Thanks for all the warmth, guys. It's good to see that much hasn't changed :)

Our fee is 10% of your income for life... :)

If I continue into academia, that might not be a whole lot!

I just realised you're the author of "Labyrinth", Akumayo - played that game a week ago,
just to take a screenshot for the database and couldn't stop playing - addictive!

I had forgotten about Labyrinth! I've actually worked on games like that a couple of times over the years, though never to completion. I like randomized dungeon crawls. I still think about games I'd like to make sometimes, but I usually lack the time and resources to do what I'd like to do.

Hi all,

I haven't been around these parts for several years now, but I imagine some people might remember my name. I wanted to come back, for a moment, and extend my thanks to both those that knew me when I was active here and to the community at large.

I found AGS when I was thirteen years old. My early experience with it produced some truly terrible games, but my time with it was formative. I remember writing my first dialogue script - that was my first time doing anything remotely like programming. I remember being so excited by the script, and it didn't stop there. I think the most complicated thing I wrote was a platform shooter engine, which I tried to make into a game ("War") before running out of time because of schoolwork. I was in Junior High, then.

This community supported me throughout those years. You provided a safe place for me to make terrible games, and offered meaningful, constructive criticisms of both those games and the code itself. I read through some of my posts before writing this and it was quite moving. I was too young to respond with maturity, especially in the early days, but that didn't stop your kindness either. This is truly an inspiring community of people.

I've just received my Bachelor's in Computer Science (double major with Mathematics), and I'll be attending program of Ph.D. study for Computer Science starting this fall. I wholeheartedly believe that I would not be here if weren't for AGS and this community. You nurtured an interest I didn't know I had when I first wanted to bring stories to life through games. You helped me let my imagination run free, and it brought me to CS as my field of study and my passion.

So to all of you that knew me then, and all of you that keep this community alive today, thank you. It is an honor to have been a part of this.

Ahh yes... I started work this summer... no time for AGS but... I did get paid several times... $350 is my biggest two-week draw thus far...

Hello all, btw...

I have returned from the abyss, bringing with me my latest perversion of the AGS engine's original purpose.

Well of Shadow

Well of Shadow is a dungeon RPG type.Ã,  The engine is completely finished, and runs so far flawlessly.Ã,  There are, however, no graphics, not even placeholders.Ã,  Everything is text/menu based at the moment (making for a not very interesting game, needless to say).Ã,  Other than that, it is practically finished.

Concept:
Many warriors, seeking power beyond that of a mortal kind, have ventured into the Well of Shadow - none have returned.Ã,  No one who enters the well ever emerges to tell the tale of the wickedness and misery below.Ã,  Many rumors, and even some ancient documents, speak of the well.
It is a resting place for the souls of the damned and the depraved.Ã,  People who's lives were led by corruption, fear, anger, misery, depression, and hatred, find a new life in the depths of the abyssal Well of Shadow.Ã,  In their reborn state, they can release the horrors of their mortal lives on the adventurers who dare enter their realm.Ã,  Mortal pain is their sole pleasure, murder the pentacle of happiness.Ã,  They are the Monsters of Shadow.
What lies in the well is another realm entirely.Ã,  A world apart.Ã,  What drives mortal courage to brave this abyss?Ã,  Power.Ã,  For at the bottom of the well, it is said, in the deepest dungeon, there lies the Throne of Shadow.Ã,  He who sits on it is given power over the shadows of the mortal realm.Ã,  Power over all human darkness:Ã,  corruption, fear, anger, misery, depression, hatred, and death.Ã,  He who holds this power can inflict or take away as much darkness on the human race as he pleases.Ã,  It is his power.
You have entered the well.Ã,  You quest for the ultimate power, to sit upon the Throne of Shadow and command the forces of darkness to your biding, be it for the rise or fall of your fellow man.Ã,  Just remember one thing, warrior - no one comes out of the Well of Shadow.

As I said, there are no graphics as of yet.Ã,  I can probably work out the music on my own, but graphics I am a master of failure at.Ã,  The style I am imagining is a rather bleak one, full of, predictably, shadows.Ã,  Backgrounds, monsters, and weapons must take on a semi-realistic, and even surreal appearance.Ã,  I am looking for someone/people to create backgrounds, monsters, perhaps weapons, and perhaps the menu sprites (though I can probably pull of the latter two).Ã,  For more detail, please contact me by PM, I would highly appreciate and give credit to any help on this project.

Egh, I'd love to get this updated, I really would, but don't expect anything anytime soon.  School and social life consume my waking hours.
This summer, perhaps, you can hope to begin hearing from me again.  Maybe I'll get this updated, work on a new game (still non-adventure, woo!), and re-join the community.  For now though, Akumayo is dormant as The Mighty Angerlfish.
Some day, friends, I -will- return.

Captain Akumayo of the rattletrap "The Mighty Anglerfish" reporting to Skyrates!

Pretty fun game so far, interesting, orgininal concept as well.  Kudos Edmundo and team.  This will definately make for a more interesting spanish class.  The combat is neat too, thought it takes a bit longer than regular play.

