, btw

Sorry I knew I'd solve it as soon as I posted it. My Apologies...

just changed:

Critics' Lounge / A few songs
Sat 03/07/2010 16:37:41
I recorded four songs for a free album, since I'm always doing stuff like that. Just wanted some people's opinions on them. They might not be for everyone as the style is a little pop-ish.

Anyway, they are in this directory:
http://suitorgames.com/songs/

If I ever finish this, I'll post the finished album the General Discussion or something--if people like it. Free of course ;) I'm all about free music. XD

Reality-on-the-Norm / Another version of Mika
Wed 24/03/2010 23:52:47
I did this a while ago and found it sitting on my PC, and figured I might as well post it. I remember I wanted a version of Mika somewhere between the Wogoat version and the classic one. But never got around to making the game itself.

Anyway, it was just collecting dust on my hard drive, so feel free to use it. It's not that special, and no animations.

Critics' Lounge / Big-eyed alien
Fri 21/08/2009 19:06:15
Every now and then I get self-cautious, so I figured I'd post these for C&C.

I'm not really happy with the front and back views which is my main concern.

...

Also, what do you think of this style?

Super low-res!

Both the blue guy and the girls are from two separate  projects, and one has to be made first. Just trying to get ideas before continuing any work on one of the two.

Any improvement suggestions are very welcome as always  ;D

General Discussion / A free album!
Wed 24/06/2009 02:15:03
I started it out just for fun, and one song lead to another. All of a sudden I had a whole album of songs. I wasn't being completely serious about it, and I wasn't going to let anyone hear it. But someone might actually like it. I decided, after thinking about it for a while, not to hoard it and post it here.

Anyway here it is http://www.mediafire.com/?ojm1ewnglgn (46.75 MB)

and I made a myspace for it http://www.myspace.com/revoltattherobotfactory

Anyway, hope someone likes it.

Critics' Lounge / Character "Reinvisioned"
Mon 02/03/2009 14:39:52
I'm trying to flesh out a style for a total reboot of an old project.

x1

x3

My main concern with this is what to do with the hidden arm, but I'm sure there are other things that need improving.

As always I appreciate the C&C.   ;D

EDIT TO ADD: Another character with views...

Critics' Lounge / Punk Short
Sat 13/12/2008 18:46:11
I've been playing with some guitar tones, and drum loops. I'm planning a punk-ish album (going back to my roots for memories' sake), and I'm thinking of getting a new Drum Loops set from beta monkey.

Anyway here's a sample of the drums in a short recording I did in about 10 minutes (never mind the playing).
http://www.mediafire.com/?wyjkhcwmctw

This was just a quick test with a sample of the Beta Monkey Punk Drums, I need critique on the quality more than anything.

Critics' Lounge / Portrait
Fri 05/12/2008 01:32:42
I've been working on some things, and molding out a character. This would be a portrait that I first "sketched" on a the pc with a mouse, then shrunk down, and did the ole tracing thing. I've been experimenting with different methods; I think I could improve a lot easier with this method...

and the 'digital sketch' I started with...

I've done this before with my avatar, but with a scanned paper sketch. I used the hell out of the burn and dodge tool in gimp. It seems more time consuming to me, but it feels easier.

I was going to wait until December, but I decided to go ahead and release this early.

STORY:
On a very cold and snowy Christmas eve, Otis needs to build a fire to keep warm.

SCREENS:

This is a very short game that I've put together in my spare time. It should be good for ten minutes or so of gameplay. This is also the first AGS game I've released.

EDIT 1/2/2013: Voice Speech added!

Get it here! And Enjoy.

I suppose this would be a beginner question.

I have defined 4 global variables.

Code: ags

int Chest = 0;
int FireWoodDamp = 0;
int WaterHeaterLit = 0;
int WineHole = 0;

But AGS treats them all as Global integer 0. I've tried using the Global Varible Pane, and I've tried doing it myself in the global script header. And it does the same thing.

I searched the forums for a while to find a solution, but came up with nothing. I don't know if I looked hard enought or what...

I can get by by using the search and replace to turn them all into numbers instead of custom names. But I'd like to resolve it so I don't have to write down what each global integer is.

I'm using AGS 3.0.2 sp1 btw....

Critics' Lounge / Character and Title Pic
Wed 29/10/2008 04:30:13
Here is a couple of things in need of critique. They're for an upcoming project, that I will (hopefully) start production in December after NaNoWriMo. Just needed some thoughts on the whole thing.

Title Pic:

The PC, Emmy:

A little about the game, which also needs some c&c/inspiration (what little I have of the story):
Emmy (the PC) discovers a portal to another world where she befriends a ball-like creature, Otis. Emmy has to help Otis **insert problem here(maybe save his planet?)**

Anyway, that's about the gist of it...

General Discussion / Close call...
Mon 27/10/2008 07:28:43
I can't stop thinking how my life could have ended earlier tonight.

My wife was mad at me. I was on a two lane road, and a car, coming from the opposite direction, was driving in the wrong lane (my lane!). We were both going about 55mph. For some reason I didn't see the headlights until I was right up on them. Needless to say I found out that my car has really good brakes (thank God!). I braked hard and pulled over with about a foot to spare, and the bastard just went on like nothing happened.

What I couldn't figure out is why he was driving in the wrong lane? The guy/girl must have been playing chicken with me.

I was too panic stricken to see a description of the car or I would have called the law.

Images of me and my family in caskets have been flashing through my mind since then. I now realize my own mortality (even more).

One good thing did come out of this (besides living)... My wife stopped being mad at me, haha.

I bet everyone else has had a close call at some point.

Critics' Lounge / Portrait C&C
Fri 29/08/2008 01:08:04
Its been a while since I posted anything for C&C. So here's a portrait from something I've been brain storming...

I've been trying to refine my shading.

Critics' Lounge / Song for C&C
Tue 03/06/2008 18:54:19
Well, between AGS and the family I'm working on recording a homegrown album to be released for free to download. I have the first song that maybe needs some c&c.

http://www.myspace.com/woodsongmassacre

I hate how myspace compresses mp3s so horribly. But anyway tell me what you think of it.
