The Rumpus Room / Re: How did you find AGS?
Sun 29/01/2006 14:59:15
Well, I searched the net for game making programs, and I found AGS! Simple but true!
#242
I probably shouldn't say this, but my first reaction to this thread was a big laugh. I tried RPG Toolkit, Game Maker, and some other gamecreators, but AGS is the most simple program you can get.

I have some guidelines which will bare you to death or which will learn you some things:
- I have to say Paint is the best program for making sprites. I always used Paint, and it's the best Painting program for basic sprites. The only downside is that it doen't support layers and only a few filetypes.
- Did you check out the site of Mr. Colossal? That site has really good tutorials to help with any type of graphics. There are tons of sites out there which offer free graphics and/or tutorials, just put some time in it.
- Ask other members which have help-icons beneath their avatar for help. I always do when I am stuck! ;D
- Be patient, games take time. A LOT time. Just don't expect to get a food game done in a week or two.
- Don't give up after only 2-3 tries. You can't be perfect at everything, but you can always learn new techniques.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, I'll try it out!

In general I have a new game for testing GUI's and these kinds of things ready. It's the standard game which isn't totally empty (with Roger in it), customized with a grey and empty room and also an other character, a hotspot, a region, an object, etc. This way I can test nearly anything, but sometimes that doesn't totally work of course.

I voted on Valis too, if I remember correctly, but I don't know or I voted for best demo... :-\

EDIT: Yay, the demo is up again! Now I can FINALLY play! ^.^ *jumps a hole in the air*

Hi all,

I'm working on this game again, so don't worry. ;)

I still need music artists, but the backgrounds are my major concern. I'm making 100% home-made tiles now, and they need a lot of time, but this way I can easily work out details without having to apply a style different from my own. I love Eph's but the colours are too bright and too grey for this game. Sorry Eph!

Anyways, I have refreshed energy, and I'll post some new screenshots when I get a new background done.

EDIT: I've updated the first post with a new statistic, namely story. I also changed a thing or two, but only trained eye's will be able to notice that. ;)

Hi all,

I'm asking a lot around (I'm sure of that), and this time I want to know or it is possible to create a savegame style like in the Zelda games.

With this I mean:
- Give your character a (pre-programmed or text parsed) name,
- being able to save in up to 3 slots only,
- Maybe some kind of password security

This may sound strange, but I want to try this out.

My my, seems like the girls are the ones to pick on here. I'm also female, so I feel pretty >:(. I hope this said enough.

This game looks totally great, and I'd love to help, but I don't have a lot of time, and I'm better at tiled games.

I hope the game gets bigger than planned, if possible, necause this one totally rocks! :D

I still love your game! ;)

This is exactly what we needed!  ;D ;D ;D

Brilliant! 8)

I'll get my hands on it, thanks Ashen!

Ooh, I like this game a lot, and a new demo soon? Yay!!!

Back-upping is neccissary, like Pablo said, but I, too, have problems with doing that in time... ;D'

How will the new battle system be? (Or do I have to play tyhe demo to know? ;))
#252
Well, I wanted to time some actions and I sometimes use the "if..." commands.

In case of the "if..." commands I want to have the player do absolutely nothing. Like: If you have inventory item X nothing happens when you talk to Y.

About timing, I want to have some persons walking in my game without them moving continously. It's like e.g. a soldier moving 2 seconds to the left. Stay on that spot for 4 seconds, move to the right for 2 seconds, stop again for 4 seconds, and repeat in a loop. If you ever played one of the Pokémon RPG's on the Gameboy (Colour/Advance) you know what I mean.

Can you help me out?

Hi all,

I've been using AGS for quite a while, but I can't use the Do Nothing command. I wanted to use this for special occasions, but it doesn't work.
Can someone tell the use of it to me?

Thanks in advance,
Yurina

EDIT: This game slumbers on an unreachable pc...
#255
Bad news, my game is officially on hold. I know how I'll let the game continue, I have all characters right in my head. What's the problem you ask? The backgrounds and the sound.

* Backgrounds:
I hate my current backgrounds to be honest. The tiles don't look bad, but I'm bad at adding details, and I'm never convinced they look good. I also don't have the time to work on them. So I request help.
I'm looking for someone with tile experience who want to give me a home-made set of some locations I need to get done. I can send you sketches of the rooms I need. I'm not asking for one person to do all the work as long as the ones who help me out have backies who correspond good with eachother.

* Music and sound:
I need footsteps, flowing water, bees, birds ,some kind of sci-fi sound like you open a program which works with holograms (hard to describe) and maybe other things I can't think of now. I don't care where you get them or how you make them as long as they are not protected by patents, etc.
The music has to be a bit celtic and midieval. The world of Elesta is a fantasy-world with monsters, warriors, mages, etc. But this game focusses on something a bit different. The music and sound will maybe also be used for future Elestian Tales, be aware of that.

I'll also put this in this thread:

Just PM me if you want to offer your services.

EDIT: I updated the first post a bit.

Waow, this sounds and looks good! ;D

We know the basic story plot, and I must say it sounds unoriginal at first, but the most original storylines can still be crapgames. The way the story developes and what events and characters are in it matter a lot more to me.

I wish you good luck!

I also want to make a game of mine a competant. Not because I have a big ego, but I definitely need some inspiriation (being a nominee always helps me... what?!)

It's Elestian Tales: Bittersweet Sanity

* Best Demo:
I only released a demo for now which includes about 6-10% of the whole WORLD (Not the whole game, it's going to be a lot larger if possible).

* Best Story:
Myself, I found this a pretty original story. Some others also complimented me on this, so I give it a go.

* Best Character Art:
I can't help people love my manga-influence. 8) :P

* Best Player Character:
This will be Maya, of course

* Best Non-player character:
Hannah was my choice.

Here's the link to the topic about this game, so you can get more info:

This isn't actually an update, but I've posted a few nominationable thingies in the For Your Consideration thread.
#259
I'm sorry to hear you have so little time for yourself, that must be hard in combination with GOA...

Myself, I attend highschool, so I don't know much about work... thingies...

I support you, so don't give up on this, okay? ;)
#260
It's sad you don't have that much time for GOA, but rushing things never makes them better, I guess.

(What's AGS "pay per play"??)
