I had this in my mind for years. I always loved the sound of violin but I knew it's very difficult instrument, but well... you really can't know anything until you buy one and "test" it by yourself! I always looked at web auctions waiting to find some higher quality electric violin (there's quite many bad ones... like acoustic violins as well), and then finally found one for right price. It was actually only used couple times in a demonstration occasion but otherwise was as new. It was sold at ebay by the company itself because they ditch away their older batches or used ones at ebay but this one even includes one year full warranty. The set also includes case, bow, resin, (crappy) headphones, audio cable and battery. For only 65 pounds, you really couldn't go wrong!  :-D

To me, this one that I bought, looks a lot nicer than the entirely black one:

It also sounds great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJlb7z8CCGI

I was damn right... it's one of the most difficult instruments ever! Perhaps you all know guitar. Guitar is chromatic which means that there's those metallic frets which keeps the strings at specific spot so you can hold the strings without worrying the correct placement of fingers so it's a lot easier to play for the first time. But in violin there's no frets, which means that if you hold a string one millimeter upper or lower, it's out of tune. It's all about the feeling of your fingers and their right placement since there's no even marked spots. Guitar is like the opposite of violin: With guitar you can immediately play familiar notes and chords but it require a lot of practice to learn some more complex playing methods. In violin it's opposite: The beginning is always the hardest part. But as soon as you can get the grip of the playing technique, it will get more easier to learn new and more complicated things.

In violin fingering the strings is difficult enough but then you also must hold and move the bow straight. It's much more difficult than I originally thought because it requires so much of concentration on several different aspects at the same time:

1. Hold the strings at right spots to acquire notes in tune and memorize their place
2. Using right fingers regarding to level of the fingerboard
3. When moving the bow, you must keep it straight as it makes the sound worse if it's not
4. Keep the speed of moving bow steady
5. The pressure on bow affect to the volume and tone of the strings, and you must be careful not to use too much force.

Oh right... and I am not even mentioning the Vibrato! I am not joking about that it really requires about 3 years of practice alone to learn the technique of vibrato.

Violin requires surprisingly amount of maintenance, even for being electric one. First you need to tune up the each string, then put resin into bow's hairs which creates the friction into strings, though it's required to do only few times when it wears away. Then after each time you finish playing violin, you have to wipe out all the resin away from the strings and from the body of violin. And also, if you keep violin without any use for longer than a week, you should loosen up the strings which means you have to tune them up again in next time.

Another really surprising thing about holding violin: You actually have to hold the violin only by using your shoulder and head. You can't do things like vibrato if you are using your hand to hold the violin! How the heck are you supposed to hold the strings hardly when you can't have enough counter-pressure to keep your violin on your shoulder? When you look at violinists it looks so easy... totally wrong!!!

Luckily I am not even dreaming about being classical violinist. For that I started way too late (laugh)

Instead I can enjoy the clean sound of my violin's output since it's electric like electric guitar and can have whatever effects to use with it.

Here's a few of my favourite violin songs:

Here's something that affected to me quite a lot, and specially since I have always been fascinated by stop-motion animation technique:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdwdg0_jiri-trnka-the-hand-la-mano_shortfilms

It's got very strong political message.

Also, note the impressive feature: The mouth is always static. Instead of animated mouth, the expressions are always only done by controlling angles and light positions. It's very impressive.

I have always used AGS with the option that it will send me notify to my email everytime when I receive private messages. Suddenly, it just stopped without any reasons. I tried to reset the option, re-typing my email, but no, I do not receive anything and there's nothing in spam box either to look for.

Perhaps this does not belong into here... but I must post this anyway.

Since Ghost left the AGS forum, I only now realized I never asked his email so is there anyone who possibly knows some way to contact him? If you do, please send me PM.

I even joined Ghost's "daemons in the attic" blog site but yet I haven't received any responds. I also sent PM for Bicilotti but he hasn't been online for long time.

I'm not sure to where I could have posted this topic.

I need some help. I have one piano song which is still not done into midi file. I can't read notes and for me the only way to learn piano songs is to use available midi files from internet and learn the keys from midi data by using various software.

So is there anyone would like to help me and could make midi file from sheets?

I was just wondering... to me it seems like the music from all other game making parts (graphics, animation, modeling, programming, scripting, story writing etc.) is the least active area in here forums. I feel it's so ridiculous when lookinng at members. I mean... it's so ridiculous, there are a lot of people marked as being musicians but then again there's no competitors at tune contests and everyone seems to be winning by default at this rate! Also, any topic that relates to music, get least amount of replies! I feel this is something to be worried about: A lot of passive musicians... or they just like to pretend to have titles on their profile?  :P

Well, in otherhand it's better for me: More available projects to get involved --> Profit!!!  8)

This should be wake up alarm now... Let's get going! We need more musician guys like this famous finnish artistic artist:

We have always heard string instruments, specially in movies and tv series and we all like string sounds in a form or another. About strings, I mean bowed instruments like violin, viola, cello and so on.

