General Discussion / A blog of sorts
Thu 03/04/2008 19:04:02
Yeah, I registered a blog (sort of), too, and to gather attention, here's an advertising post. Geez, I hope it's not to late to jump on the bandwagon.  :=

Anyway. After the surprising reception of that supposed-to-be-an-april-fool-thing and due to onsetting madness, I decided to actually make a game like that. More information here, as well as an explanation of why in heck I registered a blog for it.

I'm still working on the formatting and layout, so please have some patience here. There's a full three posts to read right now, though, and there's more coming up (and it won't ALL be related to that game thing). Rejoice!

I'm still using 2.72 and I'm not planning to change that soon. Hell, I just barely recovered from the changes made after 2.71!  :=

And if this image doesn't fall into this category, what would?

It's rather tasteless and childish, but not offensive and/or disgusting. If he was asking us if the image from goatse.cx or something like that was suitable as an avatar that might be an appropriate reaction, but... well, he isn't.

Wait, that means in order to enter this month, I would need the ability to feel and emulate an emotion akin to... "love".

Damn.

Wow. Bumping after two years... usually, that's Cyrus' job, isn't it?

AGS Games in Production / Re: Me Go April Fool
Wed 02/04/2008 16:27:00
To quote Dave Gilbert: "This was an April Fool's gag.  Thanks for those who went along with it, and apologies to those who fell for it.  :)"

... or was it? (DUN DUN DUN!)

So then it's probably true that any games made with AGS(the latest version before the unbranded one comes out) will no longer be able to be distributed, nor will any games made with AGS and that the AGS 3 engine is basically history?

Of course, they want to make MONEY! Or at least, that's what the drunken beta tester said.

Great news. Now to figure out how to port Me Go Store to the XBox...  ::)

Read the manual and do the tutorial. It's all explained there (I think).

General Discussion / Re: TOP 10 AGS Games
Tue 01/04/2008 12:50:28
That's pretty hard to say... there are lots of good AGS games out there. But I shall try. Games which I think to be rather obscure are linked to.

10. Enoworld. Dunno why... I just liked it a lot.

9. Adventures in the Galaxy etc. etc. - Like a castrated and compressed version of X - Beyond the Frontier, with less opportunities but more plot and less boredom.

8. Vegetable Patch Extreem Turbo 2 (by Captain Mostly (PLUS art by Squinky!)) - From the distant past and silly beyond measure, but a great deal of fun nevertheless.

7. A Cure for the Common Cold (by Team Strange Potato) - It was a lot of fun to play. A little short maybe, but still.

6. Chicken VS Road - The puzzles were pretty strange at first, but once I got used to that way of thinking, it was entertaining.

5. Five Days a Stranger. I think I'm one of the few persons who like it less than 7DAS.

4. Seven Days a Skeptic. I didn't like the rest of the series that much. Trilby's Notes had me giving up at the point were you have to get the painting through under the door because the game refused cooperation with my vocabulary, and 6DAS was just... meh.

And now for the positions that are actually interesting.

3. The Art of Theft. A few gameplay issues and the deadly, deadly sin of forcing the player to have good knowledge of future events / the level in general before allowing them to truly succeed, but fun nevertheless.

2. Apprentice I. Donkey "puzzle" was too much of a pixel hunt, but the rest was fine.

1. Apprentice II. No discussion.

AGS Games in Production / Me Go April Fool
Tue 01/04/2008 10:32:56
Due to popular request, the next installation in the Me Go Store series (of which I still don't understand why they're so well-received.  :P): ME GO NEW GAME!*

"Plot": Well, you know the drill: Evilguy does something bad, and you have to fix it again... but this time, it's different. By swallowing a magical potion, he alters reality in unpredictable ways**, and suddenly random encounters are popping up everywhere just as his absence of an evil lair*** turns into a Doom Fortress!

Yeah, it's an Adventure/RPG crossover this time.

Without further ado what you're all yearning for: Screenshots!

From the starting cutscene. Yes, that's shading.

The combat system in action.

One of the many "puzzles".

Finishing date: No goddamn idea. Depends on the AGS forum users' pressure.

* Working title. Perhaps.
** "Unpredictable" because magical potions normally don't effect the whole reality.
*** As seen in Me Go 2008.

Alright, and with that, we close the voting. Congratulations, TheJBurger, and thanks to cat and RyanTimothy for participating! Start a new Background (or Mockup) Blitz as soon as you like. I'll try and knock up a few trophies later on, when my PC starts behaving more predictable again.
#734
And while you're at it, ask them to bring back the Coding Competition, too.  ;)
#735
Well... technically, there is a TCP/IP plugin with which that would be possible, but it's hopelessly outdated and never really worked anyway. So, you might want to use something other than AGS for a project like that. ;)
#736
As promised, my votes.

Idea - cat. A clichéd villain lair beyond measure, but in a good way. I'm sorry for the other entries, which were also good in this respect, but TheJBurger's was a bit too original (now that's something you don't read too often!) and Ryan Timothy's was just... I don't know, not villain-lair-esque enough. Can't put it into words any better, sorry... it's just giving off the best "vibe" of sorts in that respect.

Atmosphere - TheJBurger. No discussion.

Design - TheJBurger. It's huge, it has a world map on the wall and a projection of a globe on the table... not much more explanation needed here.

Composition - Close call, but I guess I'll go with Ryan Timothy here. Everything just sort of... fits.

Functionality - Ryan Timothy. Calls for rather big character sprites at a high resolution, but overall, I think this is the most functional entry.

Technique - Close call again, but this time TheJBurger makes it. It looks a little blurry at parts, but I guess we can just chalk that up to "style". ;)

Not a real music suggestion, but there's a pretty awesome internet radio station called PureMetal.org, with the subtext of being "Hard 'n' Heavy", and they play rather awesome music. The website and moderation is in German, but the songs itself are international.

So do I. I monkeyed (past tense of "to monkey", not monk-eyed) around with her and my original draft for a while, and this is what I came up with:

The biggest issue I can see with this is that people won't be able to play guess-the-gender with the characters anymore, but apart from that, I think she's LIGHT YEARS further up on the quality scale than the original sprite (not that hard, but still). I mainly stuck with the original shading (or lack) thereof, though.  I didn't like the varying line width around the boobs, but after removing them,

she started to look a bit TOO slutty (or, ahem, "surgically enhanced") to me, even for a femme fatale. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, everybody... although this is kind of defeating my original intentions of having graphics that are mainly "easy to draw".  :P :=

Anyway... any further suggestions? I'd gladly take them.
#739
That's rather easy. All you will need are the Object.Animate and Character.Animate functions. It's all explained there. Good luck!

Just looked it up in the manual and yes, you can use

Code: ags

set-globalint 1 1

too. Nice. Learned something today.
