Now I feel bad, because I did find Tree of Life incredibly boring and pretentious.

I'm going to go with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, because it was an absurd production disaster, a huge flop, and remains one of Gilliam's less well-loved films. They weren't allowed to tell anyone that Robin Williams was in it, and I seem to remember hearing that the producer at one point held a reel of exposed film hostage with a gun.

I think it's wonderful, and works incredibly well considering a significant portion of the script was never shot. Also, having watched it endlessly taped off the TV, it's nice to see how great it looks scanned in high definition.

I think that's just a matter of accent. Brits tend to make esses into zeds. I notice that some British Muslims pronounce esses as esses - especially in 'Islam' and 'Muslim', but it's not against any rule.

I used to be a huge apostrophe pedant, until I found out the rules were inconsistent, made up fairly recently, and just an excuse to look down on people for not knowing something. But, side note, if something belongs to more than one pizza, the apostrophe goes at the end. E.g. I saw the pizzas' many toppings.

Now do the Monty Hall Problem!

I think the humour / language is a lot like The Young Ones, inasmuch as grown ups will not be happy with kids hearing it. But kids would actually love it, and it wouldn't do them much harm, because it's essentially quite warm-hearted and silly.

Freesound.org is a good resource, I've used it for crowd sounds, and they seem to have a good range.

Adventuregamers tried this: https://adventuregamers.com/articles/view/28256 but it's not around any more. There also used to be an Adventure Shop, which is gone too. It's lovely to think of ways to support the adventure dev community, but I can't see what a niche site like this would offer that itch.io doesn't.

There are many great colour Hitchcock films, but I think the black and white American films are his best looking. The Technicolor films do looks glorious, but they're so glamorous and highly saturated. I think there's a bit in the Truffaut interviews where Hitchcock says something like, "we haven't worked out how to shoot in colour yet," and he's right. Everyone is still backlit, even though there's rarely a good reason to do that in colour photography.

Sorry, I haven't used 3.5 at all yet. Maybe try Rellax, which seems more up to date?

I don't know which one I like best. Maybe Shadow of a Doubt?

I've also been improving a couple of them lately. Here's The Birds without the birds:

And North By Northwest without the crop duster is here: https://twitter.com/MisterABK/status/1262688181478137856

Are you word-playing on the meaning of "taken"? [I haven't used the word "taken"?]

I meant, in answering yes to questions including the word 'taken'. But, that's good to know.

Is the pill an abortion pill?

I'm REALLY hoping it's not that, otherwise we gotta a controversy ova here.

Were both pills taken at the same time?
Could the same crime have been committed with only 1 pill?
#195
Were both pills taken?
Did the murderer take a pill?
Were the pills designed to ameliorate the effects of something else (e.g. anaphylaxis)?
#196
My second question: did the murderer and the victim each take a pill?
#197
Are both pills the same?

You had me at 16-direction walkcycle. Looks great!

I think we've been a bit confused about what you were asking - it's hard to tell what you're trying to achieve from the description. If it's something like Matt's thread, then you have a few options:

Lining up a second character / object in front of your character to act as their arms on the table, as Matt described. I would favour drawing your character with holes cut out and placing them in front of the table, but either could work. Of course, scaling does make it more complicated.

The walkbehind allows you to draw over an area of the background and set a baseline. Sprites will appear either in front of or behind that area depending on their Y position in relation to the baseline. That area can be whatever shape you draw.

Objects, like characters are sprites with their own baseline (the bottom of the sprite, by default). You can't draw walkbehinds on sprites. So as long as the baseline of the desk object or desk walkbehind is below the character sprite, we shouldn't see their legs.when they're behind it.

If you want a sprite that is partly in front of and partly behind the same object, or walkbehind - that's more of a challenge. There are a few solutions, discussed recently in this thread: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=57953.0