I agree.  Religion and science are separate entities, never specifically meant to oppose or rival one another.  Religion seems to me, at times, to be like an escapist fantasy novel.  Whenever life gets just a little too rough, or the books that provide a detailed account of war and death get a little too much for you, you turn to an escapist novel, you turn to religion.
For some reason that reminded me of a quote in Blood Diamond:
"Sometimes I look around this place [Sierra Leone] and I wonder how God can just look down here and not stop what's going on.  And then I realize, God abondoned this place a long time ago."

My random thoughts, anyhow.

Kudos, really.  I'm wordless.  Awesomely said man.

BACK to the original discussion.  I just noticed this topic, and I must say, that I don't really CARE what the afterlife has for me.  When I do, boo hoo, I'm gone, what's next?  Well, if it's something, go me, if not, I'm not going to care much since I don't exist, will I?

Wow, lots of new points brought up.  I feel cut down.

Nacho:

I hadn't really looked at it in that light.  Perhaps, no, for sure, I should've looked it over more before commiting myself to it [Socialism].  I suppose I'm too easily infatuated.  Looking it back over, you're right, it could not work for long, and while it was in power, it would not do very well.  Socialism seems ideal for a very small community, not a nation.  You've cut me down from my "empowered" state, thanks for being a voice of reason.

Nacho:

I think I'm starting to really appreciate Helm's earlier statement.  Political stances are largely like "party tricks".  The far left, and far right too, for that matter, are publicity stunts, it would seem.  Something to balance out a problem within the individual.  Politics looks like a game more than anything else.  Who can get a monopoly first?  How long can they keep it?

I'm very glad I posted this here.  I know most of the people here are intelligent, and have insight into many issues, and you've proven yourselves many times over.  Thank you.
Again, maybe I'm too easily infatuated with new opinions, but this really seems to make sense to me, what's forming in my mind.  Similar to what Helm said, really.  Influence does not come through politics, not really.  It won't change all that much, because it's fueled by other things, circumstances, coincidental occurances, that's what opens the door for change.  Revolution is a game, people are the pawns, even the one's in power.  Thanks again guys, particularly Helm and Nacho; you've helped me sort my thoughts on the issue.

But the 1% who aren't like you, they change the world.  They cause Revolution, Genocide, War, and other Capitalised words.

Quote from: BeckyCapitalism has triumphed!Ã,  I'm not saying it's a good thing, but it's better than anything else.

I strongly disagree.Ã,  As Helm brought up, Capitalism is a war-based system.Ã,  Production for profit only works when there is profit to be had, when there is demand, when there is war.Ã,  Capitalism promotes destruction over peace, oppresion over freedom.

QuoteI'm not saying it's a good thing, but it's better than anything else.

It's not better of what we have to think up for the future. Unless you think massive economical inequality which breeds extreme suffering, loss of life and war, is the best we can do, ever.

Excellently put.

I'm happy with the system we have here in the states. Sure, it's in the gutter right now, and it needs some serious repairs and revisions, but it's pretty cool, I guess.

Ahh, but it could be better, don't you think?Ã,  True democracy cannot exist without Socialism, our [United States] system is not a democracy at all, as it claims.Ã,  It is a republic.Ã,  Those serious repairs and revisions could come about much more swiftly under Socialism, I believe.

Quote from: Layabout on Sat 04/11/2006 14:56:57
The only way socialism will work is if all people are implemented with brain controlling devices, thus destroying any chance of free thought. people are greedy. full stop x 10

I highly disagree.Ã,  Socialism would work because people WEREN'T brain controlled.Ã,  It would allow a true democracy by the people.Ã,  People are greedy?Ã,  Yes, some people are, by nature.Ã,  Does that mean we should rely on a system that promotes that greed, and plants it in people who might've otherwise been humble?Ã,  I think not.

Quote from: BeckyAs long as people are individuals, you cannot say that a socialist complete redistribution of wealth is possible, and that everyone will be better off under a socialist banner.

As long as people are individuals, you cannot say that any form of government or society will make everyone better off under its banner.Ã,  I'm not saying that Socialism is a door to utopia, rather, I think it is just a noch better than the capitalist system.

Damn, one over the superficial limit...  I guess I'll have to find a workaround too...

Normally I can resolve these myself, but this one is making me angry...

QuoteScript Link Failed:  Runtime error:  unresolved import 'SKMG::PlayGame^10'

And here's the coding I think is relevant:

Code: ags

static int SKMG::PlayGame(int xbar_left, int xbar_right, int ybar_up, int ybar_down, int NumberOfRows, int Speed, int Varience, int Max, int StopAt, Directions SlideDirection) {
...
}

Code: ags

struct SKMG {
  import static int PlayGame(int xbar_left, int xbar_right, int ybar_up, int ybar_down, int NumberOfRows, int Speed, int Varience, int Max, int StopAt, Directions SlideDirection);
...
};

Any ideas?

Communism != Socialism

Helm:
Yes, yes it does.  However, capitalism also opens the doors for over powerful corrupt corporations, organizations, and individuals.  Look at WalMart!  It's sickening!

Socialism has never been given a proper chance.  You can't count the USSR or Soviet Russia, they were/are too influenced by communism.  Holland and Canada are good examples though.

I envision a Socialistic society that is Socialistic almost solely because it has overthrown capitalism, which I strogly disagree with.
