Do you still need 2D background pixel artists? I'm kind of a perennial lurker around here and wouldn't mind contributing (let me know and I can dig up some samples, or draw a new one if that's what's preferred).

Well... after lurking/playing around with AGS for years, I started feeling okay about my ability to make a finished game, so why not jump in with a potentially very embarrassing monthly theme? ;)

I think I have an idea that I can make work, hopefully it will suitably fit the theme.

AGS Games in Production / Re: He Watches

I was digging around last night for something new to play and this has caught my eye - to the point I actually decided to login to my decrepit forum account (whooo). Really enjoyed the demo.

I read through the thread and thought I'd add the thoughts I had while playing, 'cause, why not (though since you're constantly working on the game, maybe some of this has been addressed):

- Perhaps instead of the "wait, what?" reaction when left-clicking an object that doesn't have a default "interact" action assigned, it could just default back to "walk to"? For me, the most annoying thing about that message is that even though it's not onscreen for very long, it takes away my cursor and doesn't let me do anything else. I can always reach up and hit "." to stop the text, but still.

- There have been some suggestions on how to reduce clicks for lighting the candles - maybe after doing it the long way once, a click on the candlestand brings up a dialogue asking you to confirm you want to place and light a candle? Alternately, if the candle icon comes to be on the main screen, like the lighter, perhaps placing one from there auto-lights it (since it seems you can't pick up a candle once you place it, even if it's not lit).

- It seems odd that you can't take candles or blow them out once placed, but since it's a horror game, and there are spirits causing mischief (I loved hitting the lighter in the nursery and having the little shadow kid snuff it), maybe that could be used to explain it?

I'll definitely be watching this project. Love the art style, and the mood lighting is fantastic. :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone--that should help a whole lot. I'll do some work on the backgrounds and then repost the new versions.  :)

EDIT - Here are the revisions:

- Darkened and desaturated, due to it being nighttime and the hills above blocking full moonlight
- Repainted trees and treeline so they extend off the screen and don't look so silly.
- Made grass less random and less detailed
- Added shadows

- Redrew treetops so that they actually look like trees (I hope).
- Added more hills into the background
- Added shadows, darkened and highlighted things. (Nighttime with full moon)

- Added lots of contrast to this picture in particular, given the moonlight
- Added shadows
- Lessened random lines on rocks
- Brightened ivy to stand out against darkness (player needs to interact with it, so it needs to stand out some)

- Darkened and smoothed out rock
- Added lanterns as a light source
- Gave pub a name
- Rock floor still needs some work, probably.

Thanks again for the critique, it really helped!

Hi all - I discovered AGS a few years ago, and was very excited because I grew up on LucasArts adventure games, and thought it was a great way to keep the genre alive. I've been playing fan-games for awhile, and now I think I'm ready to start putting my own game together.

I'm reasonably confident in my pixel-art skills regarding objects and people, but backgrounds have never been my strong suit. These are the first backgrounds for my game; I was wondering if I could get some feedback?

The dimensions are odd because a few of the rooms scroll, and I cropped out the black parts at the bottom of the screen I reserved for my GUI. Also linked to the big versions, because some of them might stretch out the forums otherwise.

I think the last one is probably the one I'm least satisfied with.

Thanks in advance!  :)
