General Discussion / Re: About Sprite Jam...
Mon 17/04/2006 23:16:46
Good point.

In my opinion, the Hall of Fame is doing a great job of showing who has won each comp.  The trophies are different, if you see a trophy in someone's signature, you're not going to know where they won it, or what for, you're going to say, "Why does Stefano have a golden dolphin in his sig?"

The trophies are more of a complimentary prize given by the host, saying, "Hey, nice sprite, enter again!".  The host shouldn't have to make them, or anything of that sort, because the HoF is doing a fine job of showing the winners.  Keep the trophies I say, because they aren't hurting too much, if at all, and they ARE attracting more competition, more variety, and giving out more experience.  They may just be a fad too, that will die out over time, but they're fun right now, so leave 'em alone!

Well, I thought I'd try, I realize that this might have fit a little better at the last contest, but, what the heck?

I present, a Crrlee citizen.  Yes, a Crrlee, this is what the aliens from Space Battles! look like in my head.  This particular Crrlee spends its time focusing its mental powers, like levitation.  It uses Meta-Physical limbs to control objects.

(Inconceivable meta-physical limbs not portrayed)

Go ahead and rip my entry to shreds...lol

The 45 days... aren't up yet.  Ironically enough though, once I counted out the days on the calendar the day after I.. err... understood, the message, and the date of the change is supposed to be April 20.  As it turns out, this is Hitler's birthday  :-\

I don't think that song would play in my head, on the exact night 45 days from Hitler's birthday, just becuase I had seen when his birthday was, and decided that it would be a good day for my life to change.  Then again, it may have nothing to do with it at all.  I certainly don't FEEL like it means anything, so it probably doesn't.

About us being gods, do you mean you and I, or everyone?   :P

(I haven't ever been stoned...)

-grumble-

I'm just accused!!!  I can't really have it, because I'm not paranoid, I just exhibit SOME side-effects of it, and my friends find that to be grounds to say that I actually HAVE it.

They're wrong... they have to be!!!  :=

As an afterthought, I should probably add that several of my friends accuse me of having Paranoia Schizophrenia.  I disagree.

Tim, if you are needing help with a game, this is not the right place to post.  You should post your requests for help in THIS thread:

I had some spare time.  I hope you all can make good use of it.

I have a test level (where I run new ships before adding them) that uses a randomized layout.  I may (when I'm finished with the main game) make a mini-game, where you play on infinitely repeating randomized levels, trying to get a high score or something like that.  A good thought.

BTW:  I got key-based spawnpoint working.  It will be implemented in the next update.
#311
That is so cool!  My favorite class D ship is the Blood Hawk, and my favorite class C ship is the Dragonfly!  I considered that perhaps these two ships are more powerful than the others, but when I had some of my friends from school play it, one liked Lightning/White Lightning, and the two others liked The Destroyer/Tadpole/The Taranchula.  I suppose it's just personal preference.  I like the idea of forcing one ship or another on the player... I may implement it... sometime... maybe as a mini-game of sorts....
I've also thought it would be cool to make it so that bonus ships/levels can be unlocked by completing every level in a system with every ship.  THAT would be very hard, especially in the later levels.

Anyway, I'll look into controlling spawnpoint with the keyboard.  Maybe it'll be ready by the next update (even if it IS still jumpy).

Thank you for taking time to play and comment, I appreciate it greatly.
#312
I hadn't thought about that being a problemÃ,  :-[

I, personally, enjoy using the mouse to control the spawn point, but it IS extreemly jumpy.Ã,  How about if I re-work it so that you can control the spawn point cursor with both the arrow keys AND the mouse?Ã,  Would that solve the problem well, do you think?Ã,  (BTW: do you prefer 'F' or SpaceBar to fire?)

Thank you very much for the comments!Ã,  I hope you are able to complete it.

EDIT:  Oh, I see you did complete it.  No complaints about the levels/ships then?

I have experiences that cannot be properly explained all the time.  Some of them really scare me, and some don't.  In fact, some are very comforting, lulling me into a state of conscience where I don't feel real anymore...

My explanation?  Meta-Physics.  Our five senses are just the ones we experience most often, we have more, and those five can get stronger.  The best way I've found to distinguish the 'real' paranormal experiences from the 'fake' ones, is to think about what was going through my head right before the experience.  Like, if I hear a voice in my head, but just a few seconds before that, I was THINKING about ghosts or something, then I dismiss the voice as my imagination.  However, if I'm on the computer doing something, adn I'm very concentrated, and I hear a voice, I listen to it, because I know I've begun to pick up a meta-physical sound.  Usually whatever is said is too quiet to hear, or sounds like an ordinary conversation that I'm not a part of... almost like I'm an eavesdropper.
Sometimes I'll have a song playing in my head, and certain words will seperate themselves and paste in my mind.  If I haven't been thinking about this happening, then the message usually continues to pull out.  I once got:
"(In) 45 days, (your) life will change"
*Words in parenthases are words that became part of the message, but weren't in the song.
I've also gotten some incoherant messages, but those happen after I'm thinking about the occurances.
I once got a message out of my ears ringing.  I was lying down, (freshly, mind you, not tired yet) and my ears began to ring.  My arm was over my ear, so I moved it, and the ringing stopped.  That made me feel empty, so I put my arm back on top of my ear, and the ringing continued.  In my mind's eye, the sound became this cosmic dust looking white thing that ran through my head, and words would peel off of it, and paste themselves.  The final message:
"(undisclosed name) thinks of you always"
*The undisclosed name was a person a once knew, and seem to dream about a lot now that they're gone.  I'm not releasing their name, because it might make the dreams end, and I'd rather that not happen, because I enjoy the person's company in them.  (The person isn't dead, btw)

Anyhow, that concludes a breif glimpse into SOME of my experiences.  Meta-Physics is the best answer still I think.

Here it is!  The update!

Four new levels, four new ships, a whole new game.  The menus look better, the new levels are bigger, the new ships are faster and stronger, the only thing missing?

You.

Take the controls pilot, arrow keys to move, SpaceBar or 'F' to fire, and the mouse to choose your spawnpoint.  Sounds simple, but it really isn't.  I would be honored if you took the time to complete all eight levels.

Good luck pilot.

Not another update just yet, just thought I'd drop a line to tell anyone watching this that I've completed the next four unlockable ships, and will now begin on the new system (The Trean System).  The new ships in the next update will be (once unlocked by completing the Mirk System):

The Tadpole:
  -Speed **
  -Bullets ***
The Dragonfly:
  -Speed ***
  -Bullets **
White Lightning:
  -Speed ****
  -Bullets *
The Taranchula:
  -Speed *
  -Bullets: ****

I'll post again when the update is complete.

Instead of standing by and letting myself win, I will be morally correct, and vote.

My vote goes to SteveMcCrea, because of the smoothness of the keyboard control, and the pretty well commented code.Ã,  It was much easier to decipher for me than KhrisMUC's.Ã,  The single pixel thing didn't bother me too bad, but Steve's was easier to work with, and I think it would be easier to implement in a game, so there's my vote...Ã,  this better not end in a tie....

Update.  Version Beta .02 now available.  Most notable feature is that the layout is now set, and has four playable levels in the Mirk System, each with its own unique objectives and playtype.  Shootemup, retreival, time trial, etc.  Let's see how good a pilot you really are...
#319
I am also entering this one.Ã,  My module is under heavy construction, I just hope I can make the deadline...  (It will NOT be made with the beta)

Ahh, thank you.  That was the problem.
