Hyperbole, noun: Deliberate exaggeration or overstatement; especially as a literary or rhetorical device.
Metaphor, noun: The use of a word or phrase to refer to something that it isn’t, invoking a direct similarity between the word or phrase used and the thing described.

I wasn't literally talking about a special-needs kid being picked on by the other kids in my neighbourhood. You clearly understand these concepts, otherwise you no doubt would have called me out for posting non-sequiturs. Therefore, I deduce that you are deliberately misunderstanding me in order to get a reaction. Therefore, you be a troll, and I be ignoring you now.

Night night. :-*

Please don't try to turn this into a situation where you get to play the bigger man.
I am actually, honestly quite offended by that. Congratulations. It doesn't happen often.

QuoteIf Icey wants to equate this situation to bullying, that's up to him. That's usually the last resort of somebody who doesn't want to address their own behavior, and would rather appear to be victimized. The fact that you are choosing to buy into that doesn't automatically invalidate opposing points or make people into bullies.
I'm not buying into anything. I'm describing the situation as I see it from my point of view, just like you are. The fact that you don't agree with me does not automatically give you the right to just write my opinion off like that. The reason why I quoted Icey is because I figure if anyone was an authority on how he feels about this, it'd be himself. And, you know, sometimes when people say they're being bullied, it means they really do feel like they're being bullied. Sure, you can write it off as him just trying to get some sympathy if you want, but that doesn't change my opinion of the events that led to him saying it.

QuoteWhile a handful of people have, in the past, said something akin to "Please fuck off!" in response to some of Icey's threads, that doesn't prove that vindictive bullying is indicative of the community's response to Icey in general. Perhaps those people were just tired of having to deal with him.
Firstly, I didn't say anything about "vindictive bullying". Ask any playground bully about their situation and most will say something to the effect of "we're only playing around", but that doesn't mean that everyone involved feels the same way.
Secondly, I also didn't say anything about "the community's response to Icey in general". I said "some people".
Lastly, you seem to be equating bullying with direct attacks, whereas I specifically mentioned "constantly undermining [his] self-esteem". You may not agree with me that this constitutes bullying, so call it whatever you want, but it still makes me feel uncomfortable seeing it happen.

tl;dr - We disagree on how we see the situation. Fine. I'm going to bed.

Nobody is bullying him, period.
Must just be my imagination, then. If nobody else thinks that constantly undermining somebody's self-esteem for shits and giggles constitutes bullying, then I guess it's all fine. If nobody else thinks that maybe some replies to Icey's recent posts have been a tad disproportionate, then I guess that's fine too. The important thing is that Icey doesn't feel he's being bullied.

I am being picked on by adults who acted like kids...
If this was school some might call this bullying...
Ah.
But what does Icey know, right? He can't even use proper grammar.

Anyway, bottom line: I think that some people have been going a bit too far recently, especially since it is obvious to a few of us that over the past few months Icey has really been trying to take the advice given to him, and has shown some improvement. I'm not going to name anybody, but now I've said my piece, and I will leave this thread alone.

Try this.
Code: ags

int timer;
function room_RepExec()
{
  if (timer<40) {gNoise.backgroundgraphic=6; timer++;}
  else if (timer<80) {gNoise.backgroundgraphic=7; timer++;}
  else if (timer<120) {gNoise.backgroundgraphic=8; timer++;}
  else timer=1;
}

Yeah, Icey! Stick to making shallow imitations of 20-year old Lucasarts franchises, like the rest of us!
I know the first piece of advice anyone ever gives is that you should make the games you want to make, but screw that! You should only make games I want you to make!
I didn't know Catcher in the Rye was Lucasarts IP! The more you know~!
Yep. That's why that's the part of your post that I quoted.

I don't disagree with you, Scavenger. And this isn't directed at you, personally.
I just find it rather hypocritical that most of Icey's posts are followed by people telling him to stop ripping off Final Fantasy, but most of the positive replies in GiP threads are along the lines of "this looks awesome because it looks like my favourite 20-year old Lucasarts franchise!", which kind of implies that the problem is solely in his choice of source material.

They will do/say something obviously wrong, or off, or silly, or an easy-to-detect lie, etc. simply because they know it'll generate a response.
Like following someone around the forum, replying to every one of their posts by teasing them about every misplaced apostrophe. Or continually telling them that nobody cares about the stuff they care about, so they should just stop doing it. By my count, there are 5 or 6 trolls around here, none of which is Icey.

This used to be a nice neighbourhood until that new kid moved in, now all the other kids have suddenly turned into bullies. They never used to bully each other, so we're entirely justified in blaming the new kid for being an easy target.

Aahahahaha. Let's all point and laugh at the kid with learning difficulties. Aahahahaha. He seems to have trouble understanding concepts that I can easily comprehend. Aahahahaha. It's funny because he's inferior to me. Aahahahaha. We should taunt, tease, humiliate and generally bully him until he just GIVES UP TRYING TO DO THE THINGS HE ENJOYS AND FUCKS OFF! As far as I can tell it a bit of a archaic term for a shell.
Yeah, as you said, there is an old shell called "Executive", and the Windows interface classified itself as an "MS-DOS Executive" for the first few versions. But more recently there is also the "Windows Executive" that runs between the UI and the kernel in NT, which seems to either be unrelated to the old definition, or is related in a very specific way that I can't figure out.
It's just tough to find anything searching for 'shell' and 'executive' that isn't about oil.

