Quotewhat is a "yodel"??Ã,

It was developed by the villagers living in distant valleys of the alps to communicate from a valley to another using the natural echo of the mountainsides.

It is also useful to scare away any wolves and bears near the village :-)

AtZeuS : looks just fine - hope to see more soon

(btw. WAS there ever in history of electronic entertainment a Gui offering "yodel at" as command ?!?!)

Critics' Lounge / Re: How do I ink?

I am inking with Pilot too, but only for drafts, after scanning -300 dpi- (since I color most things on the computer anyway) I just adjust the line with / make correction via eraser.
Here's what I get then (more or less)

in the lower right part the small picture is the actual game size...

QuoteI see what appears to be Windows 98, and a wallpaper saying 'Linux rocks'.
Baffled, I am.

Yeah it reminds me of that scene in "Full Metal Jacket" by Stanley Kubrick:

"You write 'Born To Kill' on your helmet AND wear a peace symbol button on your jacket? Is that supposed to be some kind of a sick joke?"

"Sir, no, Sir!! I was trying to say something about the duality of men, Sir! The Jungian thing, Sir!"

<uncomfortable silence from the superior officer>

"You better pull your self together, son, and help along until the final vicotry. AND you should remove the damn peace button!" :)

Oh and here is my desktop. DESKTOP

As far as I figured it out, if I make a GUI button and put a Text in I can "only" chose the font and the color. The text seems to be centered horizontaly on default.

Can this be changed to center verticaly as well. As I have quite a lot of button controls, it would save a bunch of sprites and memory. Even better would be a full positioning possibility...

(now I can use the text only on long, thin buttons, all others I have to import as sprites, although they are all same shape with different Text on them)

Is this a too big feature to ask for? :)

I second everything Calamity said hereÃ,  ;)

plus

would like to ask if that is the actual screen size of the characters, or better: which resolution do you use? Those graphics look superb, but would com out very small when played in window mode... ???

Heh... I suck at this game:
Spoiler
I'm in the locked room and I know I have to lock the bolt but it is rusted, I would just try everything but I Inadvertantley save with about ten seconds to go, and I can't be bothered continuially reloading to try one more action again and agian.

Tis Quite hard, but maybe I just suck.

Look around. You'll know when you have the right answer.

If Steve's answer is still too cryptical:

Spoiler
on the left side of the screen, on the cabinet with drawers there is a white object, which is a flask of baby oil. So when you are trapped in the locked room, just walk quickly to left get the flask, use it on the bolt and then push the bolt shut

OK I just finished the game

Spoiler
(after being a real idiot and overseeing the hint of the "6 (six) digit code and entering the safe combination as auggested by the diary: 06161944...)

So being stuck there is not to blame on the game but on me!

After Snarky's in depth review pretty much gets it all, I will try to keep mine short. (It's just my humble opinion, which I want to share with you - don't take me too seriously!)

++
+ Sound! Good atmospheric tracks with very fitting effects. Fit well the length of the game.
+ Overlay art. I am a fan of horror comics. The style used fits the mood so good!

+
+ Backgrounds. A bit too blurry but still very nice. If the details would have been easier to make out, I would have moved the backgrounds to the ++ category.
+ Puzzles. They are well thought through and balanced. Mostly (as the game as whole) they remind me of Resident Evil. I love puzzles that move way above "use-all-on-all-and-hope"!
+ A lot of "unnecessary" objects, false hints etc. It makes the game feel more "real"

-
- The story and the characters are a bit too thin, even for a short game. Some plot gaps were already pointed out. Many questions for those topics are coming to my mind, but I suppose, i will have to accept the game "as is"... I didn't really like the ending too.
Spoiler
The described ritual destruction of Amber's body sounds a bit like unnecessary violence. If it would be possible to replay the game and try and succeed in saving Amber this would be a good "50:50" alternate ending. So it is just unsatisfying - at least for me

- Snarky and others already spoke about some other weak sides of the design. Let me just come back to one - the buttons of the god-puzzle. Since I had the volume down (thus didn't hear the clicks, just like the others) I expected the buttons to move or come out or anything visual to happen to give me feedback. For the first five tries on this puzzle, I thought it wasn't activated yet!

All in all I give this game 70% of what I expected, considering all circumstances.

This is actully quite good!

Fivetrickpony , I hope you keep up the game-designing and to hear/see/play from you soon again.

Instead of a "thank you" I offer you to translate this game into german for you. If you are interested PM me and I will give you my E-Mail, so you can send me the translation file...

Here is the (short version) of the exact message

Code: ags
 AppName: swq1.exe AppVer: 2.61.747.0 ModName: swq1.exe
ModVer: 2.61.747.0 Offset: 000abd66

(where "swq1" is my game in development)

QuoteAnyway, I think these sort of bugs is better to be discussed on the Technical forum.

