Great, thank you!

Edit: Okay, got it working now. Thanks again!

The editor recognises the file and begins the Import Old Game Wizard, but can't progress as "this game is from an unsupported version of AGS, This editor can only import games saved with AGS 2.72". When opening the file, the filetype selection box lists .agf files (for AGS 3.0+ games) or .dta files (for AGS 2.72 games). My file predates 2.72, but I don't know what AGS release was current in 2006!

Hello folks,

So, I abandoned progress on my game in 2006, but now I have a sprog who is sort of interested in seeing the game that Daddy tried to make once. As am I. The current AGS Editor, naturally, spat out my neanderthal ac2game.dta file.

I wish to know, O Wise Sages of Know-How:

1. Is there an AGS Editor archive that goes back further than 3.0?
2. If so, which stepping-stone versions do I require to update the file to a format the spangly current version can read?
3. Do the current-generation forum membership even know what this := represents??

Thanks for your kind attentions, and for not wiping my old user account for some reason!

Cheers,
Nellie.

Yes it did, thank you.  :)

I really liked She's waiting in the Attic and I did have 30 big-one's lying around. So I bought it.

Which was very lucky, as I only pop in to see the community once every couple of months or so. Good timing on the thread!

One thing I remember is that amid clamorous anticipation Chris suddenly sprung the finished Windows editor on us, having told us for weeks that it was still far from completion.

This was shortly followed by a thread complaining about the new Windows editor, because it was too unfamiliar for some people and they preferred RoomEdit.

I'm lookin' at you, M0ds. ;D

There's a direct link to Stratego: Legends in Boardgamegeek:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/484

which also has this review by one of the more experienced boardgamers there:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/27603

(BGG is a very, very good site if you have even the remotest interest in board and card games).

I've played a bit of Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (link)which is essentially Stratego: Legends with fewer pieces and a well-fitted theme.Ã,  I really enjoyed it, so providing the special abilities of the pieces in S:L are well-balanced, it should be a pretty good game.

In other news, I stumbled across Stratego: Legends on BGG earlier today, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of it.Ã,  Then I wander over to the AGS forums for the first time in a week and there's a blimmin' thread about it.Ã,  I now claim this to be the greatest coincidence ever to have occured to me in my entire life.Ã,  Thank you.

Man, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 looks superb.  For the first time one of these games is going to have a coaster cam that genuinely gives you a sense of speed and disorientation.  I hated the cams in Theme Park World and that naff Disney roller coaster builder thing.

I just know when I eventually get the game I'll be downloading everybody else's rollercoasters and 'riding' them for kicks.

By the way, if you rename one of the TutorialX.dat files to 'Demo.dat' and put it in the main installation folder, you can play on the tutorial maps (ie, completely empty landscape) for 45 minutes rather than the demo map, plus you get unlimited funds.  But remember to backup your original 'Demo.dat' file somewhere.

QuantumRich: Thanks! :=

Andail: Yeah, the Sims seems to have a contradictory dual purpose.  On the one hand, the designers claim it's good for 'sandbox' (freedom to do what you like) play, while on the other, they put in quite a strict system of needs that require you to make all of your sims pursue the same type of activities to prevent them being screwed up.

QuoteI guess you're expected to hit off with your neighbours, select a girl and start trying to pick her up. If you're not interested in that, the game will be rather empty of meaning, right?

The game is empty of meaning by default, really, and the point is to make of it what you want.  For example, the appeal to me is to create some unusual characters in a neighbourhood, get them to interact, then improvise a story for them all in storytelling mode.  The very first time I tried to play the Sims (original), I went the ordinary route of: go to work, get the girl, meet the neighbours, etc. and it bored the hell out of me.  Now the 'purpose' of the game for me is to create some strange soap-opera/sitcom hybrid in storytelling mode, and hopefully entertain my friends and a few random strangers on the 'net.  :)

Any chance you could tell any of us members who rarely use IRC what this radio thingy's all about and how to listen to it?Ã,  I'd be interested to hear it.

But yeah, AGA's music is terrible.

QuoteHas anyone found that it messes with your internet settings?

Pelican: YES!Ã,  I have no idea why it does that, but it's extraordinarily irritating.Ã,  I hadn't linked the IE screw up to the Sims yet, so thanks for pointing out the cause for me.Ã,  I assumed I'd fixed the problem with IE, but now I know it's because I haven't played the game for the past couple of days. :P

And how about some links to people's stories on the Exchange, if they've done any?Ã,  Here's one for y'all:

There is one important consequence of allowing the player to choose to do any action they like with the player character - the game writer is no longer able to define the personality of the player character.

Which is fine if that's what you want - RPGs are built around the idea of players defining their own character's personality.  But before anyone starts thinking along the lines of "limiting player freedom = bad game design" (which nobody has expressed yet, so this is a pre-empting note), remember that this would mean you couldn't write a fully fleshed out personality for your main character, and the character eventually defined by the player would come out in pretty broad strokes, unless you write a large amount of subtle decisions for the player to encounter (as possibly Fallout does, though I haven't played it yet so I don't know).

QuoteRAARGHBLARGHGRRRPaulaRadcliffeSNARFGAHHBLARRR!!!

So is that sympathy or scorn, Chris?

Maybe I'm just a big softie, but I have almost the exact opposite opinion.Ã,  15 other women dropped out of that marathon (and they were all going at a less punishing pace than she was), and 22(!) men dropped out of yesterday's marathon.Ã,  Unless we're going to harshly criticise 37 Olympic-class athletes for not finishing the marathon too, Radcliffe definitely deserves sympathy there.

As for the 10k meters, it was disappointing that she didn't finish, but I guess she was going for glory or bust.Ã,  And having seen how devastated she was in the marathon (and appreciating that her body hadn't had time to recover), I can't bring myself to think she did anything terrible by stepping off the track when she couldn't keep up the pace.Ã,  It's not like a kitten explodes whenever an athlete drops out of a race.

But, Chris, knowing you as someone on the forum who is slow to criticise, and quick to forgive, and having seen you step into a few threads where you felt someone was being unfairly criticised, reading your rant against Radcliffe was a pretty funny shock for me.

Quick note about the 'Manhunt' killing:

It was the victim's mother who claimed the killer was obsessed with Manhunt, having heard as such from his friends.  Since then it's been discovered that the killer didn't even own a copy of the game.  But the victim did.  ::)

Violent games as satire:

I think it's inaccurate to suggest that people who complain about violence in some games are missing the point because the game is using violence to make a point.  Sure, GTA3 may be satirising violence in society, but it is also making sure that the virtual violence you participate in is a lot of fun, and that's the issue that sticks in people's throats.  For those people, the standby: it's not real/it's for adults/etc arguments are probably better.  :)

He still hangs around the Underdogs forums, unless that's entirely an entirely different Scid entirely.
