Pointless semantics indeed. Okay. How's this?

Yes, most people wouldn't possibly want to vote for Obama because they genuinely like his policies!  They must all be voting so the tiny spark of conscience in them doesn't feel racist, just this once.

QuoteAnd I think Obama is very likely to win the popular vote because a lot of white people think it's 'cool' to vote for him 'cause he's black and they can show how un-racist they are (rather than paying attention to what he's saying) and a lot of black people are simply going to vote for him 'cause he's black.

Which bit didn't you say?

General Discussion / Re: Midi keyboards

1. A midi keyboard... is that a thing that only plays chip-tunes, or can I get a nice sound from one with some samples?

MIDI keyboards send out and recieve MIDI messages only. MIDI is a commonly misunderstood beast with computer users, but basically it is a data format developed in the 80s to create some sort of standard so different synthersisers manufactured by different companies could communicate with each other. It has no sound, it's just a way of organising 0s and 1s.

In real terms this means that a MIDI keyboard has no way of generating sound itself, it is mearly an interface for controlling software or hardware that can interpret MIDI data. With a few thousand pounds spent on some nice sample libraries you'll have a convincing orchestra under your fingertips, or if you load up a SID emulation VST you'll be able to play chip tunes. It's all up to what you plug it in to.

2. It should be easy to plug into my computer.

Yes, if it has a USB interface, which most do these days.

I think I can sum up my feelings about this with :=

QuoteLess fires, less hiking, less brainy discussions, more theme parks, more discoteques and alcohol!

Woah there! No need to take away the best parts of mittens and replace them with the worst parts! ;)

I'd vote for some sort of communal house type thing. The campsite/RV cabins look nice, but that would probably bring up the issue of not having any central private space for us mitteneers to go to. In Greece we could escape to the beach at night, make campfires and be merry together there without irritating any one else (or anyone irritating us!), but when we didn't have this in Benidorm it sort of fell apart.

Maybe a Beach home outside of Miami would be a good idea... it'd be awesome if we had a close beach to chill at that was a bit more secluded

I'd say getting rid of the 'each room has it's own music volume' thing would be a good move, as it's a very odd feature. It never really makes sense to change the music in that way, as it can totally unbalance a mix. I've got a simple ENTER_ROOM thing in the global script that automatically sets the volume to 'very high', as that seems to be the only setting that plays the music back at the 'correct' volume of my oggs without any needless attenuation!

Hey gringos, what's happening?

Sadly it's just a grey smudge on this crap-o-matic webcam, but I wasn't designed to grow facial hair in the first place! It's a biological failsafe to stop me turning in to my Dad.

The new Direct 3D scaling options seem to do some weird things! In 'Nearest Neighbour' mode there's some crazy mix-resolution thing going on, and characters and objects are all blurred and horrible. In 'Anti-Alias' mode, you can see black outlines of the walk-behind areas everywhere. I can drop some screenshots in a PM if it's helpful?

Another painful reminder that I missed Mittens and you guys had all the fun. Good stuff! :)

Haha, Davy you are my favourite thing about this film. I need a beer, me!

Edit: Oh oh, Mills you almost steal it from Davy though, you creepy man you.

I remember ages and ages ago Matt Goble put together an 'upcoming AGS games' page with screenshots and everything, and QFG2VGA was one of the big ones on there... man that must have been back in 2001!

Congratulations for beating Run Hot to release! :=

I'm already jealous of you guys  :'(

Looks like you had a great time - lot's of familiar faces.

Keep em coming!

Yes, I'm feeling the Mittens envy too! Bah, oh well, there's always next year.

Good stuff as always, Grundy! I was pleasantly surprised to hear the 'artefact' theme I wrote again, as I kind of intended it to make an appearance in future games had I had chance to write music for them. I'd have loved to do a different, expanded version of it for this, but as you well know by now all I ever seem to have time to do these days is overtime. :P

The ending was a big surprise as well, as I had set myself up for something totally different having seen the dialogue. I look forward to the resolution of it all!

We've already made arrangements to be in York that day so we can't change it. :(

No worries Dave, if you do find yourself down south between the 2nd and 8th though let us know!
#36
Oh hey, yes, come to London! I'm going to be down that way on the 3rd as I get my long-overdue holiday time then. York is rubbish!

The ones coming are not mentioned, Pieter ;)

Wait, I thought jet, Helm, Adam & Becky were coming? No? Did I miss something?

Zounds, a late reply but yes, we're not going to be able to come this year (again! bah!) due to work and money issues. We're saving up for next year though, so we'll definatly be there!

Yeah, net-neurtality is a big big thing, but all it takes is one new start-up ISP to say "hey folks, we offer unrestricted internet access! no two-tier internet for us!", everyone who cares flocks to them, all the other providers sit around looking a bit foolish and making less money and the whole silly idea goes away.

At least, that's what I'm hoping happens!

I will happily get down on my knees and beg you for this one, but please please please can we have scroll arrows or a scroll bar or something in the dialogue options gui? :)

Hi Snake,

Quote*I'm recording through the sound input jack - not the microphone jack.

This is the exact point in the chain where the sound is being crappened, so to speak :) As a general rule, consumer soundcards are not built with recording instruments in mind, and as Eldkatt has mentioned the cheap A/D converters (the electronics that looks at an analogue signal and converts it in to zeros and ones for the computer to understand) will be doing a bad job of preserving the original signal.

However, the biggest issue you have using the line-in is going to be mismatched impedances. A guitar pickup has a very high impedance, while the input (be it line-in or mic) on a computer soundcard is expecting a low impedance signal, and without getting in to the mind-numbing technicalities this is why you're getting a very unhappy sound. This is not a problem limited to sound cards, as the same issue arises when trying to plug a guitar directly in to even the world's most expensive mixing desk.

If you're serious or even semi-serious about recording guitars then you will need to get yourself a Direct Injection unit, or more conveniantly an external audio interface that has this as a built in feature such as this: http://www.tascam.com/products/us-122l.html

It's nice and cheap and I've used the previous model extensivly, and it should intergrate with Audition without any hassle at all.

Hope this helps!
