Hints & Tips / Re: The long trip
Sat 29/04/2006 00:10:05
> this game already crashed so many times its not even funny anymore.

Yes, it really seems to be a problem. In fact, the game crashed from time to time during testing with that mystery "too many events posted" error, but not too often. I asked for help on this last summer, but got no answer, that solved the problem (neither here nor anywhere else) - only a lock for crosspostingÃ,  ;D

Then I found out two things about this error:
1) It only seemed to happen when accessing hotspots.
2) It happened more often on fast machines.

Because no-one could help, we added two little helpers:
1) You can adjust the game speed. If the game crashes too often, try to increase the game's speed in the system control panel inside the game (see readme.txt for details)

2) We added an auto-save function. When the games crashes, you can continue at the beginning of the scene, where the error occured (see readme.txt for details).

Just after we had uploaded the first release, we got to know, that they found out, that it's a bug inside the AGS engine...Ã,  ::) I tried to recompile with the fixed beta version of AGS, but it doesn't work without some major changes in the code... We'll bring a recompiled version within some weeks, promised - but this really takes time, as the whole beta testing has to be done once more.

In addition, we asked a guy from Texas to lecture the english version. The next release will have both updates.

By the way...: To workaround the crash, you can try to make some steps aside before you interact with something you think it's a hotspot (cp. this thread: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=25330.0

Pl. believe, that we're not really satisfied with this situation, too... esp. as it brought us votings like "very buggy"... we're working on it and everything will be good & the world will be saved!

This is indeed a problem for english speaking players, but we did not think about an english version when we started with this game and as there are only 9 possible combinations, we thought, it needn't be necessary to paint these graphics new.

Some of the puzzles contain german words games, that were not translateable and such don't seem very logically when playing the game in english.

The crashes that occur are a problem of the AGS engine, that is now fixed (s. above). I'll try to recompile the whole stuff with the new engine some day, but in first tests there occured some problems with the current version of AGS.

With the experiences of the last week and with your great help we are now able to present an updated version of The Long Trip with these changes:

* Installer now available in german and english (should autodetect the correct language).
* Fixed one minor bug in Labyrinth scene
* Fixed a bug in the end scene when using english translation.
* Updated readme.txt and liesmich.txt files with some useful information.

Although none of the bugs is "critical", we advice english speaking players to upgrade to the new version in order to be able to read the text at the end of game. Your previously saved games are still usable.

We apologize for the inconvenience! :D

Well, I surely didn't give away any solutions for sure...  :o I've sworn the HSO (Holy Solidland Oath)!  ;D

I have answered your questions by PM. There ARE some problems in the english translation, we just gave the translation source file to an american german teacher, who now lectures it into good texas english  ;D

Hallelujah!

Do you know HOW MANY hours I searched for this f*cking bug last summer!?   :-\ All answers here and otherwhere didn't help a dime... for that reason we decided to implement the AutoSave function...  :)

Well, noone knows what hapens, if a software crashes. Nevertheless, The Long Trip saves all relevant game data. When the game ends with an error message (did you write down the error text? This could help us to debug), the next time you start over, there should have a message box appeared, where you could choose to restart or continue in the scene where the error occured (cp. readme.txt file in the game's system folder).

If you got a new number, this number definitily should work (just tested it). Maybe you didn't note it right). If the problem persists, pl. send me your savegame.xxx files to dusty@solidland.nl - this could also help for debug.

Thank you for playing The Long Trip!

Yours,
Dusty

I just downloaded this file......then comes up some kind of agreement? in German...... I must have chose the wrong one because it never completed the download.Ã,  Please specify to the english players which key to press.Ã,  Ã,  left or right one

The right one, labelled "Annehmen" ("accept"). I'm sorry, but german law forces us to ask for accepting the agreement. In the next screens choose "Weiter >" ("Next") and then "Installieren" ("install").

We announce the release of "The Long Trip" (cp. "complete games announcements"). The game is available both in german and in english language.

As we are still working on a speech pack, we'd like to keep this thread open.

Completed Game Announcements / The Long Trip
Mon 17/04/2006 19:25:52
We announce the release of our first AGS project

Written: Feb., 24th 2004 - Apr., 17th 2006
Languages: german, with english translation file
Sprites: 1009
Views: 77
Items: 33
Characters: 17
Rooms: 43

To play, please download from the download section at http://www.solidland.nl and doubleclick the file to start the installation process.

