Beginners' Technical Questions / Music trouble
Fri 10/02/2006 10:34:13
Hi all,

I've been having trouble with my music I'm using.

I have a music file, music0.wav, which doesn't seem to work. The manual said music0.wav should start playing when the game loads.

I also tried:
- the play music on room load
- interaction editor commands

I didn't try hand-scripting, but I have the feeling the problem is with the soundcard of my pc (which doesn't play MiDi's anymore), though this is not sure.

Are you sure you checked or the .AVI plays in other programs? I have problems with music on my pc which doesn't work inside AGS, but outside AGS (in normal music/media players) it does work...

Maybe this is your problem?

Thanks, I didn't really find anything when I searched (maybe the wrong words?). I searched for "player can choose name".

How do I do equipable items?

I have a few things I want to do:
- clothes, which can't be removed, only replaced
- talisman, weapon and shields which can be completely removed

I also don't know anything about skills...

How can I do skilltypes, of which you can choose 3 of 5?

Well, I've been thinking about the tutorial thingy, and I think there shouldn't be a tutorial about how to make the battle system, like you guys said.

I think this is what a good (and of course simple) RPG tutorial needs:
- More about how to get globalInts to work. Like, how can I get a globalInt done which says which monster I'm fighting for?
- How to deal damage to the party and enemies and get it on screen?
- How to get skills, skillcatagories, classes (in case this is optional), and abilities done.
- How to handle experience.
- How to handle a turn-based RPG with different rooms for battle and general exploring and how to use walkable areas (for example) for real-time RPG's.
- How to make GUI's which are used in battle. (Simple examples, of course, which can be expanded)

Simply said this would be a tutorial for the people (with only a tiny bit of experience) who want to make RPG's. This would be just a tutorial that gives a basic idea about how to get an RPG done. It's like making a template which you can expand with more advanced stuff. I'm convinced there will be RPG's which will look quite the same because they're basic, but there always are people which want to expand their basic system with some unique features.

I'd do this tutorial myself if I was more experienced with scripting, but I hardly get how I can get globalInts, strings, variables, etc. done all by myself, so I can't do it...

Don't get me wrong, I love this thread and I think you guys are right about having standart RPG's, but it's a lot of work to find what you search for in here.

Anyways, it's just an idea... I won't force anyone to make this.  :P

Competitions & Activities / Re: February MAGS

Thanks for the info.

I think I'll participate next month, I don't get that much inspiration with the theme underworld for things to happen. I already imagined things with witches, vampires, Black MAgic, etc. But I just can't create anything that's good enough.

Hi,

I'm searching for a way to make a room with some people in which you can name the main character(s) of a game.

One person will talk to the main character, and ask for her name. You, as the player, will be able to give her a premade, or a custom name. How can I get this done? Do I need a GUI or the Text-parser?

Thanks,

I see...

Well, I like the uppermost version best! (24 bit, right?)

I love how it turned out, will there be a night version too?
#229
Personally I always rename bitmaps which are as big as icons at a big size. But AGS tells you you can't do that. I'm currently searching for a good icon converter/maker, and I'll post a link when I found a free and reliable one.
#230
Can somebody tell me what's the difference between those 3 versions? I don't see a difference...
#231
I use WinRar to zip them. I suppose you use WinZip or something different, I didn't test or WinZip opens the readme's instant, but WinRar does.

I'll test it out.

I'm very happy to announce my newest member of the crew: Akumayo.

Akumayo offered help for the backgrounds, which will speed up the game creation progress. Now I have more time to work on the characters I want to include, plus the details of the storyline.

However, I still need a musician to help me out... I've contacted some members, but... well, you can guess the outcome.

Just PM me when you want to help me with some music!

A nearly brilliant suggestion just came up: Why don't you make a skipable video of the intro? Of course video's take some MB's, but I don't know or you can make the intro skipable or not.

I'll look out for the correct demo!

Well, I never participated, but I'd love to one day. Maybe now, I don't know, but I have some stuff on my hands already so it can be very difficult.

One question: Is the MAGS competition restricted to Adventures?

This sounds logical to me, but who knows...

I'd say, add some details and more shadows. This looks a bit too flat. Try to get a main point wherefrom the light comes, and work it out just a little more.

The ceiling also looks a little weird.

But besides that it looks pretty good, don't worry! ;)

Hi,

I've played the demo by now, and I'm sure I'll love the game when finished.
But her comesthe big list:

I have a few things I didn't like:
* The text is a bit slow, and that's very irritating in the intro and in battle.
* The intro can't be skipped (the letter). I had to start overnew and watch the whole letter again, which takes 5-10 minutes. I found that pretty anoying, to be honest.

And here some mistakes I noticed:
* Sometimes a sentence isn't ended by dots. It's no big deal, but sometimes it's hard to say what belongs to which sentence.
* The game crashed when Duvall got at lvl 3 (the bug you were talking about?)
* When I entered the temple again I had the conversation which belongs to the beginning of the game again. On top of that, Senshi's portrait dissapeared after that.
* I got the Fireball Chackra-attack after I chose Water as Chakra (I didn't test fire yet).

Please note this is only for help. I still love this game! ;D:P

I'll post when I found out more.

Well, his face looks a bit weird, and the clothes too... simple and plain.

Maybe you can try to get the colours of his clothes a bit more interesting and a little brighter. If you want him to be some kind of hero, maybe you can get hime a more sportive look, if that fits his character. A logo or a pattern can also help.

Thanks for the C&C, I needed this.

I didn't use black outlines, but darker versions of the colours I used in the objects themselves.

I'll definetely take a good look at the screenshots of Terranigma, the backgrounds there look great.

Right now I'll start improving my tiles, I'll post a better version at the download page listed in my first post. :D

I fixed it, something went wrong with the server. You can't directlink, and that's what I tried. ;D'

Hi all, I'm working on some tilesets for some games of mine, but I think some critisism of others will be needed.

I'll change some colours later, but I need suggestions about the colours I already have, and which details I can add/improve.

So far I added:
- plain ground, 2 colourvariations
- rocks, 2 colour variations
- mushrooms, with and without dots
- flowers
- trees, 1 alive, 1 chopped and 1 lying on the ground
- water and wateredges
- water flowers

I'll wait for your opinion!
