Messages - Nowhere Girl

Thanks a lot for the help. I didn't notice these problems. And the game does actually run in Windows 10 as well, it was corrupted, not incompatible...
Sorry. I'm a computer user who just isn't a technical expert.

Quote from: Crimson Wizard on Fri 21/03/2025 20:41:40EDIT: also, just in case, what version of AGS have you downloaded? For instance, AGS 4.0 does no longer support old games.
The one on the AGS website, why would I know where to find more? :( It says 3.6.1 - Patch 9 (zip).

I replaced the file with that version and I get another error message. :( What could be wrong?!
"ERROR: Unable to determine game data.
Engine was not able to find any compatible game data.
Searched in: [folder path]"

Yes! Yes! Yes!
While I never enjoyed typical RPGs, I love RPG adventures: "Quest for Glory", "Heroine's Quest", "Quest for Infamy", "Mage's Initiation"... (Haven't played "Hero-U", though, because I was too disappointed by it becoming 3D.)
Although if I were you, I would easily give up the polishedness of a higher resolution for faster work and more retro feel of a lower resolution.

I haven't played this game in a while and now I suddenly find myself unable to run it. I like this game so much, losing access is not an option for me. I have read that there are solutions, but none of them works.
  • One I thought about myself was Windows compatibility mode. Effect: as always, that is, it didn't work. I have never seen compatibility mode actually work.
  • The game is supposed to be supported by Scumm VM since version 2.5, I have version 2.8.1. However, when I select the game folder, I get the message: "Scumm VM didn't find any game in the specified directory!". (The exclamation mark annoys me most, as if it was supposed to be something cheerful...) I have no idea what I could be doing wrong.
  • Supposedly it can work with the following roundabout: download AGS, take the file acwin.exe, put it in the game folder and use it instead of the proper game executable. It didn't work. First I got the message: "Executing code cannot be continued, because SDL2.dll object was not found. Reinstalling the program could solve this issue". I downloaded the SDL2.dll file and placed it in the game folder too and now I get another error message: "Application was not properly launched (0xc000007b). Click OK to abort the application".
I never even wanted to use Windows 10. I resisted it for long, I gave up because otherwise my new printer coudln't even be detected and installed. And now I find myself with free time (my period just started, so I can't cycle within the next three days) and no possibility to play a game I really love...
I'm no specialist in technical issues, so it may be that there's a simple trick to make any of these methods actually work... but I can't have an idea what it might be. I could really use some help.
P.S. I don't have Virtual Box installed currently. I should, but I can't set it up by myself, and my cousin who knows technical stuff never found time for that (I wanted to play Sierra's "Take a Break! Pinball", and even on Windows XP the game runs, but paddle controls don't work, it requires an even older version)... and the the switch to Windows 10 came and, for a time, I gave up Virtual Box to save space on the (borrowed, by the way) external disk used for moving my files... Of course I could install Virtual Box right now, but I'm afraid that I might be unable to set up a working virtual Windows 7 by myself.

Please update Mastodon as frequently. I have been waiting for the reveal until I decided to check here. Some people - those who don't have accounts themselves - have been cut off from Twitter, now that back doors utilised by Nitter have been blocked...

I'm wondering how will saving work in the game: will it be possible to save at any moment, or does it include some kind of autosaving? The former would be better, it would greatly simplify exploration of possible paths and outcomes.

Will your playthroughs be available for those who couldn't or, for some reason, didn't want to watch them live?
#9
Too bad I haven't noticed it before...
Will you be looking for testers for the whole game too? Somewhere in the autumn, I think, when it's almost ready... I'd be happy to test the game then.

It's me again because I've ben playing a lot of Sokoban recently. I guess I'd be happy to have all the levels in one place, so I wanted to ask about a few things:
1. Will the game have the (very convenient) undo feature?
2. What will be the playing field size? This is really the problem I'm having with "having all the levels in one place": after I learned how to use the level editor in original Sokoban, I realised that I won't be able to copy all levels I'd like into the original game because it's only only 16 units high and 19 units wide - and level "Extra 2" is 17 units high, several levels from the "Extra" pack (which I like so much because it's the most in style of original Sokoban levels - as I said, I'm not into "tiny room with tricky crates"-type levels because yes, they can be tricky - but they lack the complexity of large levels...) are 20 units wide... so much for copying them. :(

I'm posting again because I have a question about the original Sokoban which no one has been able to effectively answer on Moby Games.
I tried to just copy my favourite extra levels into original Sokoban with the level editor. However... how to mark the starting place? The place where the player is standing at the start of the level? I copied the first of those "Extra" levels, but the player should be in the bottom right corner at the start. I get "thrown" into the middle of the map and can't solve the level from there. Can anything be done about it? It would be a little absurd if the creators of original Sokoban omitted such an important detail...
I don't like the Sokoban clones such as YASC - sophisticated graphics which are, anyway, quite ugly, and too large for my taste. Can I do something about the problem in original Sokoban or, if I can't, is there a Sokoban clone with simple pixel graphics? And without a gazillion of functions which I don't even understand...

EDIT: I have figured it out and I'll post it in case anyone else has this problem. After you place everything, move your "cursor" to an empty square without placing a storage place or box there. The editor will remember it as your starting point.

it looks fine when set to "linear interpolation". Nearest Neighbor looks terrible. :)
Ugh... and what is linear interpolation and nearest neighbour?

Not sure if relevant in this case, but 3.6.0 supports "borderless fullscreen window" mode, that makes switching in and out simplier and more stable than in regular fullscreen.
Ugh... and what is borderless fullscreen? Seriously, I've seen the term many times, but I don't know how it looks like...

I have been playing the original Sokoban a lot recently. I also know some other levels, for example from Janko.at website... but I'm not a fan of the kind of levels with a small rectangle with tricky placement of crates. That's just not very interesting. The levels I like most are those most closely in style of the original Sokoban, such as here:
https://www.janko.at/Spiele/Sokoban/ThinkingRabbitExtra.htm
I also very much enjoyed a few single crate levels:

Looks ay-may-zing.
But... 1920x1080 is my screen's resolution. Does it mean that I will be unable to efficiently play the game in windowed mode? :( Or will a slightly shrunk redolution be available as well? Remember that 1920x1080 is a lot, not everyone has such big screen...

And no travel beyond the Prohibition era? That's not very far away...
Will the 1960s, the hippie era, be available as well? If I was to travel in time, than probably there...

I've seen that you are posting updates on Twitter as well, but I can't find it. (I often check game Twitter accounts in private mode, because in Firefox the most commonly visited sites are under the URL bar - and I want some more useful sites there, such as news, online dictionary etc.) Could you post a link to your Twitter account here?

Anyway, this looks like a game with a huge replay value.

The ambivalent news - I'm not yet sure I will be releasing it for free. As I wrote above, I would like to publish a short game anthology commercially, and LitT will be part of that package. So we'll see once it's done - chances are I'll only publish an updated version of the demo and leave the rest for the commercial release. Then again, I'm excited to see people play it, so who knows, maybe I'll cave :).
I'm perpetually short on money. :( I mean really.
But maybe I could be a beta tester in exchange?

I wonder if it won't be too scaaaaaarrrryyy (I get frightened easily and have played a few horror games, but have never been able to watch a horror movie), but I love the graphics. Good old low-res pixel art - it is so much better than all this 3D...
Maybe you could also add a hint book file to the game? It's really complex, and I would like to see all the different endings...

By the way, how is "Long in the Tooth" going? I have seen that you posted a small update recently, but before there were no updates for a long time...
