Advanced Technical Forum / Testing Problems

Okay, I finally got my character views done. The background is done. The character is in a walkable area. All my walkable areas are done. Everything seems fine. When I try to test my game, it opens up, crashes, and sometimes displays this message:
------------------------------
Illegal exception

An exception 0xC0000005 occured in
ACWIN.EXE at EIP = 0xBFF77142
(strcpy/strcat); program pointer is -7, ACI
version 2.55.560, gtags (0,0)

AGS cannot continue, this exception was
fatal. Please note down the numbers
above, remember what you were doing at
the time and notify CJ on the Tech forum.

Most version of Windows allow you to
press Ctrl+C now to copy this entire
message to the clipboard for easy reporting.

[OK]
------------------------------
Other times it just crashes, then a message pops up saying that the AGS engine couldn't run and that a message should have popped up telling me why. The message that should have showed up did not.

I am using the latest version of AGS. The only other thing I had open was the AGS tutorial. I'm using Windows 98 on a Pentium 3. When I use AGS on Windows XP on a Pentium 4 it works fine (or last time I checked, it's been a while since I've had easy access to that computer).

Sorry, but there's still a problem...I'm almost positive it's something I might be doing. I get this message when I try to open it:

numbers above, remember what you were doing at the time and notify

Hmm...I've no idea what that is.

I guess I'm the only one with the problem...

I downloaded your game. I unzipped it into it's own little file. I tried to open Apprentice.exe...but then the screen turns all black and then a bit of white lines and the game doesn't open. My computer just runs on like nothing happened...as if it were innoccent...or maybe it's just me. Usually if I get this problem, it gets fixed by unzipping everything into the same directory as ags.exe...but this time it does not work...help?

Just thought I'd let you know of any problems that anyone else might have...

I will try to be complete in my problem.

I made my first game and it worked nicely. I began to make another one today, except on another computer and this time I actually extracted the files from the .zip folder instead of just dragging and dropping them out into a folder. So, I think I'm doing everything right when I'm making the game...with a few additions that I didn't try last time. This time I decided to import a character (Mika from RON site). I made sure I had used MIKA and not EGO. I checked to make sure Mika was the only one being put into a room. I made sure she was on a walkable area. I hope you can see why I think things should had come out okay--I was being careful. Alas, I got this error:

An internal error has occured. Please note down the following information.
If the problem persists, contact Chris Jones
(ACI version 2.54.522)

Error: Load_room: Unable to load the room file 'intro.crm'
Make sure that you saved the room to the correct folder (it should be in your game's sub-folder of the AGS directory).
Also check that the player character's starting room is set correctly.

Does AGS think I want a room called intro.crm? Am I supposed to have a room called intro.crm? Last time I made a game there were just two rooms: room1.crm and room2.crm. That worked fine. This time it looks as if I might have goofed somehow. Might it be because I used an imported character? Thanks in advance.

I should first introduce myself like it says I should under one of the read me topics. I am fifteen years old, I like good puzzles, I like to draw, and I like to run. The only adventure point and click games I have played are Broken Sword and Lure of the Temptress...and then there's Myst, Riven, and Exile. I got interested in making my own game when I wanted to play another adventure game (two days ago).

Now, I think it'd help if I explained what I'm trying to do for my first test game. It's another 'escape from the room' game. I'm trying to make it pretty simple. I have a mop, and a black bucket of paint. I want the character to pick up the mop, dump it into the paint, thus making it a mop with paint on it. Then I want them to paint a section of the wall and make a hole to escape, as through a door.

I have already accomplished making all the graphics. I have made it possible for the mop to be added to the inventory, then dumped into the bucket, then changed to a mop with paint on it. I found out two problems through all that. First, the character doesn't walk to the object...I know I'm supposed to tell the character to walk, but I can't find it...except under areas for the 'walk to' point. Second, I placed my character on a walking area, but when I tested the game the character is in the place I wanted it to be but there is another image of my character behind the false wall (see later problem).

Now I just have a question. How can I make it so the painted mop is used on a wall, that part of the wall dissapears, and a new wall with a hole appears? Should I use the object removed from room and visibility choices? Is there another way? I think I may be going about the problem wrong. This wall is accidentally transparent (can I remove having transparancy on a sprite?) and there is an image of my character behind him where the new hole-painted wall should be invisible.