I still remember, long time ago, the time when I didn't like symphony music at all but loved all sort of synthesized string sounds and electronic music... But then I soon realized that to my surprise it was all about the way how they are being played, the style and genre. It was just because of the style that was annoying me and didn't offer the "my cup of tea". The real turning point was maybe the composer of LOTR trilogy; howard Shore... as soon as I saw the Fellowship of the ring, I truely realized that I really like string sounds so much.

"Wow, so beautiful music... there must be some electronic sounds. Uh, no??? Damn. How can this be, I like pure symphony music.. didn't I hate it?"

And now here I am, listening all kind of music, electronic or not...

I think it's enough about the story of mine... now let me explain the rules and the theme of the contest:

1. The main approach into contest theme is soundtrack. Each competitor must introduce us some specific story, situation or just feeling and make the song as a soundtrack for it.

2. The song that each competitor make, should have string sound(s) as essential. It does not matter whether the string(s) of the song is made purely with, covering whole song or is just the "climax" part of it. As long as the string sound is more or less the essential part of song, it's valid. Also I am not restricting the genre.

I must point out that this contest IS NOT about "who's got the most expensive, most realistic and best string samples". Any string sound is valid... it may be sampled, emulated, totally synthesized or even real acoustic instrument. I accept even synthesized "pad" sounds as strings. I am not restricting it too much. Even though if you are in a situation that you "accidently" made a great soundtrack although the strings are maybe not the main role of it, I'll accept it.

What matters in this contest is the expression of the strings and the soundtrack itself, how well it describes the images you gave us and how well the sounds sits in a mix.

As a hint, it may be easier if you would use the situation or feeling that you are experienced or familiar with and use it as an inspiration. If you want, you could tell us something from real life. Also you could introduce us, for example, a painting, a picture, a photo or even a video clip helping you for the inspiration of the story and soundtrack.

If needed, I can postpone the deadline a week maximum.

And now I am pronouncing the contest to begin. May the inspiration be with you!  ;)

As my favourite artist said: "What makes a violin is a violin player, not the violin itself"

I want to know what are you guys thinking about my creation... it can be hardly called as a "song". Maybe "soundtrack without pictures" would be better.

Originally I did this song for a game soundtrack as a new extra song but it became much greater and horrifying than I could even imagine.

I didn't add any pics or videos because I wanted to let you feel free to unleash your imagination. Just close your eyes and create your own version about the context and happenings of this "soundtrack".

So now I learned from previous topic and putted this thread only for my specific song I want you guys to review and make any comments about it.

http://www.dmelody.com/music/Other%20Creators/AnalogGuy/Untitled_Movement.mp3

This song is simply nothing else but an improvisation with my electro-acoustic piano, Yamaha CP-60M (meaning it's totally acoustic instrument with real hammers and strings but designed specially for touring, so less weight and the sound is electrically amplified with Piezo pickups, so you can plug the piano directly into speakers so no micing required! Plus other "improvements" which made it's unique and beautiful character. Sadly any similar instruments are not being made at all nowadays because they think digital piano is fine :( ). It was made in 1986 but because of poor sales, I presume less than 3000 were ever made. I used only stereo tremolo effect with piano, but otherwise it's totally "dry" sound unlike the overdubbing with rest of my synthesizers with high quality reverb.

http://www.denhaku.com/86/cp60m.jpg

So about the song, I had it for a pretty long time as is... only piano improv. But before releasing it, I wanted to overdub it for better result, and even to my own amazement, it became much much greater than I could ever imagine... I had really a truely creative moments when overdubbing it and I constantly got ideas what I could add and improve and then, finally, after 6 hours of non-stop working, I finished it and the result is really outstanding when comparing to any other music I have ever done.  :o

Well... I certainly know, my sense of rhythm is not good but as always, IMHO the atmosphere and emotions behind the music is more important than the technical context.

Anyway, as you may notice, Dualnames liked it so much he wanted me to put it into his OROW game Disquiet and then to compose the whole game.

So, if anyone could make any critic I would be pleased to hear. If nothing else, just express your opinion about the song, whatever it is positive or negative  ;)

Hi. I am just wondering because I already put this same message to the topic of offering service and there have been only couple contacts yet both were cancelled, but I feel that my topic will be buried along with all others...

So... this time I don't say I am offering but I am wanting a new project to compose music for. Are there anyone in need of soundtrack, or perhaps just something ad or little jingle of tune to make?

