I really like the look of this, especially the pond scene.

I think I prefer this more colorful style for Kings Quest remakes, than the more realism angle taken by other projects.
#2
That's a nice looking SCI style background.
I think it's totally usable as-is, do more! :)

Sounds like you guys need to get Jeff Vogel on the podcast.

The latest version of your background is really pretty 32-colors style.
But weren't you trying to upgrade to 256 colors? You cancelled the gradients and softer texturing that Andail had introduced! 8-0

Yeah I was, but stepping stones...

I've fixed it up a bit with some of the suggestions given.
Still not sure what to hang in that big empty space that is the storefront yet.

Thanks guys!
I'll definitely have another go.

Tree's are my sticking point at the moment, I knew there was something a bit off about them, but now I've got a few leads to work with and some of the other feedback is helpful too.

Cheers,

Here is my latest background

I'm quite happy with the composition, but I'm interested in trying to do a paint over to make it more in the 256 color style, say like the Blackwell series.

There are a lot of remake projects that seem to paint over an original EGA background, so any tips on how to get started doing this?

PS I have a copy of photoshop and a bamboo.

Well it doesn't seem like there is much interest in this background blitz - Time's up.
Which is a shame, because I liked the theme.

Maybe there will be more interest in the next one, which I guess jwalt can choose seeing as it's the only entry.

I don't know if this qualifies as a Secret Lab? I went looking for a chair that might be suitable, and got distracted by some pictures of 1800s dental offices. At any rate, I started doing some modeling:

Definitely qualifies! Dentists can be mad geniuses too.

That's right - A Secret Lab.

It might be a room full of genetic experiments, an alchemists mixing chamber, the entrance to a military base inside of a volcano.
Or just something strange concealed in the basement. Whatever it is, it's a secret and the owner doesn't want you to know about it.

Competition runs from Oct 25 to November 10

Look forward to seeing the entries!

Well JoshuaSmyth seems to be the winner. Congratulations. Your turn to Background blitz.
And, once more, really nice entries everybody.

Cool Thanks guys! - How does this work?
Do I just make a new post with theme? Can I enter my own theme?

Good job so far. Will we see any more entries?

I hope so! I'd like to see some more entries.

I love GK, and will probably pick this up.

But I'm not sure what to think of the backgrounds. A couple of them look good, like the Crypt. But some of the others look a bit plastic-ky.

Personally I think I would have preferred a more illustration style. Something like the Preacher comic series.

Thanks guys I'll try some of your ideas out. I noticed that Sierra SCI0 uses lots of dithered shading, I might have a go pure copying some of those backgrounds for a bit to see how they do it.

UPDATE:

I tried out some of the dithering and colour changes. I think I might be mixing styles a bit much. I like dither style, but I think I need to practise it quite a bit more.

I've decided I want to improve my background drawing skills. So I have decided to start drawing 16 color backgrounds, trying to also find a style in the meantime.

A cross between sierra's SCI0 games and LucasArts EGA titles would be nice to get down.

It took me way too long to do, 4 or 5 hours? I lost track of time. Also I found the lighting quite difficult.

Here's mine

I'm trying to do 16 color backgrounds at the moment. Here is a small rock club, the kind that you might have played at if you were in a little unknown indie band or something.

It could probably do with a couple more things in the scene. Posters, bottles graffiti? or something. WIP.

Ok I felt like I really needed to do some detail work, so here's an update.  Added some details based on feedback.

Those backgrounds and portraits look gorgeous.

Can't wait to play the finale.

This game looks really cool. The Quest for Glory series is probably my favourite series of all time.
