Glad to hear it :)

It was my pleasure, except for the parts where I had to code things and write dialogue and figure out sprites.

HINTS

  • Visit the game's original website.
  • Check your inventory at the start of the game.
  • Doom powerups tend to be placed in the same locations as in the original game itself.
  • If an item is not placed where it should be (or, for instance, the music isn't correct for the given level), bonus points are sometimes attributed for setting things right.

Hey everyone.

Not too long ago (read: very long ago), I threw together an AGS game based on/ripping off sprites from the original Doom. That was in November 2003, and the original announcement is here (I had a slightly shorter forum name back then).

This morning---a crisp, frosty morning in December 2009---I decided it might be a good idea to actually post the game to the AGS games list. It apparently takes me some time to come to decisions.

The new, official AGS games page is here, and believe me, it was entirely worth the wait.

In Harry's 21st Birthday, you play as Tom, one of Doom's absolutely charming and horrendously violent Barons of Hell. Tom's buddy Harry (a Cyberdemon) is celebrating his birthday today, and Tom's throwing a shindig at his sweet bachelor pad, the Phobos Anomaly (E1M8). Our story starts with Tom paying a visit to the Fortress of Mystery (E2M9), where he must convince his cacodemon friend Sally to take Harry out on the town, so that Tom himself can return home to prepare...

Though the game has already technically been announced for 6 years (may the forum gods forgive me), I figured this would make things more official, and allow some people to more easily track down the game in the future.

Download, play, and comment! (Optional: enjoy).

OMG, are you talking about Harry's 21st Birthday? It was written by one of my best buds here. I play board games with this guy, like, weekly. And the really funny thing is he didn't tell me he had made an AGS game until pretty recently. This is so weird. Small internet!

Um, hi everyone. I'm the idiot responsible for Harry's 21st Birthday. I basically created my account 5 minutes ago to reply here.  :D

So, the short history lesson. I made the game in 2001 2003 (my how time flies). Boom. Fast forward to 2008, when I met Ivy at a videogame conference in Montreal. We do indeed play a lot of board games, at which she routinely destroys me both mentally and, frankly, morally. Then, I showed her the game, because it was entirely stupid and I figured she'd get a kick out of it. Then, early this morning, she pointed me towards this thread; and the rest, as they say, is alarmingly recent history.

Honestly, I didn't think anyone actually played this thing---I literally made it for no other reason than to satisfy my curiosity. So I'm flattered you guys dig it.

I recognized phobos anomaly, tower of babel and Dis.
The first room though, and the one where you meet Harry, I did not recognise them. for sure from Inferno, maybe House of Pain and Slough of Despair?

Close. Phobos Lab and Toxin Refinery.

Ah, not quite! Both rooms come from E2M9: Fortress of Mystery, the secret level in Episode 2.

And to those that have played the game through, I can only say that I apologise so very profusely.
