Hi all,

I'm having this really diffivult problem here.

I'm making a game which uses tiles. So far, no problems. But I'm having this issue: Is it possible to make a background in two layers, in a way that one of those layers will dissappear or become transperant.

Myself, I thought of using objects, but I have reasons to find alternatives:
- Large objects take up a lot of memory to use.
- There is a limit of objects you can use in a game.

If I leave these layers out, it looks like the main character is indoors, but I want to prevent that illusion. If this problem can only be solved using objects, can I get some advice for making the backgrounds look less like indoor backgrounds?

Thanks in advance,
~Yurina

Will you be animating it? Because that will be the real challenge.

Well, I think I'll try to, but I'm sure the animations will only be attacks, defending, etc. and not just standing, since that'll take a lot more pictures. Besides, I'm trying to make new enemies too...

Akumayo: I tried to get a perspectively correct look, but again I failed a bit... But that doesn't make ik look boring and like a watery ribbon too... ^.^'

I dropped the idea of  dithering, by the way, it' s a lot of work and not nearly as good as I thought...

buloght: This is even more than I ever pulled up! I never get my grass right, and I'm no good at trees and objects as well.

It's not very interactive, but it's worth checking out if you want to taste what AGS can bring you if you talk about RPG's.

Maltjik: Thanks, nice colours! I like them more as mine...

I've FINALLY finished my own colours. I did it rather different, but hey...

I also thought of dithering, but I don't know or it'll do the picture any good.

It's sad bulogth will leave us (temporarily)... :(

But about the tech demo: I'll take a look, maybe there are things I can learn from for my own games! :D

What I sayis: ask permission.

If you make a game that is based, but not similar to the original, there is more chance the answer is yes. It would also be wise to state what you want to make and that it'll be completely free. I never really asked permission for anything myself, but I'd rather not get my hands burned.

But if you REALLY want to make a game about a certain topic, and you don't want to hear a no, then try mats way. But remember Tiki's kids well when you do that.

That's a very nice drawing.
You should attempt to turn it into a sprite before asking for C&C, otherwise
- you're just asking someone to paint it for you
- anyone attempting a "paintover" has no idea of your sprite style

You might surprise yourself and make something that you're happy with!

Well, I only need ideas...

these are the outlines I constucted so far (I'm working on colours, light and shades right now):

I'll post the more finaished version soon!

Hm... I was thinking of that too.

But maybe some pastel to make it look a bit like a pearl? Nice idea?

I don't know, maybe I'll expiriment with it.

By the way, paintovers are really appreciated.

Hi all,

since I'm making RPG's with AGS, I wanted to ask some questions about this enemy I designed.

It represents a water elemental (elementals are creatures based on and build up from one element if I'm right):

And yes, I know the lines are a bit... thick... but if I didn't make them a bit thicker, the picture would have been destroyed when I resized it.

My biggest problem: I don't have a single idea on what colours to use for her... >.<

Anyways, I'd love to hear what I can improve.

please don't use lighten/darken brushes, add highlights and shadows using colors you pick yourself.

You know, lighten/darken isn't always bad... Only if you work on an 8-bit game.

Hi,

Well, I'm using this module (from Bernie) to get my character to walk when you press the up, down, left and right buttons. But I ran into several problems:

1] I want my character to only walk north, south, west and east. So not diagonal. How can I get my characters to walk that way? Also: If the player-character walks to an object to examine it, can it be done with cursors in a way so the character walks only in my preferred directions (N,S,W,E and NOT diagonal)?

2] I also want other key functions to be done:
a} Talk/interact/examine an object/person/place when I press the "x"-button when I'm standing next to it (Do I have to use hotspots or regions?).
b} Is it possible to confirm an action with the "x"-button and cancel an action with the "z"-button?
c} How do you make buttons selectable by moving a cursor controlled by a keyboard (like in the Anna game) when you have a GUI opened?

Thanks,
Yurina

P.S.: If you know the answers: I do have to say I use AGS 2.7. A lot of people gave me codes for earlier/later versions, so I say this again.

The design is nice, tough I have a few things I don't quite like:

- the document has no real texture. this makes it just a paper with weird edges.
- drop the blur. it makes this image very unclear and makes the text look weird.

Ali is very right about what he said.

Do you have a copy of the image without blur? If not, then you have a big problem...

So far, there's nothing more to say, really.

But overall it looks like a good game screen.

If providing all our backgrounds and sprites will result in more point-and-click games being made then it's well worth it. Hell, if someone actually used one of our actual story characters in their game that would be awesome...

One of the things we'd like to do when we finish the game is to provide additional animations for some of the more minor characters, like pick up, push, pull, open, close etc even though we don't need them so that even a minor character in our game could be a main (or even the player) character in someone else's game. Obviously our player character (Mia) may not be that appropriate for someone else's game (nurse's costume etc).

Also, we will provide the backgrounds in PSD format (as well as bitmap) so that the backgrounds can be dissassembled, rejigged, and made appropriate for another game (move that tree there, but that building over there, remove that object etc).

I wish all artists had this kind of attitude. It's very hard to find some decent free sprites for games which are of such quality.

That's exactly why we're doing it. If they were only used as reference for paining over that would be great, but the option is there to use them as-is. We want to help other indie developers as much as possible, hence the plugins, tools, sprites, backgrounds. We feel this is very much in the spirit Chris Jones has started with all the work he has done on a completely free adventure creator. In fact, were it not for CJ, we may have never have been inspired to give all this stuff away, so kudos to him!

You guys rock!

Can you do bg's for my game and/or make a tutorial about how you can get such quality bg's? Please?  :o

Serious, I like this bg and El_Dery is right. The pillars aren't out of order.

I'm looking forward to seeing more work of you!

Hmm... a pretty good job for a first time.

But that doesn't mean I will show mercy:

- Add some flowers, trees, etc. to make it look less empty. Maybe a well is  also a nice idea.
- it's too geometric and it loks a bit fake for being so perfect.
- The lensflare makes it hard for characters to walk on the background without walking in front of the lensflare. That'll surely look odd.
- The windows look awful. They're more like smeared paint on a white wallpiece.
- The outlines do look weird since they have a different amount of pixels, you know what I mean?

So far, that's all I can critisize.

Keep up the good work!

This game looks nice so far. No I haven't played it yet, but still.

What I do have to say, I think the keyboard and mouse together work fine, but only if you can use one hand to move the ship (keyboard) and the other to aim and shoot (mouse). Wouldn't it be more convieniant if the left mouse button is used to fire?

It's just a suggestion. I'll donwload the game ASAP.
