(...)
At the moment I might only mention that not attaching game data to exe (there's an option in General Settings) improves the situation somewhat, at least when the game is run.

Thanks, I did scan acwin.exe and my game exe separately, and found no issues with them. And after clicking "allow" on Windows Defender, the game compiled again without problems.

I don't have the "attach game data to exe" choice available, since my game was made in AGS 3.4.1 and I'm using that to update it too. Switching to a newer engine version would probably mess up all the save games for current players... I'll still test the game a bit, but at least it seems to run normally, so that's good.

I'm trying to do a small update for my already released game, but I have issues compiling the game in AGS, as Windows Security interrupts it due to threats it sees in the .tmp files during the process.

The compilation errors I get in AGS:

Unable to register for Windows Game Explorer: Unable to replace resource: BeginUpdateResource failed
Unable to set EXE name/description: LoadLibrary failed

And my Windows Security protection history says:

Detected:
Trojan: Win32/Bancteian!pz
Affected items:
file: C:\Users\Valtteri\Documents\Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die\Compiled\Windows\RCX16A8.tmp
file: C:\Users\Valtteri\Documents\Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die\Compiled\Windows\RCX87E.tmp

Windows Defender also says that the threat is removed, but it repeats every time nonetheless (the names of the .tmp files change). I could try allowing the threat, but since it's a specifically named Trojan, I'd want to make sure there aren't any actual viruses there. I know AGS can sometimes cause false positives with the virus scanners, but two months ago everything was still working fine, so something's changed somewhere. How do I know if it's a real threat or not?

Doing a full virus scan on my computer doesn't find any threats. It's just those .tmp files that AGS creates while compiling the game that are problematic. Also, the game actually compiles despite the errors and it seems to run okay. But I'm not sure I want to make it available to people if it has potential virus issues.

A major update... For all the Linux users!

The heavy metal point-and-click adventure Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die! (2022) finally gets a Linux version. It was already planned with the original release, but was postponed due to Steam issues. Now, while doing other updates for the game as well, it was finally time to get the Linux version out on Itch.io - with a great discount to celebrate the joyous occasion! The version isn't available on Steam yet, but the Windows version runs on Steam Deck.

And a less major update... For all the Windows users!

There are some minor cosmetic changes and bug fixes. Go play the game, it's now better then ever!

And a sale to boot!

I mentioned the discount, but yeah, the game is also 80% off right now. That's both on Itch.io and Steam. Cheaper than a barrel of monkeys!

Quote from: heltenjon on Thu 26/01/2023 16:55:36I was especially delighted to finally find a Zappa allusion. I recommend this game to anyone who like extremely well written non pc humour and don't mind if the main character has a liberal relationship to intoxication and the well-being of others. It's definitely in my top 5 list of AGS releases last year.

I'm very happy you enjoyed the game, thanks again for all the feedback! And I'm also glad someone's picking up on the more obscure music references.

For those about to rock... I mean, to vote for games:
Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die!

Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die! is a parodic adventure inspired by classic point-and-click games, heavy metal, and underground comics. You'll jump into the beer-soaked denim vest of a middle-aged teddy bear to orchestrate the comeback of your old glam metal band, not caring that glam metal has been the laughing stock of everyone in the music industry since the 1980s. A true heavy metal heart never stops beating!

The game hasn't found a huge audience yet, but those who have played it seem to have enjoyed it a lot. The Steam user reviews are really positive, and to quote some of the game reviews out there:

"Possibly one of the best scripts in a point and click."
Vulgar Knight

"It is a modern classic and a game that must be played!"
8/10 – Movies Games and Tech

"Almost flawless."
4.5/5 – Game Reality

You probably should play the game first, if you haven't yet, to know what you're nominating. It is a full-length commercial game, however, so it costs money and requires probably 10+ hours to play through (you might still be able to get it on sale before the nominations close, just saying...). You can consider the game for whatever categories you see fit, but here are some that are nice and groovy. Make it so!

Quote from: heltenjon on Mon 23/01/2023 09:03:46My favourite character probably isn't Ted, but it comes close between Leo, the singer with an unhealthy apetite for hot dogs, the "Guy on a Date" background character that turns into a running gag through all his dates gone wrong, and my favourite: Bob Dog (whose name may be a reference to Swedish band Bob Hund?) who constantly tries to make it in the food/hot dog stand business despite all his ventures being destroyed by Ted's actions.

Thanks for the feedback, happy customers make happy developers!

It's especially interesting for me to hear about your favorite characters. Even with the 100+ characters in the game, I think Bob Dog is in my Top 2 of all the characters as well, so I guess the guy has some charm... But who wouldn't love a friendly doggy?

And I never even realized the Bob Hund connection myself, although it's such an obvious music pun! My thinking was just to make the restaurant name a one-vowel tongue twister, "Bob Dog's Nonstop Hot Dogs" (and also play around with similar jokes later). Kicking myself over that one a bit, but I'm glad I made the Bob Hund reference by accident there. All's well that ends well, as Bob Dog famously said!

And for those who haven't played the game yet, here's some shining stars to convince you! Sparkly!

That looks sweet! Very Martin Kellerman.

Thanks! The visual style has definitely been influenced by a bunch of underground comix artists.

Btw Snarky, I'm also using your speech bubble module, so just let me know if you want me to send you a Steam key for the game.

Love the style. It reminds me of the underground comics scene. Will there be some band music tracks for the gigs?

I had ambitious plans for recording an original soundtrack for the game with a proper rock band, but the COVID year has kind of delayed all the plans of rehearsing and recording with other people. But I hope I can still make it happen!

So funny!
Are you planning a saga of bears?

That might happen, I usually end up drawing bears even when I'm trying not to. For the first couple of weeks this was going to be a more serious game with human characters, but as soon as I started drawing anything it turned into slapstick comedy with cute animals.

But bears are cool, so it was probably for the best.  8-)

Nice!

Wesley Willis: Rock n Roll Will Never Die

Huh, I haven't heard that album, but should probably check it out. At least the song titles seem interesting enough!

The Story:

The game tells the story of a middle-aged teddy bear planning a comeback with his old glam rock band – in a world where glam rock has been dead and buried for decades. Experience all the fun of organizing band activities with people who have families and careers, rehearsing in moldy basements, trying to convince promoters to book your band and playing Tuesday night support gigs at empty bars for no money!

Development details:

It's a full-length game with 100+ characters and 60+ rooms with hand-drawn 1920 x 1080 pixel graphics. I've been working on it solo for almost three years now, but it's finally starting to feel like it might actually be finished one day. A couple of months of heavy testing and fixing smaller details here and there will hopefully do the trick.

- story 100%
- puzzles 100%
- graphics 95%
- scripting 95%
- music/sound 95%

Expected completion date: late 2021

I didn't experience any bugs or other issues, but here are a couple of ways in which I think you could've improved it slightly:
Yeah, those are good points. I'll definitely pay more attention to details like that when I'm working on my longer new game project, now I just couldn't wait to get my first game out there quickly.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody!

Not filename, but the project folder name! This is an undocumented "feature" in AGS Editor :), the name of exe it produces equals to the name of the game project folder.
Thanks, it should be fixed now!

Bear in Venice is a very short adventure game about a teddy bear's desire to ride a gondola.
I hesitate to call it a "real game", since it probably takes less than ten minutes to finish, but it's a completed game, so here it is.
This is my first game made with AGS, so it was a short practice project to begin with. It was a fun experience, and I'm writing a longer game at the moment.