Yep, I am just as humble to keep my questions with the "beginners" stuff, since this is like 22nd day I got AGS...

Whoever knows how, may move this thread...

Hints & Tips / Re: stuck on stranger
Mon 06/09/2004 17:53:17
hmm.. sorry to hijack this thread, but I don't think my question is worth a new one.

I am stuck at the safe... I have the diary and I am pretty sure the combination is in there. As far as I noticed, there is only one important, fixed day mentioned there, but no matter how I calculate it, the damn safe stays shut!

Another question, rather off-topic - how od you post the "Spoilers bellow" field?!?!

Thanks

EDIT (I am such a dumbo)

Spoiler
I kept typing 06161944 (and variations, but always kept the 19..) - "he who can count is the one to rule world"

Thanks for the answers.

I spent quite some timeÃ,  on this in the last days. Without getting close to a solution.

QuoteYeah, it's a known issue and unfortunately hasn't been yet resolved because CJ can't replicate it.

I can't replicate it on pupose too. It seems to come and go randomly. I tried it with newer and older AGS-Games with all kinds of set-ups. Would it help to post the windows message as well (the "helpful" "notify microsoft about this error" one)?

QuoteTry running the game directly from the Compiled folder

Didn't helpÃ,  :(

Abadonware is the best free marketing you can get as a developer.

I am suspecting that some software companies are already more than just tolerating this.

Imagine you get Parts 1-3 of a game from a "grey" site. You'll play them for sure and are more likely to get the (theoretically possible) 4th part from the store... It costs the company nothing (as they aren't selling it anymore), comparing the costs of marketing, producing and suplying some demos or anything.

I also assume this has been done also during the nineties, with easy-to-crack floppy games. Bugged or shortened versions were made available, to get people motivated to buy the real thing. Mainly by very small (thus poor) publishers, who could not include a T-shirt, a poster and a comic in the game package (oh, those were the times...)

Just an exceprt on my: "Software pirate, your marketing manager" theory. I have no proof of whatever kind.

Congrats, nice game!

I did enjoy it.

I recommend it.

I was playing around, trying to somehow locate the reason for this for weeks now, but no clue:

about every 5 - 6 times when I run a test game in the editor it would give me an error message. I mean it does not close properly but I get the ugly window bellow...

I get this one when using the demo game, my own game, anything else in between, no metter what method I use to quit the game (default quit, my own GUI, red-cross, task manager)

I am running on a 3.06 P4 wiht 512MB and WinXP, for chipset specs see bellow:

Integrated Graphic Processor: M661FX/M661MXÃ,  Ã,
AGP: SiS Acceleration Graphic PortÃ,  Ã,
IDE: SiS IDE ControllerÃ,  Ã,
USB:USB 1.1 x 2Ã,
USB: USB 2.0Ã,
Audio: SiS7012 Audio ControllerÃ,  Ã,
LAN: SiS900 Fast Ethernet ControllerÃ,  Ã,

It's not much of a problem but I just can't stand things not working properly (esp. if I can't figure out why!)

Anyone a clue?!?!

QuotePratchett fans know what I'm talking about.

YES WE DO. GOOD WORK.
#95
Why not move it at the lowest speed, with triplet frames (Thus you show Frame1-Frame1-Frame1-Frame2-Frame2-Frame2 etc.)?
#96
Is that really necessary?

I mean you can assign a different view to the same character and let him speak/behave differently in different scenes. Just like an actor playing two characters in a movie.

Would you still need more? Or wouldn't that work? (I'm new to this, don't hit me now)

I played a bit, mostly with perspective...

* added more nuclear goo to the pipe (uh, uh, yeah, nuke-waste, uhuh)
* tried to fix perspective inside toolbox (not too sure if ok)
* same with white note on the left
* removed some double-pixels

* changed curved wall to two straight panels and one slight curve.
* straightened back corridor and door (I think it looks better this way - you choose)
* applied (more or less) same perspective to the poster as to the panel behind
* removed some double-pixels
* fixed bottom of the front door (bent sliding doors would be way too hard to animate...)

Title suggestions (thinking of a humorous Space-Opera):

"2069: Spaced Out And Away"
"Stars Ahoi!"
"Spacepirates - Free But Lost"
"Outlaws Of Orion"

The "Lost Souls Island Puzzle" in Steve Meretzky's "Spellcasting 201: The Sorcerer's Appliance" ! from 1991 - this one I will tell my grandkids about - for sure!

Worst puzzle ever:

the "Piano Puzzle" in Cocktail's "Fascination"

(Any of the yournger folks happen to know these?)
