I can't remember where, but there is a proverb somewhere that says something like "It takes ten honest compliments to make up for one insult." Obviously this isn't meant for anyone in particular, I'm bringing this up because of what Dual said.
QuoteNot just referring to the critics lounge, but why do sometimes people expect only to be praised?
Bottom line, people in general want affirmation. The quality of the affirmation is a different matter. Of course comments like "That's really good!" don't really get anyone anywhere, (don't get me wrong, I appreciate any comment as much as the next person) even if the statement is an honest one. But then you get into picking apart the finer details, which relates to something I've always wondered:

What makes a person qualified enough to critique another's work? In school/at work it's one thing, through the forums is another. I've been looking through CL long before I even had my original account, but I never bothered posting because I figured there was always someone else who could provide better advice. I don't expect there to be a single answer to this,  because everyone has their own standard. Besides, it's more of a rhetorical question: Would you reject another person's advice because you see them as being less skilled, even if they might be right? I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm sure some people don't say as much for this reason. It might even be the reason there aren't more in-depth critiques.

Three things: Inability to escape, having to think fast and knowing there's danger but not knowing where or when. If anyone remembers Shivers, that game always did it for me.  The idea of being stuck in a museum for the night where a few mysterious deaths occurred sounds overdone, yes? But having to find the horror in order to beat the game was a good twist. You didn't want to have to go after it, but you needed to. Not to mention it had a rather unsettling soundtrack.

For those that feel this fits under the 'startle but not scare'  category, both the Laura Bow games are better examples. Especially the end of the second one. I hated having to solve the puzzles quickly, knowing there was a rampaging murderer in the next room and he wanted you dead. It's the whole one-misclick-and-you're-dead idea, it's not the scariest for sure, but it tends to keep a person on the edge of their seat.

As for antagonists, anything involving a group of suspects, all with motive to do something awful but with no real evidence against any of them tends to be on the scary side. This ties into the whole idea of imagination based horror, especially if you're stuck somewhere with the people mentioned and escape is not possible. Who do you choose to avoid?
Of course, this is all opinion. Just throwing stuff out there :)

So I notice it's been over a week since this ended, and both Ricco and Stochie seem to have disappeared. Xellie, if you want to start the new one, go for it :)

Congrats Loominous and Mad! :)

Alright, time to end this :D

1st place: Captain Ricco
Creative and detailed; the sprites went along with the story and each other. Yes it IS that good!

2nd place: Stochie
This one was hilarious and unexpected; the expression and colours are perfect.

3rd place: Xellie
I like the idea and the end result,   though it's not very clear how it goes with the original story. But fitting the two objects together was more important, and you did this rather well.

Congratulations all of you!
Next one is yours to start, Ricco

Oh dear. Choosing between good ideas is so difficult  >:( Great entries so far, keep them coming!
Anyways, all the winners get medals but if there's still four entries by the end I'll make another so everybody gets something.

I apologize for the lack of transparency, but as far as I know there's no way to do that with paint. So feel free to fix it if you win one :)

I don't suppose you'd accept something hand drawn? I'd love to enter but I haven't got the time to finish it in paint. If not, submitting for fun is always good too.

EDIT: Thanks Dual :D

Hooray! A cult!

After finally getting around to cleaning out your garage/attic/closet, you come across an old dusty box. Which is odd because you don't remember putting it there, or even who it belongs to. You open the box anyway, and inside you find

All you can tell is that the objects go together in some way or another. So what are they?

Rules:
- Lines are there for a reason, stay in them
- Each shape can be rotated/flipped independently from the other, but no resizing
- No colour limit
- Both shapes are required, and there must be some sort of indication that the objects either belong or work together in some way

Now go have fun  ;)

Thanks guys, I'll have the next one up and running later today :)

It was divine at one point, clearly no longer.

I suggest you run, it still looks hungry.

Far from perfect but I have no more patience for these pixels. So here she is:

It appears my mouse skipped. But it's too late to fix.

Thanks Evil, that really helps a lot. I've gone back and changed a few things, namely trying to fix the left eye socket, shading the nose a bit more and taking an inch or so off the chin. Which was probably not the best idea but the face I'm going off of was a lot shorter anyway.

Also, something else I should have mentioned  was that the assignment I am doing this for demands the final product be based off a collage of pictures of the face, and not just one whole photo. Although the three photos I used are of the same person, they were all taken months apart and from different angles, which is half of why the eyebrow/ eye proportions are pretty bad. The other half is that I just can't seem to draw them right :P

Anyway, here's the edit ( didn't post the actual images because they're absolutely massive, and for some reason I couldn't get the resize to work. I still have a lot to learn it seems.)

The mouth needs to be moved up and lengthened a bit more. Probably a lot of other things still need fixing too.

Is it worth posting?
I don't know. But my attempt at a pun sparked your curiosity and here you are.

So there's this thing called university which requires that I draw things that I normally wouldn't. Which brings us to
Exhibit A

My problem is that I am fairly new to this thing called portraiture (stuff like this is more my style). Long story short, I've got a long way to go here. I'm looking for crit, because it's far from perfect and I'm stuck on where to go. One thing I noticed was that the lips seem too short and the space between the eyes a wee bit too large. But I could just be looking at it too much.
So, if any of you skilled in this area happen to take a look, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/criticism or even just what works, if anything.

How about a pirate-y pegleg parrot?

22 colours + transparency [Much thanks to Sylvr for figuring it out and fixing the white background]

We guess http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?action=profile;u=9069;sa=showPosts is written by a woman (51%), however it's quite gender neutral.

Betcha can't beat my neutralness :P
