True... in a way.

Woops! :o

Sorry Geoffkhan, but at the moment I'm only connecting on weekends ('cos it's cheapper, andÃ,  now that I'm living alone I can't spend too much...).
Anyway, I don't know if SpacePirate sent you any invitations already, but as he said sometimes orkut server is down... so I'll try to log in now and send you one as soon as possible.

Also, if I've forgotten to send someone's invitation do tell me so that I do it ;)

Ginny,  Highwaygal and Petteri: Done ;)

I'd like to remind all of you that are orkut members already that I've created a community for AGS where we can meet and discuss anything related (or not) to the AGS World.

blackbird & Haddas: Invitations sent ;)

Snarky: Well, it says in the site that it's just an independent project by a Google engineer, but of course there's Google staff working on it!
And what's the big deal with Google, anyway? Is it that bad if it's related to it?

Back to orkut itself, I did some searches and found other AGS users that are from the "orkut family" too (like Chrille, Helm, remixor and even Yahtzee) so I was wondering... who else from the AGS community is an orkut member?

Well, it wasn't forgotten at all! ::)

c lex and Babar: Sent you the invitations already.

Hotspot: I need your name and surname to send you the invitation ::)

Kinoko: I might have expressed myself wrongly there, becoming "friends with famous people" isn't the main goal of orkut - I just mentioned these names because I thought you'd find it interesting - the main "feature" of orkut are the communities. You have a community for almost everything you can imagine: Sports, Women, Computers, Movies, Games, etc.
Talking about the "computer related" ones, there are for programmers of all languages (and even specifically for game programmers) where you can discuss with people from the "field" about the subject and even know "wannabes" that are going through the same you are, and you have much to learn with each other.
Have a problem to solve? Want to team up for making a game? Wanna learn with those who've made it? Whatever you wish, your problem is likely to be solven with orkut ;)

Hey Chris, from the bottom of the orkut page:

Quotein affiliation with Google
It is indeed "affiliated" with Google but that's because the guy who developed it (Orkut Buyukkokten) is a Google engineer; however, it also says that "it was created as an independent project and is not part of the Google product portfolio. "

QuoteName: juncmodule
Email: junc (AT) juncmodule.com
Eh... when I said "name" I meant real name, since it's not a community based on "nicks" but on real persons; so just tell me your name and I'll send you an invitation ASAP ;)

QuoteI find these "online communities" interesting. I also think it's a pretty good way to promote my music. I'm on Live Journal and just signed up for MySpace.com, so why not another...
Apart from the "close knit community thing" this is one of the best things of orkut - it has a community for almost everything you can imagine (and if it doesn't exist you can invent it).
There are communities for programmers of all languages, on which they discuss many subjects.

There are also many "famous" persons in orkut - from the game programming world, for example - like Geoff Howland, Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, Will Wright, Tom Hall, Jordan Mechner, Mark Deloura and many others!
orkut gives you the opportunity to talk with this "game-programming icons" and even become their friend (litteraly).

And look who I just found that's also an orkut member (Mr. Chris Remo): http://images.orkut.com/images1/medium/961/212961.jpg

I also found a "Gilbert Cheung" - is that you, Gilbot?

Anyway, as you can see, thanks to orkut you can get "inside the computer game industry" and see how all these "legends" are nothing but real persons... just like all of us (ok, maybe not all of us)

OK, orkut keeps saying that it needs to extend its community and we should invite new "friends" to join so I sent you guys an invitation (except to you, Mr Fribble - I couldn't find your e-mail) Congratulations - you're now members of the "orkut family" ;)

Quote from: Pumaman on Sat 18/09/2004 22:34:33
Sorry, but it kinda stinks of gmail to me... you have to "invite" people in order for them to create some PR, and you have no idea of what the site provides before signing up.

I may be totally wrong though, so feel free to slap me about a bit.

* Felipe slaps Pumaman with a large trout
Hah, I couldn't miss the opportunity!

Anyway, CJ, I think that this thing of "invinting" - for this particular case - was a great idea...
There was this "theory" I've heard of that everyone is somehow "connected" to everyone else in the World through a maximum of "six levels"; this means that we could pick someone in the US and someone else in Egipt and this two would have a friend of friend of friend (...) in common... it's hard to explai... got what I mean?
There was also this story (that I think it actually happened) that a man in the United States had this idea and sent a letter to a friend of his, and told him to write his name, where he was from, and give it to another friend - which should do the same - and so on... and this letter happened to travel all around the country and ended back to the first guy...
It's more or less like this with orkut - that's why I like the way it is... with you having to be invited to join... so that everyone in orkut is related, in a way.

So, to keep the community growing, if anyone else wants to join orkut or wants to know more things about it just tell me your name and e-mail ;)

Cheers

General Discussion / Concerning AGS and ORKUT
Sat 18/09/2004 19:21:51
Well, first of all I'd like to congratulate AGS for it's 5th birthday - yeah, that's it - the 8th World Wonder is making 5 years of existance today!