Additional information for english speaking players:
Please take the time and read the readme.txt file in the game's installation folder. The game ist set to german language by default, for the english translation, please use the AGS winsetup.exe file to switch. If you choosed "create program menu entries" during installation (in fact, the software asks this in german, but it's on by default, so don't bother), you can easily do so by clicking START->Programs->Solidland->The Long Trip->Setup).

Additional information for german speaking players:
Please take the time an read the liesmich.txt file in the game's installation folder. We are currently working on a german speech pack, a demo version is downloadable in the download section of our website.

Three final marks, that came to our minds after having finished the upload (will be written in the next version of the ReadMe-files):

(1) If you are english speaking only and don't have the speech pack installed, you might be unsure, what the game's goal is. We think, that's not a big problem - if it is, pl. tell us.
(2) All test players complained, that there are no hotspot marks in the game. Well, it might be a problem in the very beginning, but pl. believe, we had good reasons.
(3) If it is not obvious, where to exit a scene, the cursor turns into an arrow when in walk mode.
Please feel free to (also) use the forum on our webpage for any comments and suggestions.

The official test period has now ended. As there were no more major bugs reported and our lawyers also gave their okays, we're now finishing the website and then let you know. English script translation is in work, too. Until then, the website is closed. Please stand by!

Just a short notification to the test players:

The latest download is available under the "unofficial" link. This is our first release candidate. Now we need your feedback. As soon as the reports are here, I'll compile a second release candidate and well, then let's see!

Next steps for us are programming the website and translating it all into english. After that we continue with part II and continue working on part I's german speech pack.

PS:
If there are any more german speaking test players out there, give me a sign, pl.! :)

AGS Games in Production / New game statistics
Mon 09/01/2006 00:45:35
For those who are interested in... the game now consists of

1961 lines of code in the global script
1007 sprites
77 views
32 items
17 characters
41 rooms

The last major changes (website not updated yet): AutoSave  and restore function, help function, and a new debug function for the test players.

#14
I just added an auto-save routine to our AGS game in production. It's quite easy if you use the SaveGameSlot()-command. If you fear a short "hung" on complex games, you might add a choice button in the options menu of your game or s.th. like that, if auto-save is on or off.

In our game it's on my old Athlon A-1000 with 512MB RAM no problem (the game consists right now of 1,961 lines of code in the global script and contains 1,007 sprites, 77 views, 32 items, 17 characters and 41 rooms -- just to help you giving you at least  very small idea of what time it might take).

Thank you for your kind replies. It motivates to go on in that way!  :)

Concerning the questions of translation into english, I have to admit, that we decided to finish the german version first. There is a lot of speech in the game and time is running so very fast...! Nevertheless, I'd really like to have an english version (probably without speech) - we'll see.

#16
Once again just a short notify, that we're busily adding speech to the game. The Long Trip official homepage www.solidland.nl will not be updated any more until the game is finished... we're simply running out of time... :)
#17
Just a short notify that the german version is now in it's ending phase and will be finished around the end of the year.

Whenever you click the mouse or press a key, AGS logs an internal "event". There are also some other things that cause an event to be logged, such as changing room, standing on a hotspot and activating a GUI control.
Hmm, so I should find out, when such an event is caught. But...: If you are in blocking function and click more than 15 times an object or so, the error would occur, wouldn't it?

Quote
Was there absoultely nothing in common between the two problems? The same GUI wasn't be used, by any chance?
Hmm... the first time, the error was reported to me, it was when interacting a hotspot in room 19 (or so), and the 2nd time was when looking at a hotspot in room 2. both rooms are scrolling (1600x600) rooms, but only one of them with a huge repeatedly_execute script.

Quote
Both of these are quite obscure situations though, and I doubt it'd be either.
I can exclude both possibilities, in fact.

Quote
Is it fairly easy to reproduce the problem, or do you have to play for a while before it happens?
No, I never was able to reproduce this situation, although I got quite good descriptions like "it occured, when I wanted to look at the lower window outside the jail".

The game always runs fine here. Might it be, that it has s.th. to do with an occasionally executed ChangeCharacterView command in the global repeatedly_execute script?

Two of our test players encountered an "too many events posted" error in completely different situations and rooms of the game. In both cases, I was unable to reproduce this error message, also the search function here didn't give me any hints - neither the same topic in the "beginners tehcnical help" forum.

When does this error occur and what does it mean (in general)??
