The Rumpus Room / Re: Icey games' thread

This thread made me return to the forums, it's true.

... it's still a good thread, though.

Yeah, I'm not letting you forget about this old shame. (Seriously though, I don't know if I ever thanked you properly, so... thanks. If anything, my art skills have gotten worse in the intervening years.)

Hi! Remember this game? Well, you probably don't, and neither did I, but I found a mostly-finished version of this going through an old backup of mine, and figured I might as well fix it up real quick and put it online. I mean, I'm never going to be able to go back to this anyway, and this way, it can at least serve as a cautionary tale. Without further ado, here is

Corner's Shiny (2013 edition)

* Overthrow capitalism by gathering mail and running through surreal urban environments really quickly!
* Climb ladders, jump gaps and... generally jump a lot!
* Experience an all-new, thrilling storyline with an unexpected twist!

Corner's Shiny is a 2008/2009-era 2D platformer that was originally created as a "bootleg demake" of the then-upcoming MIRROR'S EDGE. It was an entry for the TIGSource Bootleg Demakes Competition, created by BaronCid and Akatosh (i. e. myself).

It's a fairly straightforward game: Using a wide array of moves, including running, sliding, (wall-)jumping, climbing and more, you have to travel through the levels as fast as possible in your quest to aid the People's Revolution! and, much more important, to gather a high score. The game's unique feature (... which kinda got chopped off in the screenshot ...) is the "momentum gauge" at the top of the screen. While you're running, it starts to fill up. The further it gets to the right end, the more moves you'll be able to execute - for example, you can't slide while in the blue region of the gauge.

A little more backstory: Originally conceived as a "glitch platformer" of a sort, the idea was that you'd have to use your wits as much as your reflexes to get through the game - it would be intentionally, horribly buggy and allow for lots and lots of dirty tricks and shortcuts. Unfortunately, this didn't really work out. (Or rather, falling through the floor turned out to be slightly funny the first time, and not funny at all the subsequent 48 times.) The original version was pulled for that reason, and I put the game back in the shop, so to speak; just about everything was overhauled, including the graphics. (Thanks again for the sprites, Ben.) However, as that was right around the time I started university, I never did get around to fixing the game. Still, you might be able to glean some of the basic idea from the game, and it's finally in a playable state now. Anyway, enjoy! (Hopefully.)

Download link: Corner's Shiny, as close to complete as it's ever going to get

(And no, the walljumps still don't work properly. := But they no longer require frame-perfect timing, so that ought to be okay, right?)

Had a chance to play it now. Good fun! I've experienced the same bug as dkh in that every victory seems to count as Warmonger victory (which may very well be a little hint on the game's part :=), but otherwise, it's all nice and polished.

I'd like to chime in with what the much wiser posters above me said, in that some customisation would be nice. Unfortunately, Hubris inherits Arcomage's flaws, such as they were; there's not all that much strategic depth, ressource management becomes a total non-issue after the first 10 turns or so (because only a handful of cards even have costs in the double-digit range) and you're more or less at the mercy of the Random Number God. If you're willing to move away a little from the basic game, this might be a few areas that could be improved (post-MAGS). Otherwise, it's a pretty great remake and I've had a lot of fun before noticing that whoops, it's midnight.

Arcomage! Back in my distant youth, I borrowed Might and Magic VIII from a friend and refused to give it back for months just so I could play that minigame. I'm going to play the hell out of this as soon as I get the opportunity.

You also may want to consider using multidimensional arrays to make work a little easier.

Pointer is actually another special case, if I recall correctly. What you could do instead is insert something like

Code: ags

mouse.Mode = eModeInteract;

into the room script. Right-click on the room, select "Edit Room", switch to the "Events" pane, select "Enters room before fade-in" (or after fade-in, doesn't really matter), click on the little button. You should be greeted with a window containing a function called room_Load(); paste the above into that function and save. That should be it.

(If you want, you can make the Interact cursor temporarily look like the pointer; just add an appropiate line after setting the mouse mode. If you do, remember to change it back before the player leaves the room!)
#8
Did you make sure the cursor mode isn't set to Walk? I haven't tangled with AGS in years, but I seem to recall that the AnyClick event doesn't actually fire on any click.

That aside, I see no reason the second one shouldn't work.

I was honestly expecting to see the maid catgirl again.

... why, no, I have nothing constructive to say.

Count another one for Atelier.

There are some good things to redoing SW films, I like how they added more houses on Tattoine, ekstra creatures, better lasers etc., but they clearly showed they don't know when to stop, Han shoots first phenomena being the obvious one and the lightsabers changes being another.

This, a thousand times. Seriously, Star Wars is over. This constant tinkering and re-re-re-re-redoing is just... undignified. Yeah, the original versions can't compete with modern movies on terms of special effects, but... so what? These are old movies. They have a right to look old.

General Discussion / Re: Talk to Me

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that, Baron. My grandparents' dog died last month, and while I don't have nearly as many happy memories of old Lissie (short for Lieselotte von Saaletal; the breeder had a thing for ridiculous names) as you have of Sheppers, I can imagine what you feel like. Here's to loyal companions.

As for music, I've mostly been listening to weird contemplative stuff lately. You know, stuff by bands with such descriptive names as "The Crüxshadows" or "Auto-Auto" or "Absurd Minds".

It's just that kind of time in my life, I guess. I've finally gotten my studies back on track; I really fucked up early on and had to struggle to get everything back in line. Doesn't help that I've had to grapple with the usual young adult questions in the meantime. Cost me the last vestiges of my faith, but I think I've gotten the important things resolved for now. Oh, and I think some education also happened. Anyway, if everything goes according to plan, I'll graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business Informatics next semester; I already have a thesis topic and everything . It's a strange thought; I'll have to learn to pretend to be a responsible adult. Heck, I'll have to make future plans.