Now, I'd also like to inform that to celebrate this special date, and also to have a new place to meet and discuss with AGS members I've created a community for AGS at orkut.

For those of you who don't know what Orkut is, here's what says at orkut's About page:

"orkut is an online community website designed for friends. The main goal of our service is to make your social life, and that of your friends, more active and stimulating. orkut's social network can help you both maintain existing relationships and establish new ones by reaching out to people you've never met before. Who you interact with is entirely up to you. Before getting to know an orkut member, you can even see how they're connecting to you through the friends network.

orkut makes it easy to find people who share your hobbies and interests, look for romantic connections or establish new business contacts. You can also create and join a wide variety of online communities to discuss current events, reconnect with old college buddies or even exchange cookies recipes(...)"

The interesting thing is that you can't just "Join" orkut - you have to be invited by someone who's already a member, this means that the 1714977 orkut members (at this moment) are somehow connected with each other through their friends and friends of friends...

For the record: orkut is named for the Google engineer who developed it, Orkut Buyukkokten. (Orkut is easier to spell and pronounce than Buyukkokten.)

Anyway, how many of you are orkut members?

And once again: Happy Birthday, AGS!

Did anyone see the mens marathon, where the leader was bundled into the crowd by some idiot and finished off in second place

I'd say the security during this Olimpcs was great... if it wasn't for what happened during the men's marathon.

Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima was leading the marathon when this idiot came and grabbed him. He lost precious seconds, but worst than that and the "phisical damage" was the "psycological damage". He still managed to get back to the proof and ended up in 3rd place.

The Brazilian Olimpic Comitee expected some kind of "recompensation" for that, and now he'll receive a medal in honour for what he's done... a medal last (and only, if I'm not mistaken) given in 1988.
I think the best thing to do in that moment was to stop the marathon and have it again the other day or two days after.

Anyway, about the idiot who grabbed him, I'm pretty sure most of you remember him, it's an ex-priest from Ireland - named Cornelius Horan - the same that entered in the midle of the track during the GP of Silverstone with posters and wearing a skilt... remember that?
Well, I don't know what you guys think, but in my opinion people like him should be in a mental asylum!

I'm not trying to say that Vanderlei would have won (I'm not saying he wouldn't, either - that's something we'll never know) but I think special actions should be taken...

General Discussion / Re: Favorite Movies
Sun 08/08/2004 21:29:30
I don't have A favourite movie, but below are some of the films I liked the most (in no particular order):

- Matrix (The whole trilogy, but specially the 1st)
- American History X
- A.I (although I saw it just once - a few years ago - I chosse it as one of my favourites for the "effect" it caused on me... can't wait to see it again)
- Gladiator
- Cidade de Deus (not because I'm Brazilian, but it actually is one of my favourites; if you hadn't seen it yet - do it!)

And, as Peffy, I'm a Tarantino fan too, so I also love:
- Reservoir Dogs (everytime I hear Stuck in the middle with you I remember the classic "Mr. Blonde-ear-cut scene")
- Pulp Fiction (Ha! Vicent and Jules rock! Again, imagine which film I remember while hearing Misirlou)
- Kill Bill (I just HAD TO download Nancy Sinatras' Bang, Bang when I came home after seeing it for the second time... Can't wait to see Vol. 2... though I have too wait till October :'( )

It's being a while since I last saw Jackie Brown and I don't remember much of it, so I didn't include it in my list.

For the record: I've been using co.nr as a redirections service for my site (www.garage.co.nr) for the last 3-4weeks.

They don't have pop-ups nor anoying banners...
It's seems really good to me, no complaints so far.

Who wouldn't remember those? (for different reasons, of course)
About 2ma2: He might not have logged in during the last 10 months, but I remember him posting as "2ma2-unplugged" or other nicks like that)

About Maria:
I haven't heard from her in a while (more than a year now) but seems like she had to attend to some exams (those I'm studying for ATM).

About Scummbuddy:
As Czar said already, he went off for a 2-week-trip to New Mexico

General Discussion / Re: Euro 2004
Sat 10/07/2004 23:50:36
Well, just now I had time to post here...

Congratulations to all you greeks for the championship! ;)

The thing is, I watched Portugal's last matches and must admit I felt like it was my own country playing (not only because of the cultural similarities, but also (and mainly) because of "Felipão" who is from a city near the one I'm living now and was also the coach of my team - Grêmio).

So you can imagine how exciting it was the match against England and how sad I felt after the final... ::)

But, anyway, as I said: Congrats to y'all Greeks out there!

OFF_TOPIC:
Speaking of Greeks, could any of you clear THIS out to me? (see the last post)
I found it really interesting when I saw the names of the greek players and wanted to know whether it's just a coincidence or not...

Ryukage:
QuoteBTW, in that episode they said that language spoken in Brasil is Portugese, not Spanish.  Is that true?  Every Brasillian I've ever seen on TV has appeared to be speaking Spanish, though I can't swear I'd be able to tell the difference.
As already said: NO - It's not true. We speak PORTUGUESE here.
But it's nice that you've mentioned it 'cos I've heard this before (and couldn't believe it!)
The problem is that in most films, when somewhere is supposed to be Brazil people usually talk in spanish (with a few -rares- exceptions). This is because the directors say: "WTF, the won't know the difference so just put 'em talking in spanish"
The thing is there are MANY differences.