I am serious musician and offering my service for free, and I have no cheap software to do it. I have my own little home studio with some rare and extraordinary hardware equipment. I am also not just musician... I am also very much interested of sounds itself too... meaning that I am also sound programmer / sound editor / sound designer / sound effects maker / Ambient sound recorder / Sound experiementing or just about anything audio related!!! Let me know if someone needs my help.

when making music, for example, game soundtrack, I really want to go deep into game and even beyond that, so I could bring your project into best possible result.

I am also very emotional person so are my music too! I can create anything atmospheric music you can't even start to imagine... I always put the emotions and atmosphere of the music first.  The sounds itself does matter for me more than all theoretical stuff of the music. It's very important to keep music as humaness as possible, without computers, so in that way I can have more special human touch to my music... it makes really a huge difference!

I am so called spontaneous musician which means I do mainly everything in live... making music instantly and not exactly writing it... besides I cannot read notes  ;D

You can contact me directly with PM or e-mail. I have msn messenger too which I think would be much better since we could discuss in realtime. I can also demonstrate my music by improvising it in realtime through messenger!

Anyway to show how serious I am about making music, just take a look of my own modest gear setup:

and if you wonder what I have done so far.... not much... it's just that i do not have anything special to make, so mainly I have done just some abstract and lazy stuff. I really would like to make something better and I have much more potential but I need something special project to go deep to.

Here's my all songs which I bothered to record:

http://www.mikseri.net/artists/analogy.106176.php

And I am sure that not so many of musicians here have same quality gear at their fingertips...   ;)

I am mainly "synth-freak", maybe, but however I am very emotional person and I am also very critical to music, that i only accept "honest" and meaningful music. In other word I like music more as "cinematic", for example, instrumental New age or ambient style. Also, I am more experiemental than classical. For example, I like improvising stuff "on-the-fly" and make music instantly for specific moment.

Remember I always just improvise and so I very rarely record anything as I can do everyday something different. I just have normal poor soundcard, but I can manage with it while I am not doing any serious music production. Here is my all songs I somehow bothered to record:

http://www.mikseri.net/artists/analogy.106176.php

Please don't mind although the site is in finnish language... but just take a look into my songs as they are titled in english and there is "download" button for each song. Also the first two songs are purely made just for fun in an experiemental style, so please do not take them so seriously... but however the two other songs called "Departure of X3" and "Genesises" are more likely what I really like to do.

Remember, every song in there are spontaneous and made instantly without any preparations. And instantly is meaning that making each song takes time as long as they are! Only "Departure of X3" was after all too long (over 10 min! when improvising, I clear my mind so the least thing I could do is watching clock!) so I cutted some parts away.

I guess if someone is up to making some deep adventure or other similar game, I could make music for such a project. I am serious too. If you are needing some more extra-ordinary stuff than normal music would suite, then you might like my own "production". Please let me know

THIS POST CAN BE REMOVED. I MADE SAME TOPIC INTO SERVICE OFFER THREAD.

Hi everyone. it was hard to decide where to put this note...

So... my hobby is making music. I own pretty much of stuff, when comparing to my student budget, to make up something but I just lack inspiration of new project.

I'm going to make my own game. AGS seems to be better instead of direct programming languages.

But then... I face the big problem; I cannot make required backgrounds or any images at my own!   >:(

I still want this to be "one-man-project". I have all my own visions and I don't want others to make images for me.... unless I totally suck as a drawer and depress because of it....  but....  mainly I need make images of rooms like in this game:

http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/crimson/crimson_e.php

So... no need for stunning 3D graphic or fancy pictures.

Also, as in that game in the link, I think I'm going to make transitions between angles (1st person view) when turning into other direction. It's not primary thing... just a pictures would be fine if I'm even worse with animations.

is there any sort of program (freeware) which is designer for making rooms? I mean I do not want any programming things or special 3D designers... just a painter to make images. Or are there anything "tutorial" to paint background images?

I desperately need good advices..................  ???

Edit: I have already seen "The Big List Of Paint Programs!" topic, and I'm trying them all, but I think it's not because of the program... but because of the drawer itself!

It's same thing as about my favourite phrase of officers who have problems with computers: "There are no use of tools if you can't use them"  ;)

Hello. I'm pretty newbie with AGS... althought I'm in general computer professional and used couple programming languages, with quite unsuccess...

So about the my question: Mostly I all time see AGS games to be very much like classic sierra... with third person angle. I have great visions of my own game and AGS seems to be pretty easy compared to direct programming language. Is it possible to make adventure/puzzle games with 1st person angle... in a same way as this game in here:

http://www.fasco-csc.com/works/crimson/crimson_e.php

I need to make similar animated transitions when making movements into different directions. So is that possible too?

I want my game to be like you would be in there yourself... I mean those third person views are more likely role-playing, but in other word I need it to be in perspective like "you are in there".  Anyway, are there any similar games made already with AGS to see how it would work in practice?