But yeah, that's it for me. I'm pretty much still the same guy, just older. Christ, I can't believe you people actually put up with me, I used to be a moron. (I still am, but in subtler ways.) Apologies for the text wall.

(Might as well give it a go. Here goes nothin'.)

Coffee: A Tale of Marketing

Darkness fell hours ago. If you looked up, you could see the stars; very little light pollution, you see. Local trade capital or not, the city wouldn't even qualify for its own area code on Earth.

A small crowd has gathered in Wolfram Memorial Square, but they aren't here to stargaze. Yes, yes, the stars are pretty, sure, but it's almost time for - ah. A small child excitedly waves her parents over, and the crowd huddles together in front of a Trisense billboard.

------------------------------------------------------

"Another of THESE days. "

The screen shows the inside of a fairly unremarkable house, or at least some marketing executive's impression thereof. A man in brand-new overalls appears and drops into a comfortable seat. He seems dishevelled, but in a cultivated and well-groomed way. The same can be said for his accent; you really expect him to finish that sentence with "...at the office". Instead, he produces a heavy sigh and begins voicing some marketing executive's impression of typical colonial problems.

"Our request for a new water purifier was denied - again! I swear, this place has WORSE red tape than Earth! Is that the simpler life we were promised?"

Some in the crowd chuckle, but they are quickly silenced by hostile glares from the more experienced viewers - ssh, it's about to get to the good parts! And indeed, the soundtrack noticeably brightens as another character appears onscreen. Her portrayal is even less accurate than that of her partner, giving her some a slightly otherworldly feel - she looks more than a housewife from those 20th century movies than a colonist.

"Ooh, honey, I know just what you need..."

She slowly makes her way across the room, holding something behind her back. The man reacts as if he saw an angel. To be fair, the bright dress and platinum blonde hair could have you fooled.

"You mean..."

Her smile brightens the room.

"Yes! The delivery just came in."

His expression becomes awestruck. Turns out the angel visited to offer him a VIP pass to Eden, including free membership in the golf association.

"Mmh... can you smell that?" The woman shows a full set of too-white teeth as she holds a cup filled with a rich dark liquid up to the camera. "It's real Genuine Arabian Coffee, fresh from the Tichy store."

The Trisense billboard begins to hum softly. After a few moments, a delicious aroma fills the air, engineered to resemble freshly ground coffee beans. Tichy Interspace sunk a fortune into the smell-enabled billboards, but it was worth every Eurocent. The crowd inhales deeply, smiles spreading as the intense scent does. There's no limit to how much marketing they're willing to put up with, just to have this one perfect perfect moment.

Speaking of marketing, the unshaven man has reappeared, cup in hand. He drowns the entire cup in three or four long gulps. If his facial expression can be trusted, he is savouring the experience more than, say, the memory of the day he married. A disembodied voice takes over narration now, letting the couple enjoy a moment together; their giggles imply they'll need some time for themselves.

"Genuine Arabian Coffee. Always available at the New Weimar spaceport... and well worth the trip."

------------------------------------------------------

The Tichy Interspace logo appears in the centre of the screen, bathing the crowd in a soft green glow. They stay, although the spot is over; the scent still lingers in the air, and the billboard won't switch off for another minute or two. The gentle background music stops rather abruptly, however, causing some confused blinks - some of the audience hadn't even noticed it was there until it stopped. Knowing smiles appear, but they are sympathetic rather than mocking. Everyone flinches on their first few watches.

An unspoken sigh goes through the crowd as it disperses. If you haven't signed an exclusive trade contact with Tichy Interspace, a single packet of freeze-dried coffee can cost as much as a month's wage. But it's worth it.

Aw man, I can't believe I missed this. I really ought to visit more often than twice a year...

Oh well. Once again, congratulations, AJA! (And assorted peasants, of course.)

Edit:
Is like hentai game
just gay and not japanese
interweb is filled.
Yes, if it were a hentai game and japanese, the characters would be huge breasted girls... with huge penises.
Or with huge tentacles

You're saying that as if those things were mutually exclusive.
#16
That may be, but if you lower the resolution, it gets all... jaggy. Do you really want that, you monster?!

Doesn't really matter though, apart from support for 1280x1024 Visionaire isn't more powerful or easier to handle than AGS, on the contrary.

Yes, yes, that's all well and good. But AGS doesn't have support for 1280x1024.

Do you know what lower resolution does to the size of those penises? Do have no heart?  :'(

Something like if a gui has been visible do this etc  something along that line.

You'll need to use a boolean for this. Declare the variable as false, set it true in the same function that the GUI is set visible. When you need to know whether the GUI has been visible, just examine the value.

What about if player has been in previous/certain  room?

One of these functions, depending on what exactly you're trying to check.

Sorry I couldn't really help.  :-\ In a fit, you could always download the individual images and put a small Flash movie together by hand, or something.

No, it works from Germany.

However, looking at the video and especially the source code of the page*... I'm not sure if this is something you CAN download. As far as I can see, the "movie" is generated from the pictures in the gallery - they're just enlargened and only parts are shown, creating the impression of a "video".

I might be mistaken, though.

(*Specifically, the slightly strange URL to the link. flash/moviegallery.swf?imageinfo=27,80140978,http://www.justcarwebsites.com/~donreidford/,flash/,blank.mp3,flash/background.png looks suspiciously like a general-purpose video generation file taking some arguments.)