QuoteA Mexican friend of mine who speaks both Spanish and Portugese told me that Portugese is basically Spanish with a wierd accent, which seems to be backed up by a multilingual dictionary I have.
Well, tell your friend he's totally wrong!
As I said before there are many differences between Portuguese and Spanish.
Not only in the pronunciation but we even have different letters! (Like, in portuguese we have 'ç' and many acents like ' ~ ^ ` and in Spanish they have ñ ll and y that do not exist in Portuguese)

Primus:
QuoteAntónio Noivo Cueca had to remove "Cueca" from the phone list as calls making fun of his name were driving him crazy...
Hehe
This made me remember this joke we have about a portuguese that was called Joaquim Bosta, and he was fed up of people making fun of his name so he decided to change it. When asked what name he'd like to change to he said:
- "Ah... pode ser Manuel Bosta, mesmo." ;D

QuoteWe've also a special group we have most jokes: "Alentejanos".
I did notice you have a LOT of them... but what would "alentejanos" be?
It'd be much funnier if only I knew what you mean with it!

About the jokes about Brazilians:
Well, most of the jokes I saw there, are told here, but with Portuguese when it says Brazilian.
So... the thing is who made fun of who first?

Anyway, we have MANY more jokes about you (Portugueses) than I noticed you have from us...
Just google "piadas portugues" and check it out...!

Now, I'd like to know from you greeks:
Does EVERY greek name end with 's'?
I was looking the names of the football team the other day (Nikopolidis, Seitaridis, Dellas, Kapsis, Fyssas, Venetidis; Zagorakis, Katsouranis, Karagounis, Tsiartas, Giannakopoulos, Nikolaidis, Charisteas and Vryzas); and also others I know, like Socrates, Aristoteles, Spyros Soldatos, Telemachus Stavropoulos, Antonis Vavayannis...
Does that mean something or is it just an ENORMOUS COINCIDENCE?

Quote from: Primus on Wed 23/06/2004 20:05:59
Brasil (ok, without z, I didn't kown how you hated it with a z) is our bro country!
I don't hate it!
I said SOME PEOPLE don't like it.
But in my post (and all my posts I recall) I wrote it with 'z' (Brazil) because I know that's how you write it in english (although, when I'm writing in portuguese I write it with 's').
I can't say I love seeing it written in that way... I just don't mind.
It'd be like we having to say "Switzerland" (or whatever) instead of "Suíça" just because it's the way they write there.
So, don't worry - I really don't mind it! ;)

QuoteWhat's that about monkeys anyway?!
Well, some countries (specially our neighbours Uruguay and Argentina) call us "Monkeys" when they try to "offend" us - I really don't know the reason of that, nor why (and when) it started.
I also heard that in one od the episodes of The Simpsons, when they come to Brazil (I think it's called "Blame it on Lisa") they make fun of us (brazilians) and make some monkey-related jokes... but I can't say anything about this since I haven't seen it...

QuoteI hate [codfish] except maybeÃ,  "punhetas de bacalhau" - when you stop laughing, pls keep reading on
LOL
It's quite funny, actually! ;D
For those who are not understanding "punheta" (at least here, in Brazil) means "to jerk off", "to wank" (sp?) ... (it's the slang of "masturbation")

QuoteNow the guilty for alotta different names were due to your "soaps", as many people put names got from Brasilian "telenovelas" to their kids. True!
Dude, that's interesting!
For you guys that've never seen a Brazilian soap-opera: DO IT!
(Most of them) are great!
I'd say we have the best soap-operas in the world (and they are NOT like those "Mexican soaps" with a poor girl that loses her son when he's just born, then she falls in love with someone she shouldn't -that's commited- and years later her son reapears bla bla bla...)

Just one last questions for you Portugueses:
Here, there are many jokes about 'Portugueses', that make fun of "you" (saying Portugueses are dumb).
This doesn't mean we don't like you, guys, it's just part of the 'humour here' (In Uruguay they make the exact same jokes but instead of "Portugueses" they say "Gallegos").
I don't know how this started (if it was because one of your kings - Dom João VI, probably - wasn't THAT bright or if it's related to the Basques...)
Anyway, my question is: Are you aware of this? And do you make jokes about we - Brazilians - too?

Quotesoccer is gay and crap and should be banned.
OMG WTF STFU U N00B!11111@@@@@!!11 ;D

Hehe - seriously - why do you hate soccer??

QuoteTo Felipe (didn't see your post earlier): No.
Er..
With 'No' you meant you don't see "armed men on the streets EVERYDAY" or that you don't see them AT ALL?

About the subject of eating rabbits... that's quite new for me!
We have them as pets here!
Although, as Primus said, some people eat "Lebres" (but that's not very common, either)