Well I'm going to take a stab at that one Magnus, but I may be completely wrong. I'm pretty sure this IS NOT what you're asking, cos I'd assume you know the difference between EXE and shells....
Hey, man. Thanks for the in-depth answer, but you're right. That's not what I'm asking. ;)

What I'm looking for is more info on what is summarised here. That says that an executive is a shell, but I figure there must be a difference or it would just be called a shell, right? I assume it's a kind of "squares are all rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares" type thing, but can anyone give me any more specific info?

Can anyone tell me, in terms of computers, what precisely is an executive?
I know it's basically a kind of user interface, but what's the difference between an executive and a shell, for instance?

Well glad you got that working for you, but at the very least shouldn't you be storing the raw text into a separate String so you can actually read it?
That's where our old friend tempstring returns.

Here's the complete working code so far. I've now hidden txtPassword and replaced it with lblPass.
Code: ags

function repeatedly_execute {
  int place=txtPassword.Text.Length-1;
  if (txtPassword.Enabled) {
    if (txtPassword.Text.Length!=0) {
      if (txtPassword.Text.Chars[place]!=42) {
        tempstring=tempstring.AppendChar(txtPassword.Text.Chars[place]);
        txtPassword.Text=txtPassword.Text.ReplaceCharAt(place, 42);
        lblPass.Text=txtPassword.Text.AppendChar(95);
      }
      if (tempstring.Length-1>place) {
        tempstring=tempstring.Truncate(place+1);
        lblPass.Text=txtPassword.Text.AppendChar(95);
      }
      if (lblPass.Text.Chars[place+1]!=95) lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.AppendChar(95);
    }
    else {
      tempstring="";
      lblPass.Text="_";
    }
  }
  else if (lblPass.Text.Chars[place+1]==95) lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.Truncate(place+1);
}

I still have two issues, though...
1) Is there a way to further simplify this at all? In particular, I'm pretty sure I don't need the AppendChar(95) bit in three different places (four including lblPass.Text="_"), or to check lblPass.Text.Chars[place+1] twice.
2) The regular underscore on the label looks really thin and weedy next to one used in the real text box. Is there a way to beef it up at all? I use text boxes elsewhere in the game, and I'd rather not have to replace them all with labels just to make them match. Or to have to base my choice of font entirely around that one character.

EDIT:
New approach, a lot simpler. I realised that only lblPass.Text needs to be obscured, and as long as txtPassword is hidden it can be left clean, which also means that tempstring is once again unnecessary.
Code: ags

function repeatedly_execute {
  int place=lblPass.Text.Length-1;
  if (txtPassword.Enabled) {
    if (lblPass.Text.Chars[place]!=95) lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.AppendChar(95);
    else {
      if (txtPassword.Text.Length>place) {
        if (lblPass.Text.Chars[place]==95) lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.Truncate(place);
        lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.AppendChar(42);
      }
      else if (txtPassword.Text.Length<place) {
        lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.Truncate(place-1);
      }
    }
  }
  else if (lblPass.Text.Chars[place]==95) lblPass.Text=lblPass.Text.Truncate(place);
}

Issue 2 still applies, though. Any ideas?
Thanks again.

Ugh. I keep forgetting that string.Append and string.Truncate are passive. I think it's because they're present-tense verbs, so it implies they actually do something.

Also, I didn't know you could directly use GUIControl.Text.Append, hence the tempstring.

Anyway, I'm going to keep it simple for now.
Code: ags
function repeatedly_execute {
  if (txtPassword.Enabled)
  {
    if (txtPassword.Text.Length!=0) {
      txtPassword.Text=txtPassword.Text.Truncate(txtPassword.Text.Length-1);
      txtPassword.Text=txtPassword.Text.AppendChar(42);
    }
  }
}

It's basically what I was trying before, but in rep_exec instead of hoping it would trigger via on_key_press like I had it.
Downside is that the last letter typed is visible for a loop before becoming an asterisk, so I'll probably swap txtPassword for a regular label that just mimics a text box at some point, but this works well enough for the time being.

Thanks guys.

Hi.
I have a password input text box and would like it to replace all the characters as typed with asterisks.
My question is: how does AGS process key presses, how can I stop it, and how can I simulate it?
i.e. How do I make it ignore a key that has been pressed, and register a different key that hasn't?

I have tried doing a straight swap with
Code: ags
if (keycode>='A' && keycode<='Z') keycode=42;

but the text box just displays what was typed.

I also tried maybe swapping the chars after the fact with
Code: ags
tempstring.AppendChar(42); txtPassword.Text=tempstring;

but that does absolutely nothing. The text still displays as normal.

I have no idea what else I can try. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Angel from Montgomery is a very cool song. And I think Noa's voice could make it sound great. It's even got enough parts for everybody, if one of the guitars takes the violin part.

Like Wyz said a while ago, seeing as we're having everyone pick a cover, I reckon we should do them all. And if somebody's choice is too tough, let them choose another. Even if everyone is eager to start an original composition, I'd like to come back and do the rest of the covers later on.

Quote from: NoaBaba oriley is more up-beat , just like you suggested in your PM , and it seems pretty challenging , in a good way that can produce interesting things from us.. or not..
I can't speak for you, because I don't know your range yet, but it's pretty easy for the guitars and piano. It's basically just three chords for the most part. And I'm sure you can knock it out of the park. :)

And I'm glad people don't dislike Cream. I may just change my mind again...
