Beginners' Technical Questions / Good guis?
Sat 26/12/2009 22:16:07
Can anyone recommend any gui modules that are worth checking out?
Ideally I'd like something which works just with two buttons ala broken sword- right button look, left button use/talk. But anything could is welcome for investigating.

I've been stuck on this one for months and can't figure it out (well...i was stuck on it when I went away and now I'm back am still stuck on it...similar thing).
I've got two rooms. In one I want the character to press a button and then in a completely different room a object appears.
I can handle this for a object appearing in the same room but I just can't figure out hhow to do it for a seperate room. Do I have to go through ssome sort of setting a global variable to true and checking it?

I've tried to find the answer for this everywhere but can't figure it out, dialog is just so damn hard.
I've got my dialog- the player asks another character if he can have something, the other character says yes and gives the player it.
Now. The problem is this item is also connected with a object in a certain room.

I can add the item to the inventory no problem however all attempts at making the object invisible fail drastically. I keep being told room1 is undefined and that sort of thing.

For my game I'd like to use a Broken Sword style method of selecting conversation options-
i.e. rather than giving the player the written first line that will be said instead having little pictures of the topic in question which are then selected to prompt things.
Is this possible in AGS? If so how is it done?
The dialogue screen seems to be quite restricted in just having option texts.

Hej,
I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere so I thought I'd share it. I stumbled across it the other day when searching for a example of how to do a particular sprite:

http://spritedatabase.net/

Complete sprites, backgroundss and whatnot ripped from games.
Very good for showing you how to do certain things or perhaps if you are particularly lazy you can even rip them wholesale.

Hints & Tips / Stargate Adventure trouble

I stumbled on this game and am quite excited at the prospect however it's all proving to be quite in vein so far.
My big problem is- does anyone know how to run this game?
I get the first screen before the intro no problem but then the intro is just a black screen (though with sound).
After the intro should end the black screen remains and no main menu or anything appears.

I have installed the divx codec it tells me to but still nought works.

Beginners' Technical Questions / Go bloke go!
Mon 03/08/2009 12:20:56
I'm currently trying to follow the tutorial (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/acintro1.htm)  with a background I've half done and leaving the default character in place (Despite him being smaller in scale)
I've added walkable areas and a hotspot but...nothing seems to work.

When I execute the program the default character just stands there towards the top-centre edge of my walkable area and will do nothing more. He will not walk, he will not look at the hotspot, he will do nothing.

Is there anything missing from the tutorial about actually setting characters free in the world?
Alternativly in case the character actually starts outside of the walkable area- how do you change the starting location of the PC? Ideally I'd like him to enter from the (unaccessable in game) left side of the screen.

Critics' Lounge / Beginners stuff

So, right now I'm just experimenting trying to see if its feasible for me to make a game before I actually go and do something that takes a lot of effort. A few questions though are arrising about this though.

1: Why does everything have to be so small?
Many of the AGP games are unplayable due to the tiny resolution- in a window you can't see anything and in full screen the monitor starts spewing error messages and it just looks horrid.

2: Outlines.
I made this little bloke (very crap, I know, loose pixels and unoriginal, etc....) to test animation in action.

A trouble I'm seeing though is in his trousers...they're too dark so the lines are just all blurred and there's just one big leggy blur. Lightening them things are clearer:

So what do I do for dark colours to stop them wrecking the outline?

3: Background.
What do you do for the background on characters?
Here I used green as it was unused with the man (unlike white), what is normal practice for implimenting into the game though so that just the guy is taken and not his background?

Beginners' Technical Questions / Characters

Hej all,

Sorry for such a noobish question and it being not strictly on topic of scripting but I can't find the answer anywhere (even googling) or a better place to post it.

How does one make animated sprites?
Where do you find the templates mentioned in the wiki?

I can draw my characters no problem but I've no clue on the procedure to make them actual animated figures.
(This is before adding them into the game, not related to the different direction coding)
