Hello everyone,

I recently wrote an article on The Dream Machine for The Independent online.

Have a read if you like - http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2011/10/10/the-cardboard-dream-machine/

And if you have the time to leave a comment on the article, please do, as it will keep it on the front page for longer, thus giving more publicity to TDM and adventure games in general. Also, spreading it across Twitter and FB is equally as good :D.

Cheers.

AGS Games in Production / Mapoco Mountain
Thu 09/07/2009 22:47:18

Info

Mapoco Mountain is the first game being developed by Law 24 Studios. It’s a 2D point and click adventure based in a fantasy world of subtle satire and brief comedy. The game also has serious undertones with a submersing storyline. Can you help Malakey discover himself? Will he conquer his greatest fears and fulfill his destiny? Or will he stay hidden in Elkwood Forest for years to come? Take Malakey on a journey and get lost in the wondrous land of Astrumn Earth.

“Down on his luck and uncertain of his future after losing his job as an apprentice clockmaker, Malakey is looking for a little adventure in his life. Whilst drowning his sorrows one night, he accidentally stumbles across something sinister. Something dangerous and corrupt. He soon discovers that his knowledge of a strange plan could endanger his own life. Has he bitten off more than he can chew? Play as Malakey, an underdog reluctantly pushed into the role of becoming a hero. Scale a fantasy world of satire and comedy, interact with weird and wonderful characters, solving puzzles and discovering hidden truths lost in history.” Cliche? Probably :).

Help Required

We need help with pretty much everything at the moment so if you feel you could seriously help this project in some way for free or a small price get in touch with me at jmann@live.co.uk. Also if you're interested in teaming up in this project or want to know more please email law.24@live.co.uk we'd be thankful for new team members.

I was going full steam ahead with this project until I was unfortunately made redundant at work so cash flow is not as great as it was, it will still get finished I'm determined but it will take longer than originally expected.

I hope to update with more screenshots soon.

Critics' Lounge / Sleepy The Zombie Kid

Hi guys, here's a NPC that helps quite a lot in the second location of my game. Before I have the sprite made I really want to give him some eyes as he just looks too scary and a bit too undead here when in fact he's a helpful young boy that wishes in vain to be a hero lol.

I've tried myself but really don't know what to do as they look out of place when I try. Any suggestions and paintovers are welcome

This is just a very rough sketch btw for the sprite artist to get a feel for what he should look like.

Critics' Lounge / Help With a Name For my Game
Mon 27/04/2009 00:58:37
I know it might sound stupid but I have been thinking for ages for a name for my adventure game and me nor anyone in the team can come up with something we all agree on. Now that it's going into production we could really do with a solid name.

I wondered if you guys could help maybe? Perhaps suggest something, I could fit nearly anything in loosely with the game if it sounds good enough lol.

The game is set in a fantasy world with hints of satire and some comedy. The main character Malakey is reluctantly pushed into the role of setting out on a crusade to become a hero so that he can prevent the corruption of the land. Sounds a bit cliche but I'd be giving the story away if I went into more detail now lol.

We're looking for a two word name preferably but it can be more or less. The only name we've liked so far is "The Night The Stars Fell" but it's to long and doesn't really have a ring to it. Other suggestions included "10% Hero" far to comedic, "Little Hero" to childish, "The Gate" doesn't feel like a fantasy name and "Astrum" doesn't really have a ring to it. We need something a little more epic lol.

Names like Golden Sun are the kind of thing we'd be looking for.

Thanks for your time I hope you can maybe help us or advise us in some way :D

Hi guys sorry if this is the wrong section I just thought I'd get more notice here, also the recruit a team thread is a little stale.

I'm in need of an additional background artist and wondered how much people would charge for backgrounds in the same style (with maybe more texture etc) as these in 1024 x 768.
I won't be able to pay a huge amount so wanted to know what kind of prices ranges there are as I know there's a lot of great artists here.

Critics' Lounge / Need help with a sketch.
Sat 11/04/2009 22:37:23
Hi guys, I was just wondering if someone could help me with a hand drawn sketch. I'm really not good at drawing (as you can see lol) but did a rough sketch of this for the main character to my game.

I had to crudely paste his head from a previous sketch because I just couldn't draw the face again how I wanted it. This is how we want him to look but the only problem is I can't seem to draw the head again with other expressions.

I was wondering if anyone could possibly do me a quick sketch of the character but with a more neurtal/happier facial expression? Or give me some tips on how to draw him more effectively (btw I know the picture is awful lol)

Hi, I was wondering if someone could maybe help me with this background please?

I need the sky to be like one smooth layer rather than so jagged as it gets darker. If anyone could help with this I'd really appreciate it.

Paint overs are more than welcome :).

Critics' Lounge / Two Backgrounds From My Game
Fri 20/03/2009 02:44:53
Hi guys, here are two backgrounds for locations in my game. I did not create these as I'm not very good at designing backgrounds etc. But I'd appreciate some feedback on them as would my friend that made them

Any constructive criticism would be appreciated :)

I have just started trying to use AGS. The tutorial is very good and I have followed it perfectly. I just got to the bit that says "Now test your game by pressing F5" and did.

Sadly it doesn't work the little man is at the top of the screen and won't move anywhere and my background is cut off at the bottom.

Here's some print screens of what I've done so far I hope someone can please help me, thanks :).

Settings

Colours

Edges

Walkable Areas

Walk behinds

Build (faulty)

And this is the original image used for the background incase this might be the problem

I'm starting to put my game into production (screenshots 1 & 2 & 3) and seeking programmers. One friend said he would do some for me but said he's going to use a program called Microsoft Visual Basic and use C++ (doesn't mean much to me lol).

Is this program any good and will I have problems say making the game with different engines if a programmer stops helping half way through etc?

I want to use AGS but will this mean I can't use it if the programmer starts in MVB?

Hi I hope this hasn't been asked before I did have a brief search and couldn't really find what I was looking for.

I'm currently at the beginning of a very large project, I'm willing to back it financially and will also consider selling it at the end to pay the contributors (which I have a huge lack of at the moment lol).
I'm going to make (well not just me lol) a 2D point and click adventure game with rich artwork and a compelling story line.

Here's a few examples of the kind of artwork I have in mind for my project

I know this is a very ambitious project and a lot of people will doubt it but I'm very motivated and will ensure that it happens eventually.
I have read quite a few threads on this forum and the community seem extremely helpful and talented and I will certainly be asking for people to join my team (I could even pay a few people for their work) on here when I have more to show about my game.

Anyway the reason I made this thread was to ask for advice on how to write the story, script and also incorporate the puzzles etc.
I started to write a brief of the story and wrote around a page of a basic outline, setting the scene, objective and main theme. But as I started to write the story in full depth I basically ended up writing a few pages of what seemed to read like a novel. This is not my aim, it will be very time consuming to write the whole storyline in this way and I'm at a loss how to write it without it reading like a book. Any advice guys?

Also I'm unsure how to write the puzzles etc into it, I'm quite new to this as you can probably tell lol.
I have played many adventure games and always wanted to make one but now I'm in a stable position to realistically produce one I'm a little confused where to start lol.

I could go on for days but I won't. If someone would be as kind as to help me out with some advice and examples I'd be very grateful.

Thanks for your time.
